<strong>Law</strong> School Raises<br />

Close to $6 Million in External<br />

Funding in FY 2003<br />

Banner year in external funding allows law school to<br />

continue commitment to excellence in legal education<br />

A donation from the law firm of Ballard Spahr will enhance the<br />

office of the <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Law</strong> Review. Above are <strong>Temple</strong> alumni from<br />

the class of 2003 currently at Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll.<br />

Many factors contributed to the boom year in external<br />

fundraising. According to Dean Robert J. Reinstein,<br />

“This year’s successful fundraising cannot be attributed<br />

to any one thing. The sources of that success—individual<br />

contributions, government support, research funding,<br />

the generosity of Philadelphia law firms—demonstrates<br />

the breadth of commitment of the community to <strong>Temple</strong><br />

<strong>Law</strong> School.”<br />

Sources of funding<br />

The law school’s continued growth and improvement<br />

will be fueled by the $6 million in external funds that<br />

came from the following sources:<br />

• 2,434 graduates and friends contributed<br />

to the <strong>Law</strong> School in FY 2003, with a<br />

record 337 contributing at least $1,000 and<br />

becoming members of the Russell<br />

Conwell Society.<br />

• The Annual Fund received contributions<br />

of $789,032.<br />

• $1,538,428 was contributed to the<br />

Endowment and Capital Funds. The<br />

income from these funds will be used to<br />

provide financial aid for students and<br />

faculty research support and to further<br />

institutionalize the Rule of <strong>Law</strong> Project in<br />

China.<br />

• Other restricted giving amounted to<br />

$513,284.<br />

• Government grants totaled $3,045,395.<br />

These grants supported the Rule of <strong>Law</strong><br />

Program in China, Professor Scott Burris’<br />

public health law initiatives and the <strong>Law</strong><br />

School public interest programs.<br />

Dean’s Forum Focuses on Role<br />

of In-House Counsel<br />

Rick Collier ’79 talks about career development<br />

Rick Collier, former senior vice<br />

president and general counsel of<br />

Pharmacia Corporation, was the featured<br />

speaker at the dean’s September<br />

invitational forum, attended by faculty,<br />

administrators, and students. For the past<br />

two years, Dean Robert J. Reinstein has<br />

hosted informal forums with<br />

distinguished visitors.<br />

Collier earned his undergraduate and<br />

law degrees at <strong>Temple</strong>. He used his own<br />

career history, which includes stints in<br />

private practice, government, and<br />

corporations, to illustrate the wide<br />

variety of career paths available to<br />

law graduates.<br />

At the dean’s forum, Collier noted, “Litigators are<br />

often models for aspiring lawyers because this is the<br />

dominant image of lawyering in popular culture.” He<br />

adds, however, that “there is a world of excellent<br />

opportunities in corporate practice which didn’t exist<br />

to the same extent when I began my career. In-house<br />

corporate jobs are not second-tier legal jobs, but are<br />

some of the most challenging and interesting positions<br />

available today.”<br />

Collier’s own career gives him a unique vantage<br />

point on the subject. In 2003, Collier became senior<br />

counsel in Morgan Lewis’ life sciences interdisciplinary<br />

Richard Collier ’79<br />

Alex Wellen did not appear to be an<br />

iconoclastic law student. He was an editor of the<br />

<strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Law</strong> Review and President of the Student<br />

Bar Association. Upon graduation, he worked for<br />

the New York law firm of Pennie & Edmunds.<br />

Then his career took an unusual turn. After two<br />

years in private practice he and a classmate, Luke<br />

Reiter, moved to the West Coast and produced the<br />

Emmy Award-winning cable show “Cybercrime.”<br />

Reiter departed to become a screen-writer for<br />

“The Practice,” and Wellen got serious and<br />

published his book about law school.<br />

Barman: Ping-Pong, Pathos & Passing the<br />

Bar is Alex Wellen’s memoir of the brief but<br />

painful period that is the transition from law<br />

student to practicing attorney. Unlike law school<br />

classics like John Jay Osborne’s The Paper Chase or<br />

Scott Turow’s One L, which explored the Ivy League<br />

experience, Wellen’s memoir focuses on his<br />

experience coming out of <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Law</strong> School.<br />

