VCAT officers investigate the target be<strong>for</strong>e starting their<br />

search. They determine where the wanted people and their<br />

families live, where else they might stay and who might<br />

know where to find them.<br />

They study the person’s criminal record and learn whether<br />

he or she is known to carry a weapon or fight police.<br />

Hummel said the team has quickly become a vital part of<br />

the CMPD.<br />

“The Violent Criminal Apprehension Team is trained to take<br />

violent criminals into custody the safest way possible,” she<br />

said. “They are taking dangerous people off the streets and<br />

doing it in a way that ensures community safety.”<br />

should do if they know where to find one of them.<br />

VCAT officers practice searching an area where a dangerous suspect may be hiding.<br />

The SWAT Team was searching a home <strong>for</strong> a robbery suspect when the suspect began shooting through the walls. After a short pause,<br />

Officer Cotton saw the man fire from a second-story window. He returned fire, wounding the suspect and protecting his fellow officers from<br />

additional gunfire.<br />
