AI6 QUESNEI CARIBOO OBSERVER • Sunday, February 17,2002 NEIL HORNER Observer Reporter Over the years, Gertrude Fraser became somewhat used to meeting royalty. The wife of former mayor and MLA Alex Fraser, she was on hand to welcome many high profile people, including Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana and Prince Charles. But on that warm July day in 1958 when Princess fvlargaret came to call, she admits to having been a little nervous. After all, it was to be her first brush with royalty. "We were expecting her in the morning, but she didn't come until the evening, so we were on pins and needles all day,"" she said. "I was a little nervous and had a new set of shoes and a purse to match, and I kept looking in the mirror to make sure PEOPLE ————rr— intisiorsi my hat was on the right angle. When the train came around the bend, that's when I got really nervous." Princess Margaret was only in town for a few hours, but she took full advantage of the opportunity, takirig an excursion around Quesnel in a car supplied by Chuck Beath, who then drove her to her official ceremony at LeBourdais Park. "They had a platform with chairs set up and she met a lot of the old timers," Fraser remembered. "Thousands of people were there to see her, and you have to remember, Quesnel wasn't as large then as it is now, so that was really something. I couldn't believe how many people came out." "She was different from her sister, the Queen," she said. "She liked to party and she had a couple of boyfriends. She had just broken up with her first, Mr. Townsend, and we all thought that this was why she took the tour, to get away from it all." Before she knew it, the big day was over and Princess Margaret had once again boarded her special train, waved farewell and headed down the tracks to Williams Lake. When she heard that the princess had passed away, Fraser said it was sad news indeed, but not entirely unexpected. "She was sick for some time," she said. It's sad she passed on, but she wasn't well. She had had several strokes already. Still, it was very unfortunate." However, the memory of that visit remains, as do the memories of several other royal encounters. "When Alex was mayor, we met all sorts of visitors and he said he wouldn't be surprised if we met royalty one day," she said. "Sure enough, I met'with Princess Diana "She was different from her sister, the Queen. She liked to party and she had a couple of boyfriends. Her meeting with Princess Diana took place just before Expo 86, on a specially commissioned ferry. "Ferries were under Alex's ministry, so we were presented to them when they came," she remembered. "She seemed kind of shy, quite quiet. The Prince took a salute from a navy ship that came alongside the ferry, with all the sailors lined up along the deck." .Of her three meetings with Queen Elizabeth, one stands out particularly vivid in her memory. "I met the Queen one time in Kamloops," she said. "At first I wasn't going to go because I had a cast on my leg and it's very hard to curtsy with a cast on, but I practiced and decided to go. I left my crutches at home, even though it wasn't a walking cast because I didn't want to be on crutches when I met the Queen. When we met them, I was behind Alex and at first I thought they wouldn't notice me, but Prince Philip noticed my cast and asked Alex what he did to his wife, adding that he hoped I would get well soon." Emerald Ball event to celebrate Foundation Black tie evening sure to be the social event^ the season NEIL HORNER Observer Reporter When the Quesnel Community Foundation liolds its kickoff event this spring, organizers are hoping it will be the social event of the season. The Emerald Ball, slated for Saturday, April 13, will be a black tie and evening gown affair, says organizer Francine Gaetz. In an interview Thursday, Gaetz said the event will be the first of what she says will become annual fund raising auctions and social evenings for Quesnel's leading citizens. "We'll have prominent speakers from the Canadian Foundation and the Vancouver Foundation and a fund raising auction," Gaetz said. "It. will be a social event, with light appetizers and nice, easy listening background music." The event will also see this year's grant recipients handed their cheques and asked to give a short speech about where the money will be going. The Quesnel Community Foundation was formed with a $50,000 legacy grant from the B.C. Winter Games, as well as a $50,000 grant from the Dalton Hooken Quesnel Community Foundation is snowballing nicely. City of Quesnel. Since then, the foundation has received $25,000 from the Vancouver Foundation, along with a promise of an additional $25,000 if the local group can raise $75,000 of their own. Other donations have also come in from the local community, bringing in an estimated $10,000. Grants will be handed out each year from the interest accrued by the foundation's capital. Director Dalton Hooker, the foundation hopes COMMUNITY to raise an additional $150,000 this year, with an eventual goal of having half a million dollars in the bankvvithin five years. The interest on the money already obtained wiil allow a total of $6,700 at the Emerald Ball event, and that total will grow as the money continues to roll in. "It's like a snowball," Hooker said. "It keeps on getting bigger." The ball will prove to be an-important part of that snowballing process. "We want to create a prominent social event that professionals, executives and others can go to and have a good time and know that the money they give is going to a good cause right here in the community," he said. "In other places where this type of event has been held it has been considered the social event of the year." Tickets for the Emerald Ball can be picked up for $30 each at Northland Mortgages, R.E.