Wellen loved <strong>Temple</strong> and—even in retrospect—<br />

would not have gone elsewhere. “Barman is a book<br />

about the law school experience for those of<br />

us who didn’t go to Harvard—which is almost<br />

everyone,” said Wellen during a talk with <strong>Temple</strong><br />

<strong>Law</strong> students and faculty. Wellen’s October 16 visit<br />

was a stop on a speaking tour to promote Barman,<br />

which hit the bookstores with much fanfare in<br />

early October.<br />

In his introduction of Wellen, Dean Robert J.<br />

Reinstein remembers an after-class conversation:<br />

“Alex said he wanted to ask a personal question:<br />

‘Were the ’60s really as good as they say?’ When I<br />

replied they were, he said he wished he’d been there.<br />

So when Barman came out I knew there’d be a lot<br />

of sex in it.”<br />

If studying for the bar exam seems like an<br />

unpropitious setting for a lot of sex, picture a<br />

review session in which the protagonist and his<br />

girlfriend, Molly, quiz one another with striptease<br />

consequences, one of many witty scenes in this<br />

roman a clef. Anyone who hears Alex Wellen<br />

do a deadpan reading of his breakup with his<br />

girlfriend/bar study companion from Barman will<br />

<strong>ES</strong>Q. SPOTLIGHT<br />

group after leaving Pharmacia. During his<br />

time at Pharmacia, Collier oversaw the<br />

company’s landmark merger with Pfizer,<br />

which was the largest merger of 2002.<br />

Collier has also been senior vice<br />

president and general counsel at<br />

Pharmacia & Upjohn. Before that, he<br />

held the same position at Rhone-Poulenc<br />

Rorer, Inc. (now Aventis), where he<br />

had worked his way up from assistant<br />

counsel.<br />

Yet Collier began his career in<br />

government. While in law school, he was<br />

an intern at the Department of Justice,<br />

where he worked on a major antitrust suit<br />

against five companies, including Pfizer. When he<br />

graduated, he started at the FTC within the Bureau of<br />

Competition, which focused on illegal trade practices<br />

and merger reviews within the drug and medical devices<br />

industry. He then moved into litigation, working on<br />

antitrust and commercial disputes at Fox Rothschild.<br />

There he met Murray Shusterman ’36 and worked with<br />

Abe Reich ’74, both members of the law school Board<br />

of Visitors.<br />

Although Collier had success as a litigator, was wellcompensated,<br />

and worked with good colleagues, he felt<br />

“some dissatisfaction,” especially with respect to worklife<br />

balance issues. He began to think that he didn’t want<br />

have no trouble believing Wellen’s claim that he did<br />

stand-up comedy one summer during law school.<br />

His fictionalized girlfriend, who in the book attends<br />

Columbia <strong>Law</strong> School, may be the only one not<br />

laughing. Annoyingly, she breezes through the<br />

bar exam and job hunt due to her “tier one”<br />

connections. Described as perfect in all ways but<br />

one, the author wryly notes, “Molly was mean.”<br />

During the couple’s inevitable breakup, she asks<br />

to be reimbursed financially for the year she wasted<br />

on a deadend relationship.<br />

In Barman, the insecurities engendered by the<br />

four-tier rating system are ultimately overcome by<br />

the ambitious and imaginative hero, who creates a<br />

“wall of pain” on which he posts a stream of<br />

rejections from New York firms. The protagonist<br />

eventually lands a coveted position practicing<br />

intellectual property law at Nickel and Reed in<br />

New York.<br />

voice from the ‘second tier’—the vast group of<br />

perfectly wonderful yet underappreciated law<br />

schools, whose students are the Barmen doing most<br />

of the actual legal work in our country. Funny,<br />

honest, touching Barman shows us the life that<br />

most lawyers really live.”<br />

to spend his entire career doing “adversarial work which<br />

is primarily retrospective in nature.” So he left private<br />

practice for the corporate world.<br />

One of Collier’s most satisfying experiences as<br />

corporate counsel was serving on the management team<br />

