“At that time, I was actually trying to organize
a single-day event on a much smaller scale,”
said Brandt, who has competed in national
and international races.
Brandt talked to the Redlands police chief
about the logistics behind putting on a race.
Then Beswick called.
“I thought she had gotten wind of what
I was trying to do, but it turned out we just
had a common interest,” Brandt recalled.
Armed with a racing expert, the team
of Beswick, Larsen and Brandt began to put
together a plan to stage a race the following year.
“What appealed to us about cycling was you
don’t need a venue,” Beswick said. “You don’t
need a stadium or an arena. The race takes place
on the streets, and the spectators are right up
on the action.”
They decided to stage the race on Memorial
Day weekend to keep people in town and also
help bring more business to Redlands.
“We wanted to give people something that
would not only excite them, but also make them
want to be a part of it,” Larsen said. “And we
