Okay, everyOne— STOp, Take a 

deep breath, and spend the next 

couple of minutes hearing me out. 

This has been a challenging year 

to say the least. Thankfully, we are 

slowly coming out of the worst 

economic crisis since the Great 

Depression, but there are still a lot 

of difficulties to overcome. Precious 

metals pricing has skyrocketed, and 

diamond and gemstone values are 

wildly fluctuating. As if that’s not 

enough, the Internet continues to 

bring fierce, new competition with 

lower margins and bigger selections, 

as well as a more educated and 

demanding consumer. 

So what are we going to do about 

it? First, we need to keep a positive 

attitude; we can take advantage of 

these crises by implementing quick 

and decisive shifts in the old 

paradigms that aren’t working in this 

fast-changing new world. Your new 

title should be Director of Change 

Management; and it’s up to you to 

sell your team on new ideas. Be 

smart, be deliberate and try not to

make too many changes at one time. 

After all, you and your staff need 

time for re-training – not to mention 

some re-thinking – before you can 

offer new ideas to your customer.
