It’s hard to believe that we are having the first meeting of 2012
and that we have said good-bye to 2011. I would like to just take
a moment to wish everyone a very happy, healthy and joyous
new year and that 2012 is filled with many wonderful blessings
for all of you. That said, I hope that 2012 will be a very special
year for LIAS and its members and I want you to know that the
Board of Trustees has been working hard, planning for the upcoming
year. I was very pleased to see such a good turnout at
the LIAS holiday party and a good time was had by all who were
able to attend. Next year’s holiday party will be held on Friday,
December 14 th , so mark your calendars now so that you will be
able to attend as this was a truly enjoyable evening and one not
to be missed. Although we usually hold our annual holiday party
on the same day as we hold our club meetings, the third Friday
of the month, this year the third Friday in December falls quite
close to the holiday. That said, the BOT thought it best to
schedule the LIAS holiday party the week before; specifically,
the second Friday in December. Specifics for the party will be
provided by the October meeting, if not sooner, and detailed in
the Paradise Press and on the LIAS web site.
I would like to say a very special “thank-you” to the committee
who prepared the Christmas gifts that were given out at the holiday
party. They were beautifully wrapped and the time and efforts
that went into this was truly appreciated. Special thanks go
to Nick and Jasmine Arettines, Tracy Marcus, Darryl and
Margarita Shaber, and Steve Abrams. A very big thank you goes
to Nick Arettines once again for all his hard work in putting
together and preparing the annual LIAS calendar. This calendar
is composed of photos of fish that belong to our members and
the photographs were taken by our club members. Digital Print
Plus printed the calendars for us again this year without any cost
to LIAS. They continue to print the Paradise Press for us each
month without cost. We are so very grateful for all they have
done and continue to do for LIAS. Please consider this company
for any of your printing needs.
This month we are happy to welcome back one of our long time
friends, Ed Vukich, who will be speaking to us about the various
types of cichlids he has bred successfully. Ed is an experienced
hobbyist and I am certain you will enjoy his presentation. Thanks
to great efforts on the part of our vice-president, Jon Schweikert,
we will be having a special presentation from a photographer and
a hobbyist at our February meeting. He will go over how to take
good pictures of your fish and aquariums. This is a subject that
has come up many times, especially when taking pictures for the
Paradise Press or to use in our annual calendar. So, please
bring your cameras and your questions and take advantage of
this special offering. In March, we welcome Frank Greco of
Frank’s Aquarium, to LIAS. Frank is the curator at the New York
Aquarium and many of our members know Frank from his participation
in the AFISH conventions. He will be giving a presentation
on the “Fishes of Taiwan.”
The bowl show resumes this month and I would like to see an
increase in the number of participants. Why not consider entering
a fish that you put in the bowl show into the club’s auction? Fish
that are entered into the bowl show should be fish that you raised
or bred. That said, why not use this same fish and make some
money from our auction? We will be providing specific containers
for all bowl show entries and our bowl show chairman, Mitch
Markowski, will be in charge of caring for the bowls. Keep in mind
that points are received for participation in the bowl show. This is
one of the many facets of contributing to the hobby that are tallied
for consideration when selecting the Hobbyist of the Year
award.
Lastly, we will be discussing some new ideas for LIAS in 2012
and hopefully we’ll make some decisions that will help increase
participation and attendance as we continue to move forward in
the year ahead. The winter weather has been mild to date; however,
we still have at least eight weeks of winter remaining. In the
event of inclement weather; please check the club’s website @
www.liasonline.org to see if the meeting has been cancelled. Remember
that if SUNY Stony Brook is closed, there will be no
meeting for LIAS since we use their space to meet!
From the NEC Corner…
By Jim & Margaret Peterson
It’s almost that time again! The NEC convention is quickly
approaching! The date for the 2012 convention is the weekend of
March 23- 25 th and will again be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel
in Berlin, CT. Details regarding registration and a complete listing
of the scheduled speakers can be obtained by accessing the
NEC website @ http://convention.northeastcouncil.org/ Please
note the new web address for the NEC convention! Each workshop
will be 50 minutes in length and have a ten minute time period
for questions and answers. In addition, this year, there wi
ll be a mini auction of the speaker’s own fish that were spoken
about during the presentation.
