2003 - the DHO

As anticipated in the 2002 Journal, a service to celebrate the
75th year of St Bernard's in Wengen was held on February 9th
2003. The service was conducted by D.H.O member Roger
Scoones, Rector of St Mary's Church Stockport. The Ven. Peter
Hawker, Archdeacon of Switzerland gave the sermon. The
Anglican Bishop of Gibraltcr, Geoffrey Rowlc, presided at Holy
Communion.
As the letter from William Wells shows, there is a gap to fill
after Coggins and there have been several requests for the club
to encourage snowboarding. The committee would like to
organise a Snowboarding Week with a leading teacher from
Wengen Ski School. If it were desired one or two days could be
spent on skis and informal race training. You can start learning
basic technique on a dry slope - you don't have to wait until,
you arrive in Wengen.

Most of the youngsters who got thoroughly soaked at the
Wycombe Summit Coggins Meetings in the past 3 years have
outgrown Coggins. I Iowcvcr, these were all very enjoyable
events and it is now down to boys, girls and parents whether
they continue.
Coggins age children would still be welcome and a fun race can
be organised. Also, provided numbers are advised quickly,
snowboarding lessons can be arranged. The planned date is
Sunday December i.e. the first Sunday after term ends. Please
contact the Hon Editor by mid October.
Dolores White, one of the organisers, has asked that the Journal
remind members that the 2003 LSC equipment and clothing
sale will be held on Saturday 8th November between 10am and
2pm.The profits go towards their racing and training costs.
Anyone with children from 'tinics' up to and including
teenagers knows the speed with which ski clothing has to be
replaced. If you get more than a couple of weeks wear you'll be
lucky. Last year, within five minutes of arriving, I sold a two
year old salopette and jacket outfit in good condition that my
son had outgrown for £60. The LSC took their 'cut' and with
the balance I bought a virtually brand new ski jacket and fleece.
So don't just throw things at the Oxfam shop, get yourself over
to Wycombe Summit ski slope on November 8th. It is 5 minutes
drive from J4 of the M40.
A new log cabin style restaurant has been put up between the
top of the Wixi Lift and the Lauberhorn Start Hut. It will be
open for the winter season, as well for some weeks during the
summer. There will be between thirty and forty seats, indoors
and outside. The restaurant replaces the old bar at the top of the
Wixi, which was established by the late Andreas Cova. Fittingly,
Andreas' widow, Ariane is a driving force behind the new
enterprise and, in addition to other food and drinks, will be
providing a daily soup dish prepared in a traditional cheese
kettle.
