This month we are happy to welcome back one of our long time
friends, Ed Vukich, who will be speaking to us about the various
types of cichlids he has bred successfully. Ed is an experienced
hobbyist and I am certain you will enjoy his presentation. Thanks
to great efforts on the part of our vice-president, Jon Schweikert,
we will be having a special presentation from a photographer and
a hobbyist at our February meeting. He will go over how to take
good pictures of your fish and aquariums. This is a subject that
has come up many times, especially when taking pictures for the
Paradise Press or to use in our annual calendar. So, please
bring your cameras and your questions and take advantage of
this special offering. In March, we welcome Frank Greco of
Frank’s Aquarium, to LIAS. Frank is the curator at the New York
Aquarium and many of our members know Frank from his participation
in the AFISH conventions. He will be giving a presentation
on the “Fishes of Taiwan.”
The bowl show resumes this month and I would like to see an
increase in the number of participants. Why not consider entering
a fish that you put in the bowl show into the club’s auction? Fish
that are entered into the bowl show should be fish that you raised
or bred. That said, why not use this same fish and make some
money from our auction? We will be providing specific containers
for all bowl show entries and our bowl show chairman, Mitch
Markowski, will be in charge of caring for the bowls. Keep in mind
that points are received for participation in the bowl show. This is
one of the many facets of contributing to the hobby that are tallied
for consideration when selecting the Hobbyist of the Year
award.
Lastly, we will be discussing some new ideas for LIAS in 2012
and hopefully we’ll make some decisions that will help increase
participation and attendance as we continue to move forward in
the year ahead. The winter weather has been mild to date; however,
we still have at least eight weeks of winter remaining. In the
event of inclement weather; please check the club’s website @
www.liasonline.org to see if the meeting has been cancelled. Remember
that if SUNY Stony Brook is closed, there will be no
meeting for LIAS since we use their space to meet!
