Greetings from the Governor
It gives me great pleasure to offer my support to the Pennsylvania Recreation Vehicle and
Camping Association and its mission.
The possibilities for adventure and limitless exploration abound throughout the entire landscape
of our commonwealth. One of the best ways to view and experience the unique sites, history and
culture of Pennsylvania is from the comfort and convenience of recreational vehicles (RVs). As
you travel our scenic highways and byways, you will discover the qualities that make our state
such an enriching place to live and visit – the goodness of our people, the richness of our historical
significance and our geographic diversity. Given the commonwealth’s natural beauty and cultural
vibrancy, I am confident that you will create many lasting memories while traveling throughout
the commonwealth in your RV, and spending the night at one of our many campgrounds.
As Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I urge everyone who owns a recreational
vehicle to come explore and enjoy our “State of Independence.”
Discover RVing,
Discover the
World
Go camping. Go climbing. Go canoeing.
Go RVing. It’s a big country out there. And
in an RV, you can see and do it all.
You can visit a national park – or all of the national parks. See the
Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. Go skiing in the winter and fishing in
the summer. Visit 49 state capitals or 100 Civil War battle sites.
An RV has room for all your treasures and memorabilia picked up
along the way. It can also handle your favorite gear for any sport –
biking, golfing, rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing and more.
Help foster a love for the outdoors in your children. Reunite with
your family and put your to-do lists away. Turn off the cell phone
and finally play!
RVing allows you to experience America like never before. In an
RV, the great outdoors has never been closer. Whether your passion
is hiking, canoeing, attending festivals or camping with the kids,
RVing is a wonderfully fun and surprisingly affordable way to get
away from it all without leaving it all behind – that is unless you
want to.
So, what are you waiting for? Dive right in! The
road’s wide open and calling your name.
Family Vacations
Something happens when families spend time together. Bonds are built between the
generations. Secrets are shared. Discoveries are made. Sometimes the road to a
happy family is an actual road. And sometimes, nothing brings a family closer together
than taking them far away.
RVs can offer you and your family one miraculous getaway after
another. In this age of stressed-out, overscheduled families,
RVing is the perfect way for family members to stay in touch
with each other. Nothing quite encourages communication and
shared activity like an RV getaway.
Having an RV gives you the ability to reconnect with your
family without the logistical hassles – whenever the opportunity
presents itself. On a whim, you can hop in an RV and spend a
weekend with your kids after a hectic week of work. You can
bond with your mate, make a connection with your teen and
finally feel like a kid again.
RVing is nothing if not kid-friendly. Think of all the “extras”
sported by recreation vehicles. Comfortable beds. Showers. Your
children’s favorite toys, snacks, games, books and videos – all
within an arm’s reach. A clean bathroom that’s always nearby.
And because of these comforts, there are certain things you’ll be
able to do without: The sound of, “Are we there yet?” for instance.
And that’s all before the motor even stops. The nation’s 16,000
campgrounds catering to RV travelers feel like small, friendly
towns. Your children will find plenty of other children eager to
make friends. And in a safe environment, they’ll find amenities
and activities galore.
Here are some of the fun things
you can enjoy at a campground:
• Swimming pools
• Playgrounds
• Lakes with boat rentals
• Movie rentals
• Fishing ponds
• Game rooms
• Tennis courts
• Square dances
• Bike paths and rentals
• Hayrides
• Petting zoos
• Mini-golf
“As a means of raising our kids as enlightened people,
I can’t imagine a better way.”
Brad and Amy Herzog’s love of RVing began shortly
after Brad looked at Amy and asked, “How would you
like to quit your job, let our apartment lease end and
RV around the country for a year?” Much to his surprise,
Amy agreed.
The Herzogs spent 10 months on the road, exploring the
big cities and small towns of 48 states. The trip inspired
Brad’s first travel memoir, States of Mind, and ever since
this first taste of RVing, the Herzogs have spent two
months every summer out on the open road.
When their family grew to include two sons, Luke and
Jesse, their life on the road didn’t end. The boys, who are
now ages 4 and 6, have been RVing since they were born.
The experience for them is both fun and educational,
says Brad. “As a means of raising our kids as enlightened
people, I can’t imagine a better way.”
Amy says that RVing provides the perfect balance
between adventure and home. “Kids like routine,” she
says, pointing out that her boys can still enjoy their
favorite foods, toys and even their own beds while
traveling on the road.
And the flexibility is great, too, she adds. If the kids’
moods change, from happy to hungry or tired, there’s no
scramble to find a restaurant or hotel. All the comforts of
home are right in the RV.
“To me, the perfect vacation is when everyone’s relaxed and
having fun,” says Amy. And for the Herzogs – and thousands
of other families in the U.S. – RVing provides just that.

Recreation vehicles combine transportation and living
quarters for a multitude of leisure and outdoor activities.
Put simply: RVs let you follow your passions – wherever
they may take you.
Whether you are in the market for a new, used or rental RV for
weekend jaunts or yearlong journeys – there’s an RV sized and
priced just right for you.