that transformed the merger between Pharmacia and<br />

Upjohn from perceived failure to industry success story.<br />

Another has been managing the legal elements of the<br />

merger-acquisition of Pharmacia by Pfizer, even though<br />

Collier was essentially “working himself out of a job.”<br />

Collier noted that over the past two decades there<br />

has been a “quiet revolution in how legal matters are<br />

handled in the corporate world.” Under the old<br />

paradigm, a corporate officer without formal training<br />

would handle legal matters in consultation with outside<br />

counsel. However, as the business environment changed<br />

and legal issues grew in scope and complexity,<br />

corporations found it increasingly cost-effective to have<br />

lawyers on staff.<br />

The role of in-house counsel has also changed over<br />

time, Collier says. Previously, “in-house lawyers acted<br />

as coordinators, relying heavily upon outside counsel<br />

for most transactions.” But the increased cost of legal<br />

services encouraged corporations to handle more<br />

transactional work in-house. Consequently, corporate<br />

law departments witnessed a dramatic increase in<br />

personnel and budget. In-house lawyers offer the<br />

corporation competitive advantage by doing the work<br />

“better, cheaper, and quicker” than outside counsel,<br />

who may need more time to come up to speed on<br />

the company’s operations and products, as well as<br />

industry practices.<br />

“Most companies do not, however, handle litigation<br />

in-house because of the costly infrastructure needed,”<br />

Collier notes. For aspiring litigators, private practice is<br />

still the best choice. But corporate work offers other<br />

advantages, including, Collier says, work-life balance<br />

and no concerns about continually developing a client<br />

base. In addition, corporations may have more flexibility<br />

to allow employees to sample other practice areas or<br />

work in different geographical locations. Corporate<br />

lawyers also have potential opportunities for non-legal<br />

work in business development, training, compliance<br />

and communications.<br />

The downside, Collier says, is that corporations<br />

undergo mergers and acquisitions, which presents a<br />

risk that positions will be downsized or eliminated.<br />

He also feels that law firms provide superior training<br />

in “client responsiveness.” Collier encouraged law<br />

students to consider what they want out of their<br />

careers and to explore options that they may not<br />

have previously considered.<br />

THE CONSTANCE W. MAIER<br />

MEMORIAL AWARD FUND<br />

The Brehon <strong>Law</strong> Society of Philadelphia has<br />

created an endowment in memory of one of its<br />

founding members, Constance Wombaugh Maier<br />

’88. The Constance W. Maier Memorial Award<br />

will be given annually to a student who shows<br />

excellence in trusts and estates.<br />

Following Maier’s untimely death in May 2002,<br />

her friends and associates, notably Judge Sandra<br />

Mazer Moss ’75 and Judge Pamela Pryor Dembe<br />

’77 joined together with the law school to honor<br />

her memory. The Brehon <strong>Law</strong> Society reached out<br />

to its membership and the community to raise the<br />

funds to create this endowment.<br />

Maier attended law school and began practicing<br />

law when she was 49 years old, after raising four<br />

children. Her husband, Common Pleas Court Judge<br />

Eugene Maier ’71 commented, “She took care of<br />

the rest of us first, and then she took care of her<br />

own dreams.” From the late 80s until leaving her<br />

job in 1999 because of her illness, she served as<br />

general counsel to the Philadelphia Parking<br />

Authority, where she is credited with streamlining<br />

legal procedures. Before graduating law school she<br />

Gifts Support High School Mock Trial Program<br />

The Beasley Firm and alums Gwen ’86 and Andy Stern ’86<br />

pledge gifts to <strong>Temple</strong>-LEAP program<br />

Two new gifts from The Beasley Firm and Andrew J.<br />

Stern ’86 and Gwen Roseman Stern ’86 will go to<br />

strengthen <strong>Temple</strong>’s <strong>Law</strong>, Education and Participation<br />

