Grammar Focus: Use of “<strong>to</strong>”<br />
Use ―<strong>to</strong>‖ <strong>to</strong> designate a place = I’m go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re / <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> beach / <strong>to</strong> my job / <strong>to</strong> work /<br />
<strong>to</strong> GPO. You must specify <strong>the</strong> place.<br />
Do not use ―<strong>to</strong>‖ with: home, here, <strong>the</strong>re, up-, down- NOT = I’m go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> go <strong>to</strong> home /<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>re, etc.<br />
Do not use ―<strong>to</strong>‖ with a gerund (verb + -<strong>in</strong>g) NOT = I like <strong>to</strong> swimm<strong>in</strong>g / <strong>to</strong> eat<strong>in</strong>g / <strong>to</strong><br />
read<strong>in</strong>g, etc. Do not use ―<strong>to</strong>‖ <strong>to</strong> designate a gerund. Not = I’m go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> go <strong>to</strong> swimm<strong>in</strong>g<br />
/ <strong>to</strong> jogg<strong>in</strong>g / <strong>to</strong> shopp<strong>in</strong>g, etc<br />
Use ―<strong>to</strong>‖ as part of many <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itives = I like <strong>to</strong> watch / <strong>to</strong> eat / <strong>to</strong> go / <strong>to</strong> dance / <strong>to</strong> s<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
etc. ―To‖ is used <strong>to</strong> designate a verb, if it’s <strong>the</strong> reason for <strong>the</strong> action = We are go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> go<br />
<strong>to</strong> Colorado <strong>to</strong> ski. We are go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> go <strong>to</strong> watch a move. When not a reason, <strong>the</strong> ―<strong>to</strong>‖ is<br />
not necessary <strong>in</strong> such sentences = We are go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> go (<strong>to</strong>) shop. We’re gonna go (<strong>to</strong>) eat<br />
now. Exception: ―We are go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> go <strong>to</strong> sleep,‖ which would not normally mean <strong>the</strong><br />
reason for go<strong>in</strong>g, but simply <strong>the</strong> act of sleep<strong>in</strong>g. Us<strong>in</strong>g ―<strong>to</strong>‖ with <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itives is complex.<br />
See appendix p.111 for fur<strong>the</strong>r discussion.<br />