The list of speakers includes some of the most well-known
names in the aquarium hobby. Among them are: Rhonda Wilson,
former president of the American Livebearers Association and
author of the book, A Guide to the Planted Aquarium, Klaus
Steinhaus, speaking about Central and South American Cichlids,
Scott Fellman, former president of the Marine Aquarium Society
of Los Angeles county, who will be offering a marine presentation,
Spencer Jack, who owns a tropical fish wholesale business
and was president of the Canadian Cichlid Association in 2000,
Hans Georg-Evers, who has 50 tanks from 2 to 200 gallons in
size, filled with primarily Africans and West African Cichlids. Also
speaking are Pat Donston, owner and operator of Absolutely Fish
in New Jersey, an MAC certified facility and retailer of the year
from 2002-2004. Joining Pat is Bob Lewis, vice president of the
International Fancy Guppy Association (IFGA) and a master guppy
breeder. Ken Normandin will be speaking about killifish, particularly
the rivulus species, having at least 300 tanks set up in
his own home. Last but by no means least, is Tony Terciera, a
well-known hobbyist and master photographer, having served as
editor and photo chairman of the Journal of the American Killie
Association (AKA). Continued on page 22
“ How to Become Hobbyist of the Year” in
The View…From the Other Side of the Tank
by Margaret Peterson
You may recall that I referenced the Hobbyist of the Year’s requirements
in last month’s issue of the Paradise Press and I also
discussed why the Board of Trustees of LIAS decided not to bestow
this honor to anyone at the annual holiday party in December.
While going through some LIAS paperwork, I cam across a
very carefully prepared report written by Glenn Peterson for former
LIAS president, Arie Gilbert, that discussed the criteria and
eligibility for this honor. It just so happens that the report was
written the year that Jim and I received this award, which was for
the 2005-2006 year. I thought it might be a good idea to highlight
some of the key facets to earning this award as I feel that all club
members have the capability to win this prestigious award. The
issue is if an individual is willing to put forth the necessary effort
to do so. I have always said that it is not in the club’s best interests
if it is always the same few people who do all the work for
the club. Many hands make less work and I would like to see
“more hands” as we head into the new year.
Every club member should have a copy of the LIAS handbook. If
you do not, please see our membership chairman, Paul Marcus
and ask him to give you a copy. For clarification, some of our current
members were instrumental in putting together the current
by-law for LIAS. Glenn is one of these people. He has served the
club in many ways including, but not limited to having served as
a trustee to the Board for five terms, vice-president for one term,
editor of the Paradise Press for three years, and a committee
member for four of LIAS’ annual auctions. He also helped to write
and create the LIAS by-laws and was a charter corporate officer
when LIAS achieved that desired status back in 1997. Vinny
Kreyling is the other member still active in our club since the time
we applied for and achieved our not-for profit and corporate status
on July 13 th 1997, almost 15 years ago.
Let’s talk about some of the Hobbyist of the Year (HOY) criteria
that Glenn pointed out in his explanation to Arie. . Attendance at
our monthly meetings is one of the first criteria considered for this
6 Paradise Press

award. Points are given for consistent attendance so it is very
important to remember to sign in when you arrive. I usually look
around the room to make certain that I don’t notice someone in
the room whose name is not on the sign-in sheet. Writing articles
or any work for the Paradise Press is given merit particularly if
you are not already holding an elected position. Participation in
the bowl show, which is now being held every other month at the
request of the club members, is also given merit toward receipt
of this award also. It is important to remember that all fish entered
into the bowl show should be fish that are bred and/or
raised by the hobbyist, not fish that have been purchased
through a wholesaler or in an aquarium and then entered into the
bowl show to obtain placement. Several club members voiced
their disapproval over fish that were inappropriately entered into
the bowl shows.
The Breeder’s Award program is another area that club members
have not chosen to participate in to the best of their ability.
Mike Weiner, our breeder’s award chairman, is available and
willing to document fish that have bred for any of our members
who are breeding fish and are eligible to do so. The forms are
also available on the LIAS web site and can be downloaded as
necessary.
Anyone who holds a nominated or elected position earns 25
points towards the goal of winning the HOY award. Give this
some thought when elections are coming up this year. Remember
that I said that the current board has run for a few years now
and I know that they don’t plan to remain in these positions forever!
The annual fish show, which we have not had for several
years now, is a category that has not been given any consideration
primarily since we have not held this event. Hopefully, we
will be having this event in the future, during 2012. The “service”
category is a rather subjective one in that this area refers to a
person who has put forth tremendous effort into the care and
well-being of LIAS.