(<strong>Temple</strong>-LEAP) mock trial program for local high<br />

school students.<br />

Now in its 25th year, the Pennsylvania Bar<br />

Association statewide mock trial competition features<br />

from 45 to 50 teams from the Philadelphia area. The<br />

competition of public, private, charter and Archdiocese<br />

school teams requires a massive coordination of<br />

volunteers. This year, attorneys from The Beasley Firm<br />

will join members of the Young <strong>Law</strong>yers Division of the<br />

Philadelphia Bar Association and many other volunteers<br />

from the legal community who coach the teams and act<br />

as judges in the competition.<br />

The Beasley Firm’s generous gift will ensure that all<br />

high schools in Philadelphia and the region that wish to<br />

participate in the program will not be denied access<br />

because they can’t afford the entry fees. The donation<br />

will also fund special training for all interested teams at<br />

Gwen ’86 and Andy Stern ’86<br />

the mock trial “training camp” held at <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

NATIONAL INNS OF COURT<br />

The Honorable Lowell A. Reed Jr. ’58 was a recipient<br />

of an award for professionalism from the American<br />

Inns of Court on October 11, 2003. The A. Sherman<br />

Christensen Award was presented to Judge Reed at<br />

the U.S. Supreme Court by Emmet J. Bondurant.<br />

Named in memory of the founder of the first<br />

American Inn of Court, the A. Sherman Christensen<br />

Award is given to a member who has provided<br />

“distinguished, exceptional, and significant<br />

leadership to the American Inns of Court movement.”<br />

2003 ANNUAL SAMUEL POLSKY MOOT COURT COMPETITION<br />

The 2003 annual Samuel Polsky Moot Court Competition on September 17<br />

was presided over by Hon. Jan E. Dubois, Hon. James T. Giles and Hon.<br />

Michael A. Della Vecchia ’71. The competition’s champion was Timothy<br />

extracurricular activities such as mock trial will keep<br />

students motivated to stay in school and improve their<br />

chances of going to college and on to higher education.”<br />

Both Sterns have a love of trial advocacy which began<br />

when they were students—and teammates on the mock<br />

trial team—at <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Law</strong>. Andy and Mitchell S.<br />