Testing the waters
Never owned an RV and thinking about buying one? Consider
renting one and taking an extended “test drive” with your family
and belongings. Travelers are finding it easier than ever to rent
RVs year round, for a weekend, entire week or even longer.
Renting allows you to try various types of RVs and learn from
actual experience which one best suits your particular needs.
Perhaps you already know and enjoy the RV lifestyle but
aren’t ready to own. Many people rent RVs simply for the fun,
freedom and flexibility of taking RV trips to a special event
or destination.
Pre-owned power
If cost is critical, but you’re ready to buy, consider a pre-owned
RV. Many RV dealers carry them, and many of the units have all
the fancy features that new models have.
Whether you’re looking for a towable RV or a motorized RV,
you’ll likely pay one-third less for a pre-owned unit than a
similarly equipped new unit.
RV dealers may provide you with a pre-delivery inspection of the
vehicle. Dealers place a high priority on selling well-maintained
RVs. At a dealership, you can compare prices on various units
with similar features. This will give you a better understanding of
an RV’s market value.
RV dealers can also offer you extra protection for your used RV
purchase through extended service agreements.
Making the leap
When you are ready to invest in an RV – new or used, a trip to
your local RV dealer is a good idea. Dealers can provide helpful
advice, give you a first-hand look at the technology in today’s
RVs and explain financing options tailored to your budget.
Buying from a reputable dealer helps you build a relationship
that lasts for as long as you own your RV. Dealers are more
eager to service an RV that they actually sold; in fact, many
times loyal customers’ needs are taken care of first. And, if you
have questions about your RV, you can rely on a dealership
that knows you and your RV to help.
Another “must” is an actual usage demonstration and testdriving
of several units from the dealership. This will give you
the feel of what it will be like to operate the vehicle.
Financing your dreams
Whether it’s new or used, the question now is how can you
make that dream of buying an RV a reality?
The answer: Finance your purchase with terms that make it
affordable for your budget. Most dealers have already arranged
on-the-spot financing through one or more major lenders and
will work to make your purchase dream come true. When you
finance your purchase instead of liquidating assets or paying
cash, you maintain your financial flexibility.
12 • Explore Pennsylvania
• Down payments are lower – Although final terms are based
on your credit profile and the age, type and cost of the RV
being purchased, financing through RV lenders usually requires
down payments in the 10 percent range.
• Monthly payments are lower – Because RV finance specialists
know the industry, it’s not uncommon to find 15-20 year
repayment schedules to help you afford the RV of your dreams,
resulting in manageable monthly payments.
Plus, your RV may qualify for some of the same tax benefits as
a second home or mortgage. Check with your tax advisor, but
to qualify for these benefits, such as the deductibility of interest
on the loan, the RV must be used as security for the loan along
with providing basic living accommodations, such as having a
sleeping area, bathroom and cooking facilities.
Be sure, insure!
If you are thinking of buying an RV, be sure to discuss
specialized RV insurance with an RV-experienced agent or
insurance company. An RV is a home on wheels. Specialized
RV insurance is a unique blend of auto and homeowner’s
insurance coverage, yet the price is typically comparable or less
expensive than standard auto insurance. Protect yourself by
properly insuring both your investment and RVing lifestyle
with specialized RV insurance.
Fuel prices would
need to triple from their
current level to make RVing
more expensive for a family
of four than other forms
of travel.
14 • Explore Pennsylvania
Even with today’s higher fuel prices, RV travel is a great value. A
vacation cost comparison study by PKF Consulting shows that RV trips
remain the most affordable way for a family to travel because of the
significant savings on hotel and restaurant costs.
Here are some tips that will help you save money on
fuel while still enjoying all the fun, freedom and
flexibility that RVing has to offer.
Camp closer to home. With more than 16,000
campgrounds nationwide, RVers can enjoy the
outdoor experience whether they travel five miles
or 500 miles.
Stay longer in one place. Many RV parks are
vacation destinations in their own right, offering
pools, playgrounds, hiking trails, entertainment
centers, organized activities, convenience stores
and much more.
Cook your family favorites in the convenience of
an RV, to avoid the high costs of eating out.
Drive 55 instead of 65. You may even save yourself
the cost of a speeding ticket!
Good Times,
Great Value
Adjust home thermostats to save energy when
traveling.
Pack lighter and purchase firewood, water and
other camping materials at the campground
to keep the RV lightweight
while traveling.
Tune up the engine of your
motorhome or tow vehicle,
inflate tires properly and
conduct regular maintenance
to maximize fuel efficiency.
Use the grade of fuel recommended by
the engine manufacturer to increase miles
per gallon.
Travel at night when the weather is cooler and the
vehicle air conditioning is needed less.
Fuel is typically
only the fourth largest
expense on a road trip,
behind lodging, food and
vehicle payment and
maintenance.
Retire in Style
Follow the sun. For months
at a time. Savor travel’s
pleasures. Make new
friends, or connect with
old ones. Visit family.
As our age increases, so, too, do our opportunities to experience
all that RVing has to offer. Today’s seniors are zestfully on the
go, and RVs can take them wherever their hearts desire.
