At last, the East VOLUME
AT Inland lIvIng, we are always looking for
ways to better serve and engage our community.
To that end, we’ve broken off our eastern
distribution area as the separate magazine you see here:
Inland living East, which is a quarterly designed
primarily to serve Redlands, Highland, Yucaipa and parts
of San Bernardino and surrounding communities.
This separate product also will have a larger circulation
in the immediate area. Most copies still will be delivered
directly to homes, but a portion will be set aside for
delivery to high-traffic locations to make Inland living
East easier to find when it’s not already on your doorstep.
In our first modest offering, we bring you the backstory
on the Redlands Bicycle Classic, recipes from Isabella’s and a profile on Judge Marsha
Slough and her involvement with the CaSa program. Special thanks go
Jennifer M. dobbs, who as an editing partner in this product, contributed consistently
dedicated and dependable efforts.
The
big
A poster and an idea
get the wheels turning
for Redlands event
By KEVIN TRUDGEON
On March 26, the Redlands Bicycle Classic
will celebrate 25 years of success.
The brainchild of former Redlands
Mayor Carole Beswick, former City Councilman
Dick Larsen and racing aficionado Peter Brandt, the
annual competition came to be through hard work,
determination and just a little bit of luck.
While attending a main street conference in
1984, Beswick was looking for something to help
rejuvenate downtown Redlands and bring people
and business into the city.
“I was attending this conference at the same time
the 1984 Olympics were going on and I remember
watching some of the road races,” Beswick recalled.
“One day we were in a conference about how to
save old downtowns and I saw a poster that said,
‘Inland Empire Cycling Classic.’
12 | inlandlivingmagazine.com | april 09
spin
“I hadn’t heard of it, so I went up to the guy who was
talking and asked him about it,” she added. “It turned out
that the poster was for Spokane, Washington, where they
have an area they call the Inland Empire.”
Intrigued, Beswick asked questions about the cycling
event and began formulating an idea.
“On the plane ride back home, I wrote up a proposal
and when I got back to Redlands I talked to Dick (Larsen)
and John Holmes and they thought it was a great idea.”
There was one problem, though. Nobody knew
anything about bicycle racing.
Enter Peter Brandt.
“At that time, I was actually trying to organize
a single-day event on a much smaller scale,”
said Brandt, who has competed in national
and international races.
Brandt talked to the Redlands police chief
about the logistics behind putting on a race.
Then Beswick called.
“I thought she had gotten wind of what
I was trying to do, but it turned out we just
had a common interest,” Brandt recalled.
Armed with a racing expert, the team
of Beswick, Larsen and Brandt began to put
together a plan to stage a race the following year.
“What appealed to us about cycling was you
don’t need a venue,” Beswick said. “You don’t
need a stadium or an arena. The race takes place
on the streets, and the spectators are right up
on the action.”
They decided to stage the race on Memorial
Day weekend to keep people in town and also
help bring more business to Redlands.
“We wanted to give people something that
would not only excite them, but also make them
want to be a part of it,” Larsen said. “And we
‘You don’t need
a stadium or an
arena. The race
takes place on
the streets, and
the spectators
are right up
on the action.’
Cyclists await the start of the next stage of the Redlands Bicycle Classic.
just thought this event would be a lot
of fun.”
Using their skills and knowledge — as
well as several instances of simply winging
it — Beswick, Larsen and Brandt spent the
next months organizing, planning and
eventually putting on the inaugural race.
A quarter of a century later, the
Redlands Bicycle Classic is the oldest
continuous stage race in the United States.
“I don’t think anybody involved in the
beginning had thoughts that it would
become what it is,” said Craig Kundig,
who served as the public race director the
first year. “I know after the first year we
were all very excited with how successful
it was and we wanted to do a second one,
but I don’t think anybody thought it’d
last this long.”
For Brandt, the legacy of what he helped
create is evident in a memento he has from
that first race. “I have this picture
of my son and he’s participating
in the 3-year old’s race that first
year,” Brandt said.
“Now he’s all grown up and
married. That just shows you how
long it’s been. For it to have lasted
Veteran cyclist Neil Shirley will be making his
sixth appearance at the Redlands Bicycle
Classic.
Shirley, 30, a member of the Kelly Benefit
Strategies team, started racing mountain bikes
when he was 15 years old. Already a
professional mountain biker, he turned pro as a
road cyclist five years ago, and finished third at
the USPRO Road Race Championships in 2007.