Goldberg ’86 were the founding members of the now<br />

nationally renowned <strong>Temple</strong> Trial Team. Andy Stern is a<br />

trial lawyer and partner at The Beasley Firm and Gwen<br />

recently left White Williams to become more active in<br />

<strong>Temple</strong> LEAP, joining fellow alumnae Karen Forman ’85<br />

and Roberta West ’89 in that office. Gwen, who has been<br />

an adjunct of trial advocacy at <strong>Temple</strong> since 1997, plans<br />

to introduce reenactments of historic cases into the mock<br />

trial training camp. This year, she and the other judges<br />

and lawyers at the camp will recreate the famous<br />

Lindbergh kidnapping case.<br />

“I was mentored and trained by some outstanding trial<br />

lawyers and want to share my trial experiences with<br />

Philadelphia area high school students,” says Gwen, who<br />

has been involved with LEAP since law school, and is<br />

herself a product of the Philadelphia public schools.<br />

“With the help of my fellow trial lawyer colleagues, I’m<br />

sure that the Philadelphia area kids will soar to the top of<br />

the state and hopefully the national competition.”<br />

“Our goal is to challenge and motivate high school<br />

students in an academic environment. Mock trial uses so<br />

many intellectual skills,” says Karen Forman, <strong>Temple</strong><br />

<strong>Law</strong>’s director of public interest programs. “We have<br />

seen kids who haven’t found their real area of strength or<br />

focus, watched them go<br />

through the mock trial<br />

program and suddenly<br />

blossom and become serious<br />

academic achievers. Some<br />

kids work harder on this than<br />

they have on anything, and it<br />

really drives the rest of their<br />

academics because they have<br />

a new sense of success.”<br />

STUDENT ARTICL<strong>ES</strong> WIN AWARDS<br />

Kim Bartman ’03 was awarded the Ruth Bader Ginsburg<br />

Pursuit of Justice Legal Writing Competition Award sponsored by<br />

the Philadelphia Bar Association. Bartman’s paper, entitled “Not<br />

Exactly What Congress Intended: The Supreme Court Restricts the<br />

Scope of the ADA,” was written under the supervision of Professor<br />

Barry McCarthy and will be published in the Philadelphia Bar<br />

Association journal. The $2000 prize was presented by Justice<br />

Ginsburg at the 2003 Philadelphia Bar Association luncheon.<br />

A fourth-year evening student, Annmarie Bridy, won second<br />

place in the competition for a paper written under the supervision<br />

of Professor Scott Burris. Bridy’s article has been accepted for<br />

publication in the Journal of <strong>Law</strong>, Medicine and Ethics.<br />

David Jones ’03 is the winner of the 2003 Pacific Legal<br />

Foundation writing competition for a guided research paper he<br />

wrote with the supervision of Professor Mark Anderson. Jones’<br />

paper was chosen over 40 other entries from law students across<br />

the country.<br />

Elias Cohen recently published two articles: “Assuring<br />

Safety in Long Term Care: The Albatross of Historical<br />

Experience” in Ethics, <strong>Law</strong> and Aging Review; and<br />

“The Elderly and the Quest for Autonomy” (with K.B.<br />

Wilson) in Aging Today. Cohen was also the recipient<br />

of the Center for Advocacy of the Rights and Interests<br />

of the Elderly’s 25th Anniversary Award and was the<br />

featured speaker at the Scripps Gerontology Center<br />

conference in Columbus, Ohio.<br />

TEMPLE LAW ALUM TURNS<br />

100 IN FLORIDA<br />

Judge Anne E’del Deacon<br />

was one of four women<br />

in class of 1940<br />

Anne E’del Deacon celebrated her 100th<br />

birthday on October 3, 2003 at the St. Mary’s<br />

assisted living facility in West Palm Beach.<br />

Although Judge Deacon earned her law degree in<br />

1940, it was not until 1955, at the age of 52, that<br />

she began to practice law. After passing the bar in<br />

Florida, she decided to take flying lessons on a<br />

whim, and ended up marrying her instructor. With<br />

the second world war then underway, she joined<br />

the Navy and rose to second-highest<br />

commissioned officer in the seventh naval district<br />

in Miami.<br />

Deacon used the GI Bill to attend art school,<br />

and it wasn’t until after a divorce that she decided<br />

to use her legal education and open a law office..<br />

She is thought to be the first woman to open a<br />

solo practice in Lantana County, where she<br />

specialized in family law until she was appointed<br />

the first female municipal judge in Palm Beach<br />

County, and Florida’s fourth female judge ever. In<br />

1966 Deacon retired from the bench and returned<br />

to her practice until 1988.<br />

Marc S. Raspanti, a founding member<br />

of Miller, Alfano & Raspanti, gave a<br />

presentation entitled “Qui Tam <strong>Law</strong>suits<br />

and the False Claims Act, a Case Study<br />

Session” at the Fraud and Compliance<br />

Forum, sponsored by the American<br />

Health <strong>Law</strong>yers Association and the<br />

Health Care Compliance Association. Raspanti’s<br />

practice focuses on white-collar criminal litigation,<br />

affirmative civil litigation under the state and federal<br />

False Claims Act, and complex civil and criminal<br />

The U.S. Justice Department named George<br />

Stamboulidis to monitor Merrill Lynch’s compliance<br />

with reforms it implemented to avoid prosecution tied<br />

to Enron Corp.’s collapse. Stamboulidis is a partner at<br />

Baker & Hostetler in New York specializing in whitecollar<br />

and corporate criminal matters, and heads the<br />

firm’s New York litigation practice. He is a former chief<br />

of the Long Island division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office<br />

for the Eastern District of New York.<br />

1986<br />

Larry Atkins writes, “I am a member of the American<br />

Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA), and I just<br />

wrote a chapter on op-eds and essays for the ASJA<br />

Guide to Freelance Writing (St. Martin’s Press). I have<br />

written over 175 op-eds, articles, and essays for major<br />

publications across the county.”<br />

Peter A. Martin has joined Barnes<br />

& Thornburg as a partner in the<br />

Washington, D.C. office, where he is a<br />

member of the international practice<br />

Peter J. Schankowitz is the president of Vin Di Bona<br />

Productions in Los Angeles, which produces ABC’s<br />

‘Save Your Ass,’ a comedic survival show, and ‘The<br />

Hill,’ a look at the lives of young D.C. legislative aides.”<br />

Stephen J. Britt has become of counsel to the<br />

Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, firm of Donnelly and<br />