Thousands are part-time RV users, weekend and vacation
travelers or seasonal “snowbirds.” Thousands more – some
estimates go as high as a million – live full time in their RVs.
Comforts of home
Seniors find today’s RVs make travel and camping comfortable
and extremely accommodating, even for those with physical
restrictions. RV travelers enjoy home comforts like queen-sized
beds and central air and heat.
Many of these “condos-on-wheels” have slideout rooms that
expand their interior space by about one-third at the push
of a button. On-board closets and storage space eliminate
the need to pack, unpack and carry bulky suitcases. Fully
equipped kitchens help older RVers follow special diets and
vacation more economically by avoiding fast-food and
high-priced restaurants.
Cross-country friends
RV travel fosters a sense of community, offering mature
travelers a valuable network of friends that share common
interests. Especially popular among seniors are camping clubs,
which provide an active social network on the road. Camping
clubs hold annual conventions, regional rallies, campouts and
other events to bring RVers together.
“RVing allows seniors and retirees to see the country in style
while meeting new people and experiencing new things,”
says David Woodworth, RV historian. “Older adults have
everything they need in their RV to have a safe, comfortable
and stress-free getaway.”
An RV for everyone
While not everyone can backpack or tent-camp, anyone can
enjoy outdoor living at a campground with an RV. And with so
many RVs from which to choose, there are models available to
fit every lifestyle and interest. Many RV campgrounds offer
expanded facilities and a variety of activities such as golf,
tennis, tours and social events.
The relaxed RV lifestyle can help add years to your life –
and zest to those years. There are 3,679,182 square miles to
see in America. And there’s no better way to see them than
in an RV.
Luxury Suite
If you’ve recently attended an RV show, you are well aware that the RV life isn’t
what it used to be. For some, camping means “roughing it,” but the luxurious
accommodations of some of today’s RVs are putting that thinking to rest.
So are today’s hottest celebrities. While on set, actors find
that RVs provide a luxurious home away from home.
Professional athletes also find RVing to be an ideal way to
travel with family to tournaments, races and games
throughout the country.
Each year, new models sport improved designs and
equipment. Look for these fantastic features available on
today’s RVs:
• Kitchens with state-of-the-art appliances and
marble countertops
• Entertainment electronics galore, from plasma
TVs and satellite dishes to surround-sound stereos
• Computer, fax and Internet hookups
• Washer/dryers, dishwashers
• Beautiful bathrooms with spacious showers,
bathtubs and fine tilework
• Closed circuit camera for unobstructed rear vision
when backing up
• Security systems
© gorving.org
• Larger-than-ever “basements” and storage areas
• Push-button multiple slideout sections
• Self-retracting awnings
• Whirlpool baths
• Automatic setup features for folding camping trailers
• Thermostat heating and cooling
• LCD control panels that show at a glance the
condition of all “house” systems including electric,
propane and tank levels
• Hydraulic leveling that makes setting up camp a snap
Of course these kinds of luxuries come with a celebrity
price tag. A “fully loaded” RV can cost you anywhere
from $250,000 to well over a million dollars. But don’t
worry – if marble countertops and plasma TVs are out of
your price range, there is still a comfortable (and affordable!)
RV out there for you. For more information on the
types of RVs available, as well as their average cost, turn
Celebrity Scoop
Here’s what some celebrities
have to say about RVing:
“One of the reasons so many [NASCAR]
drivers are using RVs is that we’re not
always in places where you can stay in a nice
hotel. The RV is your home away from
home. It allows you to stay focused.”
Jeff Gordon, NASCAR driver,
commenting on The Travel Channel’s Dream RVs,
September 26, 2004
“There’s nothing not to like about it. The free-
dom of being able to pull up, stop, power up
anywhere you want – beach or whatever.
Set up and have your front yard different every
single day. Whatever you want it to be, and
to see the country that way – it’s awesome.”
Matthew McConaughey,
actor, commenting on The Ellen Show
“My husband and I have a little RV that we
travel around in. We enjoy [RVing]. We enjoy
the outdoors and we love to drive.”
Dolly Parton, country music legend,
commenting on CBS Late Show
with David Letterman, November 12, 2003
What is PRVCA?
The Pennsylvania Recreation Vehicle
represents the interests of recreation
vehicle dealers and manufacturers, as well
as the campgrounds that are ultimately their
destination. In addition, businesses and
suppliers that enhance and support this
industry fill out the ranks of this association
that has truly become one of the nation’s
most progressive and dynamic RV industry
organizations.
Experience the best of the mountains, lakes, cities and scenery
as you explore Western PA, which consists of the Laurel Highlands/
Be swept away by the awesome scenery of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon and
the 2,053 feet of Kinzua Bridge. In Pittsburgh, you’ll want to take in the
culture at the city’s theaters, museums and restaurants. The first
Public lands make up over one-third of this great country, and they
belong to each of us. From sidewalks outside our doors to beaches to
distant mountain streams, we share it all. And together, we can protect
it. Whether you’d like to organize a cleanup, be a campground host,
or do something else, there’s a way you can help. To fi nd out more
about the volunteer opportunities available, visit www.TakePride.gov.
It’s your land, lend a hand.