A Message from the Editor
By: Margarita Shaber
Happy New Year to all of our members. I hope everyone who
attended the Holiday Party had a great time. As we start this
new year, our press is full of interesting items. We have a
Breeders Award update from Michael Wiener, a great story from
Jim Peterson and some great pictures from our Holiday Party.
As I stated in the December issue, I would like to start a “Kids
Corner” in the Paradise Press. Drawings, short stories, and their
experiences with the fish hobby are all welcome. Just send them
to editor@liasonline.org, or you can just give them to me at any
meeting and I will include them into the press. All ages are
welcome!
We are always looking for articles for the press as well as any
pictures you may have. These can be for the press or the
calendar. I know it’s a little early, but it can never be too early for
pictures for the calendar. We are all proud of what we do as fish
hobbyists. Just take a few shots and send them along.
Next month we have Jarrod Gordon and Matthew Schenier who
will show us how to take great pictures of our fish. Please bring
your cameras. We will be using the tank in the lobby. I know I
am looking forward to this. I can’t wait to actually submit pictures
to Nick that I actually took and not Darryl.
One last plea. If you would like to see the press have other
items, less items, etc., please pass on the information to me. We
want the best press there is, and I want to make it what you
want.
Again, I wish you all a Happy and Healthy 2012!
LIAS Breeders Award Program
By Michael Wiener
The LIAS BAP program, which has been in existence since the late
1970’s, is intended to stimulate and encourage its members to become
involved with tropical fish breeding. The program rewards the breeding,
raising, and sharing of offspring and breeding experiences between our
members. Each year, the member who has been the most successful in
breeding fish that year and promoting breeding activities receives the
Breeder of the Year Award. In addition, members accumulate BAP
points and receive special awards as they reach various levels of breeding
proficiency.
It should be noted that over the years our members have bred a wide
variety of tropical fish. The numerous and varied entrants in our monthly
auctions attests to this.
Most, if not all of our club’s members have bred fish and enjoyed the
satisfaction of seeing fry swimming about their tanks. This can be one
the most rewarding and interesting facet of the hobby. Additionally, as
an added benefit, the sale of the resulting offspring can help defray
some of the costs of feeding the fish, maintaining their tanks, and acquiring
new fish.
I urge all our members to get involved with breeding fish. It is not that
hard. Many fish are easy to breed. Just setup a tank, add the adults and
wait for the results. The fish do the rest. Sometimes the fish will breed
in a suitably setup community tank, you won’t need a separate tank. Additional
instructions or breeding guidance can be found in books, magazines,
the internet, or in advice offered by our members and once the
fish have successfully breed, please make sure to fill out the BAP program
forms and give them to Mike Weiner or to the BAP co-chairperson
(TBD). I have blank forms or you can get them at the LIAS internet site.
Periodically we publish the BAP results. There were no entries for the
years (September 1, 2007 through August 31, 2008) and (September 1,
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Bedroom
by Jim Peterson
Since it was after midnight and all the animals, including the fish,
guinea pigs, the dog, birds, rabbits, pigeons, and the goat had
been fed, I began turning off the television and all the aquarium
lights. As I turned off the last bank of fish tank lights, I took a step
and heard a loud “bang” sound and then a high fast flipping
noise, followed by a low flopping noise; not a good combination
of sounds to a hobbyist. I yelled for Margaret to come into the
den with a big flashlight as I quickly determined that one of the
fish had jumped out of the tank.
While my wife was en route with the flashlight, I dropped to my
knees to look on the floor behind the tank to see what could be
done. Margaret joined me on the floor and we found ourselves
face to face with our German Shepherd, Xena, who thought we
must be down on the floor to play with her. How good could this
get for her! Now our next step was to get her 85lb. body out of
our way. Xena was soon banished to our bedroom and crying
because she was removed from the fun we were having. We can
now continue without her help.