Associates, where he is responsible for immigration<br />

litigation, employment discrimination, and health<br />

care fraud.<br />

Mary K. Kennedy writes, “I am a staff attorney with<br />

Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania concentrating<br />

my practice in the areas of child custody and landlordtenant<br />

issues. I also volunteer for the courts in Salem<br />

County, New Jersey, as a member of the Child<br />

Placement Review Board.”<br />

Gregory H. Melick is general counsel for Smart Media<br />

of Delaware, which was recently awarded $212 million<br />

for breach of contract and fraud in a suit concerning<br />

development and marketing of a bar code scanner and<br />

monitor that affixes to grocery cart handles.<br />

Margaret Gallagher Thompson has been named chair<br />

of Cozen O’Connor’s trusts and estates practice.<br />

Thompson concentrates her practice in tax and estate<br />

planning for individuals, charitable organizations, and<br />

family-owned businesses. Prior to joining Cozen<br />

O’Connor Thompson was a partner at Schnader,<br />

Harrison, Segal & Lewis where she served as chair<br />

of its trusts and estates practice.<br />

Beth Stern Fleming, a shareholder at Stevens & Lee<br />

and co-chair of its bankruptcy/workout department,<br />

presented “Equipment Leasing” as part of the<br />

Commercial Document Series sponsored by the<br />

AT LAW SCHOOL<br />

Isadore Shrager died October 26, 2003<br />

at Saunders House in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania.<br />

A law school scholarship has been established to<br />

honor the 91-year-old law school alumnus, who<br />

also served as a trustee of <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Shrager was a senior partner of Fox Rothschild<br />

LLP. Long active in politics and civic affairs, he<br />

served at various times as a West Philadelphia<br />

ward leader, lawyer for the Democratic City<br />

Committee, Fairmount Park commissioner,<br />

director of the Board of City Trusts, solicitor for<br />

the Register of Wills, and delegate to several<br />

Democratic national conventions.<br />

In addition to his commitment to <strong>Temple</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> and the law school, Shrager was<br />

president of Akiba Hebrew Academy, chairman<br />

of the board of Wills Eye Hospital, member and<br />

secretary of the board of directors of Community<br />

College of Philadelphia, and trustee of Har Zion<br />

<strong>Temple</strong> in Penn Valley.<br />

Edwin W. Slade Jr., DMD, FCLM, was recently<br />

reelected to represent District II on the board of trustees<br />

Mark E. Pelosky, a former Peace Corps volunteer in<br />

Togo, West Africa, is now The Immigrants’ Attorney,<br />

with multiple offices in Massachusetts providing<br />

immigration, international, business and general law<br />

services in French, Spanish, Portuguese and English.<br />

Before establishing his practice in Massachusetts,<br />

Pelosky provided legal services to the U.N. in<br />

Cambodia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo and<br />

Montenegro, and worked for private business clients<br />

in the Middle East.

Teresa N. Cavenagh ’85<br />

Teresa N. Cavenagh,<br />

who graduated from<br />

<strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Law</strong> School’s<br />

evening division in 1985,<br />

is the new <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Law</strong><br />

Alumni Association<br />

President. Cavenagh<br />

describes herself as a<br />

longtime <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Law</strong><br />