“I look forward to racing in Redlands every
year because my family can come out,” says
Shirley, who lives in the San Diego area. “There’s
a lot of people cheering for me so it’s super
motivating. It’s also my first big race of the
season. I always like to start off well because
it sets the tone for the whole season.”
Excelling in high places, Shirley has won the
King of the Mountains jersey at the prestigious
Tour of Utah and the Philadelphia Invitational.
Those climbing skills should prove helpful during
the Redlands Bicycle Classic — particularly
along the 22.3-mile Beaumont stage, which
gains 1,000 feet in elevation.
Shirley is a standout among the nearly
300 professional riders who will be competing,
says RBC marketing director Scott Welsh.
“Neil is a tremendous ambassador for the
sport of cycling,” Welsh says. “When he’s not
racing and training, he works with amateur
cyclists to help them become better.”
range of viewing opportunities for spectators.
Professional races
Thursday, March 26
Professional riders kick-off the event with a
5-km Individual Time Trial that will test their
hill climbing ability.
This event will begin on Highland Avenue just
east of Redlands Boulevard and finish on
Sunset Drive near Panorama Point. Riders will
begin at 30-second intervals. The course will
be closed to traffic.
Recommended viewing locations include
the start on Highland Avenue, the corner
of Highland Ave and Ford Street, the corner
of Ford Street and Reservoir Road, the hill on
Wabash Avenue from the freeway to Sunset
Drive, and the finish line on Sunset Drive.
Parking will not be permitted on the race
course, but spectator parking will be available
on side streets. Wear walking shoes and take
the opportunity to view riders from various
locations along the course during the fourhour
period that riders will be competing.
Women riders begin at 10 a.m. and men
begin at noon.
Friday, March 27
Professional riders continue their four-day
event with a point-to-point road race.
Spectator information was not available
at press time.
Saturday, March 28
Rotary Rides begin at 7:30, 7:45 and 8 a.m.,
depending on the distance chosen (6, 12, 33 or
60 miles) by participants. These rides will start
on Citrus Avenue between Fifth and Sixth
streets and cyclists begin their journeys
headed west on Citrus Avenue. All of the rides
will end in Smiley Park between the A.K.
Smiley Public Library and the Lincoln Shrine.
Public races begin at 9 a.m. on Citrus Avenue
between Fifth and Sixth streets. Riders will
gender between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Recommended viewing locations include
Citrus Avenue between Orange Street and
Sixth Street. Come early, because the best
viewing locations near the start/finish may be
crowded, particularly on the upper level of the
parking structure. Other excellent viewing
locations are at the corners of Citrus Avenue
and Orange Street and Citrus Avenue.
Parking may be hard to find on Saturday, so
be prepared to walk several blocks to reach
The professional women take to the streets
at 1:30 p.m. for a 60-minute Criterium on a
1 mile course using the same start/finish line
as the public races. The professional men
will race on the same course in a 90-minute
Criterium beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Recommended viewing locations are the
same as those noted above for the public
races plus the corners of Cajon Street and
Olive Avenue, Olive Avenue and Fourth
Street, and Fourth Street and Vine. One
particularly good viewing location is the
corner of Cajon and Vine because the
riders pass this intersection twice each lap.
Due to the duration of these events, you may
take the opportunity to view the races from
several different locations.
Sunday, March 29
Non-professional riders, licensed by USA
Cycling, will compete in eight separate races
on the same 0.65-mile course used by some
of the public races. Some riders will compete
30 to 90 minutes long. The first race will
begin at 7:30 a.m. and the last race will
end at 4 p.m. Viewing locations for these
races are the same as those noted above
for the public races.
At 10 a.m. during a short break in the
schedule of races for licensed riders, the
professional women will begin their
99-km Sunset Road Race. This event
begins and ends at the start/finish line
on Citrus Avenue, but most of the race
takes place on a loop course on the hills
in a residential area south of downtown
Redlands. The women’s race will finish
shortly before 1 p.m. and the professional
men will begin their 142-km race on the
same course at 1:30 p.m., finishing at
approximately 5 p.m.
There are many good viewing locations
along the Sunset Loop course. The loop
starts and ends at the fire station located
at Garden Rossmont. Three exciting
corners are viewable from Simonds
For Isabella’s
rIstorante owners,
love oF good Food
Is key to success
By BETTS GRIFFONE
Photos by ERIc REED
It was an InauspIcIous begInnIng for Isabella’s
Ristorante owners Ruth and Martin Felix.
