Michael “Bully” Herbig / Germany 2001 / 81 min / 35 mm, 1:1.85 / Colour
Apache Chief Abahachi (Michael “Bully” Herbig) and Ranger (Christian Tramitz) have been blood-brothers
ever since Ranger saved the Chief’s life at an unguarded railroad crossing. The trouble starts when Abahachi
borrows money from the Shoshone tribe to set up a prairie pub for the Apaches. He gets taken by
Santa Maria (Sky Dumont), an evil trickster posing as a real-estate agent. To make matters worse, Santa
Maria makes off with the gold and shoots the Shoshone chief’s son. Abahachi and Ranger return with
the corpse to Shoshone chief Sly Slug, who blames them for his son’s death, the stolen gold and, worst
of all, the murder of his pet rabbit. They are to die at dawn, but manage to escape. Abahachi remembers
that his grandfather gave him a map to a fabulous treasure at a place called Manitou’s Shoe. Unfortunately,
Abahachi cut the map into four pieces and gave them to friends. Pursued by the Shoshones and
stealthily followed by Santa Maria, the Chief and Ranger head off to find the map pieces. This takes them
to Abahachi’s flamingly gay twin brother Winnetouch (Herbig), to Abahachi’s Greek friend Dimitri, and to
the lusciously built Uschi, the love of Abahachi’s life, who now has her eye on Ranger…
After making his highly successful first feature ERKAN & STEFAN, radio and TV comic “Bully” Herbig quickly
got the money together for this Western spoof. It turned into the summer blockbuster of 2001, copping
the “biggest opening weekend ever for a German production”, as Variety reported. In the words of director,
producer, co-writer and star Herbig, MANITOU’S SHOE is “a social, critical, auteur, Western road comedy
musical Dogma thriller drama with horses – and thus a film for girls.”
Michael “Bully” Herbig was born in Munich in 1968 and trained as a photographer. In 1992, he created the character “Bully” in a
daily morning show on Munich’s Radio GONG and continued the show on Radio Energy from 1994-1996. He developed into one of the
most prolific comedy writers, with credits on such shows as “Die Bayern Cops”, “Die Männer von Isar 3” and “Bullys Late Night Show”. He has
written, directed, co-produced and appeared in three seasons of the ProSieben comedy sketch show “Die Bullyparade”, which was nominated
for a Montreux Rose this year. In 1998, Herbig set up his own sound studio herbX Tonstudio and released a CD entitled “Bully –
Feines Fressi!”. His first feature film was ERKAN & STEFAN (THE BUNNYGUARDS, 1999).
