Camping Association and its mission. 

The possibilities for adventure and limitless exploration abound throughout the entire landscape

another. In this age of stressed-out, overscheduled families, 

RVing is the perfect way for family members to stay in touch 

with each other. Nothing quite encourages communication and 

shared activity like an RV getaway. 

Having an RV gives you the ability to reconnect with your 

family without the logistical hassles – whenever the opportunity 

presents itself. On a whim, you can hop in an RV and spend a 

weekend with your kids after a hectic week of work. You can 

bond with your mate, make a connection with your teen and 

finally feel like a kid again.

“As a means of raising our kids as enlightened people, 

I can’t imagine a better way.” 

Brad and Amy Herzog’s love of RVing began shortly 

after Brad looked at Amy and asked, “How would you 

like to quit your job, let our apartment lease end and 

RV around the country for a year?” Much to his surprise, 

Amy agreed. 

The Herzogs spent 10 months on the road, exploring the 

big cities and small towns of 48 states. The trip inspired 

Brad’s first travel memoir, States of Mind, and ever since 

this first taste of RVing, the Herzogs have spent two 

months every summer out on the open road. 

When their family grew to include two sons, Luke and 

Jesse, their life on the road didn’t end. The boys, who are 

now ages 4 and 6, have been RVing since they were born.

Whether you are in the market for a new, used or rental RV for

Testing the waters 

Never owned an RV and thinking about buying one? Consider 

renting one and taking an extended “test drive” with your family 

and belongings. Travelers are finding it easier than ever to rent 

RVs year round, for a weekend, entire week or even longer. 

Renting allows you to try various types of RVs and learn from 

actual experience which one best suits your particular needs. 

Perhaps you already know and enjoy the RV lifestyle but 

aren’t ready to own. Many people rent RVs simply for the fun,

Pre-owned power 

If cost is critical, but you’re ready to buy, consider a pre-owned 

RV. Many RV dealers carry them, and many of the units have all 

the fancy features that new models have. 

Whether you’re looking for a towable RV or a motorized RV, 

you’ll likely pay one-third less for a pre-owned unit than a 

similarly equipped new unit. 

RV dealers may provide you with a pre-delivery inspection of the 

vehicle. Dealers place a high priority on selling well-maintained 

RVs. At a dealership, you can compare prices on various units 

with similar features. This will give you a better understanding of 

an RV’s market value. 

RV dealers can also offer you extra protection for your used RV 

purchase through extended service agreements. 


Making the leap 

When you are ready to invest in an RV – new or used, a trip to 

your local RV dealer is a good idea. Dealers can provide helpful 

advice, give you a first-hand look at the technology in today’s 

RVs and explain financing options tailored to your budget. 

Buying from a reputable dealer helps you build a relationship 

that lasts for as long as you own your RV. Dealers are more 

eager to service an RV that they actually sold; in fact, many 

times loyal customers’ needs are taken care of first. And, if you 

have questions about your RV, you can rely on a dealership 

that knows you and your RV to help. 

Another “must” is an actual usage demonstration and testdriving 

of several units from the dealership. This will give you 

the feel of what it will be like to operate the vehicle. 

Financing your dreams 

Whether it’s new or used, the question now is how can you 

make that dream of buying an RV a reality? 

The answer: Finance your purchase with terms that make it 

affordable for your budget. Most dealers have already arranged 

on-the-spot financing through one or more major lenders and 

will work to make your purchase dream come true. When you 

finance your purchase instead of liquidating assets or paying 

cash, you maintain your financial flexibility. 


• Down payments are lower – Although final terms are based 

on your credit profile and the age, type and cost of the RV 

being purchased, financing through RV lenders usually requires 

down payments in the 10 percent range. 

• Monthly payments are lower – Because RV finance specialists 

know the industry, it’s not uncommon to find 15-20 year 

repayment schedules to help you afford the RV of your dreams, 

resulting in manageable monthly payments. 

Plus, your RV may qualify for some of the same tax benefits as 

a second home or mortgage. Check with your tax advisor, but 

to qualify for these benefits, such as the deductibility of interest 

on the loan, the RV must be used as security for the loan along 

with providing basic living accommodations, such as having a 

sleeping area, bathroom and cooking facilities. 

Be sure, insure! 

If you are thinking of buying an RV, be sure to discuss 

specialized RV insurance with an RV-experienced agent or 

insurance company. An RV is a home on wheels. Specialized 

RV insurance is a unique blend of auto and homeowner’s 

insurance coverage, yet the price is typically comparable or less 

expensive than standard auto insurance. Protect yourself by 

properly insuring both your investment and RVing lifestyle

As our age increases, so, too, do our opportunities to experience 

all that RVing has to offer. Today’s seniors are zestfully on the 

go, and RVs can take them wherever their hearts desire. 

Thousands are part-time RV users, weekend and vacation 

travelers or seasonal “snowbirds.” Thousands more – some 

estimates go as high as a million – live full time in their RVs. 

Comforts of home 

Seniors find today’s RVs make travel and camping comfortable 

and extremely accommodating, even for those with physical