“we met over a steam table, so to speak,” Ruth says.
actually, both worked in the same restaurant and
a love of good food drew them together.
the Felixes started their small chain of restaurants in
san bernardino, where they depended on a busy lunch
crowd to carry the business. success led them to open a
Redlands location 14 years ago and another one in corona
five years after that.
about two years ago, downtown san bernardino could
no longer support Isabella’s, so the original location was
closed. but not long after that, the Felixes opened a new
place in calimesa.
Much of the staff at all three restaurants is family. Martin
is the executive chef, with two of his nephews running the
kitchen in Redlands and his two brothers heading the
cooking staffs in corona and calimesa. everyone was trained
Futtuccine Viviana
under Martin, so all of the recipes maintain consistency
and the kitchens are compatible.
Martin grew up in Riverside. He started in the food trade
working under Giusepe Pitruzello in Riverside, then went
on to train under two other Italian chefs in Los Angeles
and Orange counties.
Ruth describes the food at Isabella’s as classic Italian
cooked in a Northern Italian style — no pastes, sugars
or purees. The chefs use only fresh whole tomatoes and
fresh cream in the sauces.
Fettuccine Viviana, with a combination of grilled chicken
and sun-dried tomatoes, is one of Martin’s signature dishes,
but most of the menu selections are recipes that date back
hundreds of years. The Felixes like to think of it as traditional
comfort food.
One or two types of fresh fish are served every day, depending on
market availability, along with one featured menu item — especially
created for that evening. Often, it is a stuffed ravioli or a chicken dish.
Soups also change daily.
Most of the desserts are made in-house. Creme brulee, tiramisu
and cannoli are made fresh each day in the restaurant.
Isabella’s offers a full bar in Redlands and Calimesa, and beer
and wine is available in all three locations. The wine list, though
not extensive, is well balanced. The restaurant can accommodate
special parties and groups. Food-to-go also is available.
Ruth and Martin Felix feel that if you are in the food business,
it should be a passion. You have to love it to make it work.
BIG DAY, BEAUTIFUL
LOOK
By CHRISTINA M. GAUDY
BRIDES have a couple of primary
options when it comes to wedding
makeup
— do their own or hire a professional.
Either way, it’s a good idea to plan ahead.
A fun way to consider different makeup
possibilities is to look through bridal
magazines for inspiration.
Choosing bridal colors for eyes, cheeks
and lips can be tricky, so practicing with
different looks on your own or with a
professional artist can help narrow down
the choices.
If the bride chooses to do her own
makeup, she should first evaluate her
current makeup
kit, then
artists are often scheduled well in
advance. During the consultation,
ask about the artist’s skill level.
Also, think about how easy it will
be to work with her. It’s important
to have an artist who will come up
with a look that both the artist
and bride can be proud of.
On the biggest day of a bride’s
life, she will want a makeup artist
bride star treatment, leaving her
one less thing to worry about.
Beauty tips
For brides who will be doing their own makeup
for the big day, here are some basic suggestions
that are sure to help.
Eyes: Start with a special eye-shadow base,
or concealer, all over the lid to hold the color in
place for the day and also blend well. Use fluffier
brushes for the mid-toned eye-shadow colors in
the highest part of the crease.
If a more dramatic look is desired, use smaller,
detail brushes to add smoky accents to the outer
corners of the eye, along the bottom lash line,
and even to the deeper crease. To finish, sweep
highlighter shadows under the brow line and
press them into the lid area, directly over the iris,
for a “pop.”
Smoky eyes are achieved by lining the eyes
with a very sharp pencil right on top of the lash
line and sometimes the inner rims. Be careful to
follow the lash line exactly and keep the line thin.
Individual false lashes, or an understated row
of lashes will bring density to the lash line and
minimize the need for mascara.
Face: Apply concealer to spot cover dark
circles and skin irregularities prior to foundation
application. Apply the correct shade of foundation
to the middle of the face, blending out and down.
(Pressed Mineral Foundation is optimal here for
ease of use and performance.) Liquid foundations
must be set with loose translucent powder for
staying power.