In case anybody doesn’t know, over my 125 gallon tank, I built a
wood stand that now holds nine 71/2 & 51/2 galloon tanks that I
breed my guppies in. I did this so that I would not have to crawl
on my old knees down by the bottom part of the stand to see and
admire these fish. Unfortunately, in my attempt to make the stand
sturdy, I added a cross beam under the bottom shelf. This very
same support beam blocks my view when trying to see underneath
this stand. My wife says that I set up tanks in any spot that
will hold them. She is partially right. Next I took the spotlight and
went alongside the folding table that hold my koi and goldfish and
marlieri tanks and located the fish lying on the rug between the
tank and the baseboard. It’s one of my frontosa! I should not try
to breed frontosa because I have had calamitous situations occur
when they get old enough to do so. The first occurrence was
when we had a popcorn ceiling installed and either the vapors or
the crumbles wiped out the whole tank of seven frontosa. I
bought more at Christmas for Margaret. Continued on page 14
Paradise Press 13

I bought eleven of them to be exact and at $35. each. They had
babies and did well until one day I smelled something horrible
and apparently one had died in the 180 gallon tank that was their
home. It was very hard to find the one that died as there were
many hiding places that these frontosa had created within this
tank. After removing the first dead body I discovered several others
as the first one that died had fouled the water since I did not
know a rather large fish had died and was rotting in that tank.
Only three survived this disaster and one was barely hanging on.
I did a massive water change and the fish that was struggling
died while I was changing the water. I ended up with the two largest
of the frontosas, both of them being the male.
I decided to buy some large females and while I was preparing
for their entrance into this tank and the bags containing the females
were floating in the 180 gallon tank, the two males killed
the females still in the bags! I have since bought others and have
them in two other locations until I can switch things around and
get my two males and their surviving baby to cohabitate and
breed.
It was one of the newer frontosa that managed to squeeze between
the filter and the narrow slit in front of the glass top on the
125 gallon aquarium set-up. That was the “bang” that I heard and
the flipping noise as it flittered across the filter stream only to
swim off the filter and onto the floor. I grabbed my biggest net
and showed Margaret where the fish was so she could direct me
as I reached over the top of the tanks I installed on the bottom
shelf- (Of course those tanks were not empty…) My first attempt
at scooping the fish into the net put it halfway under the baseboard.
I grabbed a smaller net and slid it out from under the
baseboard towards the big net. My second sweep succeeded in
getting the fish into the big net. I was so relieved. I squeezed out
from between the tanks, my neck throbbing from the awkward
angle I put it in to fit. I then lifted the net very carefully, only to
find no fish in it! I didn’t even feel the fish jump while paying attention
to my own extrication. I looked down and see the fish lying
on top of the light of the 15 gallon tank. I push it back into the
big net, lift gently, and the fish is back on the , this time on the
rug in front of the tanks. Continued on page 19
On the Way to the Bedroom
It seems that the whole seam on the big net came apart, perhaps
unraveling when I caught it on something. I scooped the fish into
the other side of the net and lifted her, a bit dusty, back into her
watery home
I laughed after it was all over. I was supposed to put the grandchildren’s
toys under that table so that we could move the houseplants
by the window and make room for the Christmas tree.
Once again, procrastination pays. I would have had to move
them out for the tree and back again. The frontosa lived; my luck
with them is starting to change. I’m glad because my wife bought
me some large female frontosa for Christmas that is due to arrive
soon.
Correction from Decembers edition. The directions to
Caribbean Blue were incorrect.
Caribbean Blue Aquatics by Jim Peterson
I know some of you may have seen or passed by the new aquarium
that opened up recently on the south side of Sunrise Highway,
on the south service road just west of the exit for Brentwood
Road in Bay Shore. This aquarium was once known as
Lots of Fish, located on the south side of Montauk Highway, at
the western end of Route 231, in Babylon. Owned and operated
by Joe Rosati and Dominick Caserma, the store is open for business
at their new location, despite not being finished with all the
details of readying an aquarium business, especially if you have
any perfectionist tendencies as Joe has.
Sorry if this has caused anyone any problems finding Caribbean
Blue Aquatics
The View…From the Other Side of the Tank
As I am certain you realize after reading this article, there is a
great deal that factors into the awarding of the HOY to a club
member. There is also a great deal of work on the part of the
HOY chairman, Glenn Peterson, to determine who meets and
has earned the HOY award for LIAS. We are very grateful to
Glenn for all he has done on behalf of LIAS in past years and
going forward and I do hope that if all our members have a greater
understanding of what this award is all about that maybe
someone will strive to reach this prestigious goal. The LIAS
Board would be very pleased to be giving out the Hobbyist of the
Year award during the 2012 holiday party. Are you going to be
this year’s winner?
