<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Juha</strong> P. <strong>Kokko</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>recipient</strong> of <strong>the</strong> 2005 Berliner/Abbott<br />
Award. In 1964, <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Kokko</strong> became <strong>the</strong> first student to graduate<br />
from Emory’s combined M.D./Ph.D. program. After graduation,<br />
<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Kokko</strong> did h<strong>is</strong> internship and residency at <strong>the</strong> Johns Hopkins<br />
Hospitals and <strong>the</strong>n became a Clinical Associate and Chief Resident<br />
at <strong>the</strong> National Heart Institute in Be<strong>the</strong>sda, Maryland. In<br />
1969, <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Kokko</strong> moved to Southwestern Medical School in<br />
Dallas, where he establ<strong>is</strong>hed <strong>the</strong> technique of perfusing <strong>is</strong>olated<br />
kidney tubules in vitro and rapidly rose through <strong>the</strong> academic<br />
ranks to be promoted to Professor of Medicine and Chief of<br />
Nephrology within just 5 years. In Texas, he authored more than<br />
100 original works with <strong>the</strong> central <strong>the</strong>me of mechan<strong>is</strong>ms of salt<br />
and water transport across various nephron segments. The clinical<br />
significance of th<strong>is</strong> work has been <strong>the</strong> understanding of salt,<br />
acid-base, and volume homeostas<strong>is</strong> in health and d<strong>is</strong>ease. He also<br />
has authored a number of books and book chapters including<br />
Fluid and Electrolytes, which he coedited with Richard Tannen,<br />
M.D., and has been one of six principal editors of Cecil’s<br />
Textbook of Medicine. He has trained over 100 postdoctoral<br />
fellows, many of whom are now directors of Div<strong>is</strong>ions of Nephrology at o<strong>the</strong>r prestigious universities.<br />
In 1984, he was elected as <strong>the</strong> president of <strong>the</strong> American Society of Nephrology. <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Kokko</strong> was recruited<br />
in 1986 to become <strong>the</strong> Asa G. Candler Professor and Chairman of Medicine of Emory School of<br />
Medicine and now <strong>is</strong> an Emeritus Professor of Medicine who still enjoys participating in various Emory<br />
teaching m<strong>is</strong>sions.<br />