Cheeks: Powdered blush is dusted lightly to
“apples” of the cheek, while bronzer (a pro-artist
favorite) will bring a sun-kissed look to the face,
neck and chest. It can be used under blush or
over blush. It’s also fantastic for arms and legs!
Lips: They are most often kept neutral to
balance out the eyes.
One more note: Take along a few key items
for last-minute touch-ups. Don’t leave home without
blot powder compact to absorb any shine
break-through on the face. For lip color
re-touches, carry lip liner, lipstick and gloss in
the original colors used. And, in a pinch, bronzer
with retractable brush can do the trick for a
quick touch of color for face or body.
And finally: For more tips, don’t miss
A champion for children
By LUANNE J. HUNT
There are many children’s advocate
programs that provide qualified professionals
and volunteers with an opportunity to make
a difference.
among them is the Court appointed Special
advocates (CaSa) association, a national agency
with a branch in San Bernardino. Through
recommendation by a juvenile court judge, the
organization assigns volunteer advocates to watch
San Bernardino County’s presiding juvenile court
judge, marsha Slough, has been recommending
volunteer advocates for CaSa since 2007. Through that
work, she has witnessed the life-changing power of
community involvement.
“In my profession, you hear the worst of the worst,”
Slough said. “That is why having the opportunity
to work with programs like CaSa is so wonderful.
To get out into the community and encourage people
to be engaged in every way that they can is really
a de-stresser.
“It puts a whole new shade on the bad because you
see all of the good that’s being done.”
Slough has lived in redlands since 1980. She spent
14 years as a civil litigation attorney
before becoming a judge. The Kansas
native received her law degree from
Whittier College School of Law.
Slough enjoyed being a lawyer, but her
heart was set on making a greater impact
on the community. When she had the
opportunity to become a judge, it seemed
like the right avenue to pursue.
With gavel in hand, Slough took the
bench in the Adult Criminal Division
of the San Bernardino County Court in
2003. Two years ago, she moved to the
Juvenile Court Division — and a different
way of doing things.
“There’s no jury, so it rests solely on
me to decide on what will happen to the
kids,” she said. “My decisions are very
complex and often heart-wrenching.”
Thanks to programs like CASA, Slough
admits her verdicts are a little easier to
render. She takes comfort knowing there
are people in the community and beyond
who are devoted to helping kids lead
better lives.
CASA was implemented in 1977
by Seattle Superior Court Judge David
Soukup. It has a network of more than
59,000 volunteers nationwide who have
served more than 240,000 abused and
neglected children.
Kara Hunter, program manager for
CASA’s San Bernardino branch, said there
are more than 5,000 children living in
San Bernardino County who need help.
“We want to get that message out there
that ordinary community members can
get involved with our program and help
change the lives of so many kids,” she
said. “They deserve to be happy and paid
Law Offices of
Geoffrey H. Hopper
& Associates, Inc.
Since the 6 th grade Geoffrey Hopper wanted to be a
lawyer. Why did he want to be a lawyer? “Because it’s
emotionally charging and things are always changing.”
For over 28 years, Geoffrey Hopper has handled
literally thousands of cases throughout the Inland
Empire . One of his most prominent cases was more
recently in 2008 where he received a $12.2 million
dollar jury verdict. Further into the year 2008, his
book entitled “Handling Employment for Bosses and
Supervisors,” was released which is now available
at Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com as well as Borders
bookstores. Another important event in his legal
life was his election as the President of the Riverside
County Bar Association back in 1994. When asked
his favorite quote, Hopper replied, “If you tell the
truth you don’t have to remember anything”, from
Mark Twain. His favorite publication as it relates to
the law field was “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
Geoffrey is not only on the “Best Attorneys in America”
list, but also has received the highest independent
rating thereby putting him in the top 4% of attorneys
in North America, handling all forms of labor and
employment law as well as business law. He currently
works with over 600 corporations that have anywhere
from 2 employees to as many as 20,000 employees.
Geoffrey has conducted more than a thousand lectures
and seminars covering more than 30 topics in labor
and employment law for Universities, Colleges, Bar
Associations, corporations, various public entities and
organizations throughout the state of California.
Final Comments: “While certainly contrary to public
sentiment, right, wrong or indifferent, I sincerely feel
it is an honor to be a part of this profession. There is
never a boring or dull moment and it makes me feel
useful, but most of all it supports my view that if you
like what you do then you will be good at it. Bottom
line, I love what I do!”