booster. From 2001 to<br />

2003, Cavenagh served<br />

as TLAA vice-president;<br />

before that she was a<br />

member-at-large on the<br />

executive committee.<br />

Cavenagh traces her<br />

interest in the TLAA to<br />

her final year at the law<br />

school, when she received a full-tuition,<br />

year-long scholarship. “That scholarship<br />

came at a very good point in time for me and<br />

ever since I have been very committed to<br />

giving something back to <strong>Temple</strong>,” she says.<br />

Cavenagh came to law through library<br />

science. After graduating from Villanova<br />

<strong>University</strong> in 1973, she received an MS in<br />

Library Science from Drexel <strong>University</strong> in<br />

1976. Duane Morris hired her as the firm’s<br />

first full-time law librarian, a position she<br />

held until 1984. In 1981, while continuing to<br />

work full-time at Duane Morris, she entered<br />

law school.<br />

When Cavenagh completed her J.D. in<br />

1985, Duane Morris offered her a position<br />

as an associate. She made partner in 1995.<br />

Although Cavenagh has spent her entire<br />

career at the firm, she says she’s not unique.<br />

“We have a number of people here that we<br />

call ‘lifers,’ ” she jokes. Nevertheless, she has<br />

litigated in a number of areas. She started<br />

out working on criminal cases and later<br />

moved into civil practice, but she continues<br />

to represent clients in securities fraud and<br />

RICO cases. Her success in a large case<br />

representing a hotel owner led her to<br />

represent other hotel owners and chains,<br />

especially against employment discrimination<br />

and public accommodation claims.<br />

For Cavenagh, service to <strong>Temple</strong> is<br />

an abiding passion. In addition to her<br />

involvement with the TLAA, Cavenagh<br />

taught legal writing and research in the law<br />

school’s evening division for twelve years.<br />

Chad T. Wishchuk and his wife Bethany announce the<br />

birth of their first child, Ella Marie, on June 10, 2003.<br />

Wishchuk concentrates his practice in employment and<br />

labor law at the construction law firm of Marks & Golia<br />

Thaqal S. Al-Ajmi has received a Ph.D.<br />

in international law from the <strong>University</strong><br />

of Wales in Aberystwyth.<br />

1999<br />

David M. Perry was on the faculty at<br />

Sterling Education Services’ seminar,<br />

“Intellectual Property Issues Facing Businesses in<br />

Delaware” on September 18, 2003. Perry is an associate<br />

in the intellectual property and technology practice<br />

group in Blank Rome’s Philadelphia office.<br />

2001<br />

David Butler Ritchie has been promoted from assistant<br />

professor to associate professor of law at the<br />

Appalachian School of <strong>Law</strong> in Grundy, Virginia.<br />

2003<br />

Paul J. Cosgrove has joined the Cincinnati, Ohio office<br />

of Ulmer & Berne as an associate in its pharmaceutical,<br />

medical device and tort litigation group.<br />

The additional demands<br />

on her time as TLAA<br />

president and a recent<br />

stroke have forced her to<br />

put aside teaching for<br />

now. However, Cavenagh<br />

is optimistic about a<br />

full recovery.<br />

Cavenagh has several<br />

goals for her TLAA<br />

presidency, chief among<br />

them to grow the organization’s<br />

membership.<br />

“Membership dues<br />

support alumni programs and allow us to<br />

make contributions to the law school. More<br />

members mean more programs and more<br />

support for the school.”<br />

One of the most important programs<br />

sponsored by the TLAA is <strong>Law</strong> Day. The<br />

event introduces third-year law students to<br />

judges and members of the bar; it is held at<br />

City Hall or the federal courthouse. “The<br />

point of the program is to help prospective<br />

grads network and increase their employment<br />

opportunities,” Cavenagh says. A couple of<br />

months before <strong>Law</strong> Day, alumni volunteers<br />

go to the law school to discuss networking<br />

with students so that they can make the most<br />

of the experience.<br />

In early November, the TLAA will<br />

sponsor a swearing-in ceremony for recent<br />

graduates who have passed the bar.<br />

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Russell<br />

Nigro and judges from the Court of Common<br />

Pleas will preside over the ceremony, which<br />

will be held at City Hall.<br />

Cavenagh is confident about the future of<br />

the TLAA. She notes that the recent graduate<br />

division is very active and contributes much<br />

enthusiasm and energy. Recent graduates are<br />

among those serving with Cavenagh on the<br />

executive committee board. The other TLAA<br />

Executive Committee officers are Vice<br />

Hans Corell, Under Secretary-General for Legal Affairs<br />

and Legal Counsel, United Nations<br />

As U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan’s senior legal adviser,<br />

