2003 - the DHO

Annabel Brunner and Edward Perrott organised the East
Anglian event, a wine tasting in the Old Kitchens at Trinity
College, Cambridge. A member, Jeremy Fairbrother, the Bursar
at the college provided the venue, Alex Riley dispensed his
knowledge, a raffle of the cream of Guy Clayton's cellar was
held which helped bring the total for the evening to a
substantial £590.
When I asked Norman Freund to organise a raffle it seemed a
simple enough thing to do. Members, it appeared, were falling
over themselves to donate handsome prizes; you buy some
raffle books, do a little advertising, hey presto, you have a
raffle. The real world isn't like that. Raffles arc public events,
rather like general elections; they need scrutineers and be
authorised by public bodies. It took a lot of drive to organise
and anyone other than Norman would have rated the trauma
as a major life event. Needless to say, the raffle was a great
success and the magnificent sum of £2,445 was raised.

The total raised by the campaign was £74,566. It was possible
to fund the purchase of the Breithorn apartment for £130,000
by adding the Benson Browning Bursary and a significant
contribution from the Hepworth Trust. The Club will be
reassured to know that our present support for racing and
training can continue because of a generous donation from the
Walduck family to this Trust. We were extremely fortunate with
our timing; had we been in the market this year rather than last,
we would have needed an extra £15,000, due to sterling's
depreciation against the Swiss franc.
Through members generosity, the D.H.O have a property which
secures our place in Wengen. It provides comfortable
accommodation for the Wengen representative and as a summer
apartment for the use of members will broaden the Club's
service. The following is a complete list of the people whose
direct contribution totalled £55,080. It would be wrong to
specify individual sums, but as many appeals do, I have grouped
them with names in alphabetical order.
