Making
When December comes around, my mind inevitably turns to Christmas and
the many traditions associated with this time of year. One of the earliest I recall is
the handmade Advent calendar my mom faithfully hung for me each December.
It had little pockets for each day of the month leading up to Christmas Eve,
which she filled with a chocolate or candy surprise.
Another favourite tradition in our house was attending the candlelight service
at church followed with a trip to my grandmother’s house. There, my father’s
very big family (at times, around 50 of us with grandkids and cousins) would
be wandering in and out, sharing gifts and laughter with one another. Being a
musical family on my mother’s side, our contingent would always arrive singing
Christmas carols.
Brampton is home to many cultures, each with their own holiday traditions.
Diwali, which just took place in November, is the festival of lights. It’s one of the
most important holidays in South Asian culture and is an official holiday in India.
The traditions involve the lighting of lamps, candles and even fireworks, which
represent the triumph of good over evil.
Here at The Rose we have begun some lovely holiday traditions as well. For
instance, each year we collect toys, food and money for Brampton families in
need through the Toys for Tots program. Staff, volunteers and patrons donate to
help make someone else’s holiday season a little brighter. Look for the bin in the
lobby.
Attending a live performance is one tradition that every culture enjoys. The
Nutcracker, for instance, with beautiful costumes and magical sets is a show that
every little ballerina must see. Then there is the classic, heart-warming Dickens’
tale, A Christmas Carol, which is told in new and wonderful ways every year. This
season we’ll present the spectacular Broadway musical version.
Whatever your own traditions may be, I hope you’ll make the theatre part of
your holiday plans. Whether you take your little ones to see The Nutcracker
for the first time or bundle up to come downtown for the free New Year’s Eve
celebrations, music and theatre are sure to make the season memorable for all.
Happy Holidays!