His Excellency Hans Corell oversaw ratification of the treaty<br />

creating the International Criminal Court, helped draft<br />

Afghanistan’s peace accord and spearheaded the effort to create an<br />

international war crimes tribunal for Cambodia. Corell also served<br />

as ambassador and undersecretary for legal and consular affairs in<br />

the Swedish foreign ministry from 1984 to 1994.<br />

Anne-Marie Slaughter, Dean, Woodrow Wilson School,<br />

Princeton <strong>University</strong>; President, American Society of<br />

International <strong>Law</strong><br />

Dean Anne-Marie Slaughter’s teaching and research have<br />

focused on global governance, the politics of international<br />

tribunals, and interdisciplinary analyses of international legal<br />

issues. She has written or coedited four books and more than 50<br />

articles for scholarly and legal journals. In addition to her scholarly<br />

work, she is a frequent commentator in the media on such topics as<br />

international tribunals, terrorism and international law, including<br />

issues related to the aftermath of September 11. Slaughter is a<br />

fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member<br />

of the Council on Foreign Relations, a trustee of the World Peace<br />

Foundation, and a member of the editorial or advisory boards of six<br />

academic and legal journals.<br />

Ziba Mir-Husseni, Visiting Professor, New York <strong>University</strong><br />

School of <strong>Law</strong><br />

Professor Mir-Husseni, who is Iranian, holds an honorary<br />

research position at Cambridge <strong>University</strong>, U.K., and also<br />

works freelance as a filmmaker, researcher and consultant. An<br />

anthropologist by training, her interests are in law, religion, and<br />

gender. She is the author of two books on Islamic law and culture<br />

and specializes in current debates in Iranian family law among<br />

fundamentalist traditionalists, western liberal critics, and reformers<br />

who seek to modernize Islamic law while retaining its core values<br />

and commitments. She is also the writer and co-director of the<br />

highly-regarded documentary, Divorce Iranian Style, which was<br />

filmed in Teheran.<br />

Launches 2003-2004 Lecture Series<br />

International jurist Patricia Wald<br />

addresses standing-room-only crowd<br />

The Honorable Patricia Wald was the first of a host of eminent<br />

speakers coming to the law school under the auspices of the<br />

Institute for International <strong>Law</strong> and Public Policy in the academic<br />

year of 2003-2004. On September 25, Judge Wald’s lecture, “The<br />

Making of International <strong>Law</strong>,” was delivered to a capacity crowd<br />

in the Duane Morris LLP Moot Court Room. In addition to the<br />

public lecture, Wald led a faculty discussion on “An Insider’s View<br />

of International Courts” and addressed a group on “The Role of<br />

International <strong>Law</strong> in U.S. Courts.”<br />

Wald, a former judge for the International Criminal Tribunal for<br />

the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and former Chief Judge of the U.S.<br />

Court of Appeals for D.C., is currently chair of the Open Society<br />

Justice Initiative. Before serving on the bench, she was Assistant<br />

Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice’s office of<br />

legislative affairs.<br />

Itsuo Sonobe, retired Justice, Supreme Court<br />

of Japan<br />

Justice Itsuo Sonobe, who visited the law school<br />

in October, 2003 as part of the IILP’s Distinguished<br />

Scholar-in-Residence program, served on the<br />

Supreme Court of Japan from 1989 to 1999. In<br />

addition to his career in the judiciary, Justice Sonobe<br />

has held academic posts at Tsukba <strong>University</strong>, Seikei<br />

<strong>University</strong>, and Ritsumeikan <strong>University</strong>, where he is<br />

currently a visiting professor of law. He is also<br />

special counselor for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,<br />

charged with instituting an administrative oversight<br />

system for Japanese diplomats.<br />

<strong>Temple</strong> ranked third among first-time<br />

test takers in Pennsylvania, trailing<br />

only slightly behind Penn State<br />

Dickinson (86.96%) and <strong>University</strong><br />

of Pennsylvania (86.67%). Statewide,<br />

78% of test takers were successful.<br />

This is the fifth consecutive year in<br />

which the bar pass rate for <strong>Temple</strong><br />

<strong>Law</strong> graduates increased.<br />

The Seaport Museum at Penn’s Landing on the Delaware River was the<br />

setting for the Class of 1978’s thirty-fifth reunion. The class raised an<br />
