Grinnell Housing Initiative First home underway as part of Housing Initiative Vern and Jane Dostal are building the first home that will take advantage of incentives offered through the Grinnell Housing Initiative, facilitated by the Grinnell Area Chamber of Commerce. They are working with VanderLinden Construction to build their villa at Prairie Pointe. “Having lived in the country for so long, we love the country feel that the Prairie Pointe location offers, and yet we have all the conveniences of being in town,” Jane Dostal said. Dave Vander Linden of Vander Linden Construction is one of six area home builders who are working with the Chamber on the initiative. “We appreciate the Grinnell Chamber of Commerce for identifying the city’s critical need for mid-income housing, and believe that this initiative will go a long way in correcting a housing shortfall that has been an issue for a number of years,” Vander Linden said. His company is offering Grinnell Housing Initiative Goals ➢ Stimulate the market to increase housing stock for middle incomes. ➢ Better utilize community infrastructure through in fill and redevelopment, proactively managing density. ➢ Match housing demand with the needs of Grinnell’s workforce thus supplying our growing companies with the employees they need. ➢ Increase our population to better support Grinnell's schools and business community. additional incentives on top of the incentives already in place through the Housing Initiative. Residents and in-commuters are both eligible for the Housing Initiatives's incentive program. The program requirements include building a $150,000 to $250,000 home on an approved lot within city limits (see map to right) and using an approved builder. Priority will be given to projects that purchase at least 75 percent of the home’s materials locally and use a majority of local subcontractors. A home must be built on one of these approved lots to take advantage of Housing Initiative incentives. Dining: Restaurant Contest Carly Groben wins restaurant contest, Prairie Canary opening at 926 Main St. Former Des Moines restauranteur and award-winning chef Carly Groben has been hard at work preparing to open a new restaurant at 926 Main St. in Grinnell, named Prairie Canary. Groben won nearly everything she needs to start a new restaurant in Grinnell by securing the top spot at Iowa’s Best Bite Restaurant Challenge on August 1. Her menu is focused on comfort food with local flair. It will include traditional American food with plenty of vegetarian options for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. There will also be a bar in the lower level. By winning the contest, Groben earned $10,000 in startup cash, $15,000 in inventory, $10,000 in small wares, a professional branding package by Art A La Carte, membership in Dine Iowa through the Iowa Restaurant Association and much more. A panel of more than a dozen judges representing Grinnell’s diverse population along with some industry leaders chose Groben’s restaurant based on her fresh, casual approach to New American cuisine and her dedication to the community of Grinnell. “Carly had been looking in Grinnell before the contest even started and really demonstrated that she wanted to be here,” said Dick Knapp, a contest organizer and owner of the restaurant building. “We really loved everything about her concept, from the atmosphere to the menus to the pricing. We felt this would be a great everyday restaurant for Grinnellians, and also a destination restaurant sure to draw diners from outside the community.” Groben is the former owner of Des Moines' Proof and Flour restaurants. The restaurant contest resulted in 44 entries from seven states. Three finalists were selected to prepare sample menu items and present their concept to the panel of judges.
