A champion for children<br />

There are many children’s advoc<strong>at</strong>e<br />

programs th<strong>at</strong> provide qualified professionals<br />

and volunteers with an opportunity to make<br />

a difference.<br />

among them is the Court appointed Special<br />

advoc<strong>at</strong>es (CaSa) associ<strong>at</strong>ion, a n<strong>at</strong>ional agency<br />

with a branch in San Bernardino. Through<br />

recommend<strong>at</strong>ion by a juvenile court judge, the<br />

organiz<strong>at</strong>ion assigns volunteer advoc<strong>at</strong>es to w<strong>at</strong>ch<br />

over abused and neglected children.<br />

judge, marsha <strong>Slough</strong>, has been recommending<br />

volunteer advoc<strong>at</strong>es for CaSa since 2007. Through th<strong>at</strong><br />

work, she has witnessed the life-changing power of<br />

community involvement.<br />

“In my profession, you hear the worst of the worst,”<br />

<strong>Slough</strong> said. “Th<strong>at</strong> is why having the opportunity<br />

to work with programs like CaSa is so wonderful.<br />

To get out into the community and encourage people<br />

to be engaged in every way th<strong>at</strong> they can is really<br />

a de-stresser.<br />

“It puts a whole new shade on the bad because you<br />

see all of the good th<strong>at</strong>’s being done.”<br />

<strong>Slough</strong> has lived in redlands since 1980. She spent<br />
