Whether unintentionally or attempting to make themselves appear bigger, better or smarter, it seems that some needle anything they perceive as ‘different’ – glasses, hair colour, complexion, shape etc. It is useful to acquire the skill of turning the other cheek (or at least turning away) early in life - after all, another’s words usually say so much more about them than anyone else... But, it doesn’t stop when we leave school. Currently, the court-case between the Chelsea/England and QPR footballers with the alleged ‘racially aggravated public order offence’ is hot news. How sad that grown men both passionate about and skilled in sport, are discussing lives that should be kept private and words that need not be spoken. Not least because, being successful sportsmen, in the public eye and looked up to by many, they should be positive examples to younger generations. The attempted justifications of ‘sarcasm’, ‘response to taunting’ and ‘you can’t control your emotions’ surely don’t stand up. Yet, little is new. Beginning a sermon based on part of the letter from Jesus’ brother, James, the preacher held up a sack saying, ‘In here is the most dangerous weapon in the world,’ and pulled out a great big machete which he swung above his head. Mentioning some of the terrible things people have done with knives, he said, ‘but a knife is not the most dangerous thing’ and put it down. He produced a pistol from the bag, pointed it at the ceiling and fired. Five hundred worshippers (this was America!) jumped into the air as one! He talked about terrible things some people have done with guns, before putting it down, saying, ‘a gun is not the most dangerous thing.’ Finally, he took a (cow’s) tongue from the sack. Fresh from the butcher, it was disgusting, repulsive, hideous. As he showed the folk in the pews, many felt nauseous and uncomfortable; several looked away. ‘This my friends,‘ he said, ‘is the most dangerous thing in the world.’ All too frequently we hear of terrible things being done with knives or guns; thankfully few of us will have direct experience. But, hands up, anyone who hasn’t been hurt by the words of another. And, hands up, too, anyone who hasn’t let their own tongue cause harm. We can apologise and be forgiven, but our mouths do not have a backspace key; scars remain. Relationships that have taken years to build can all too easily be damaged by a few unguarded words. ‘Sticks and stones…’ may be good advice; but perhaps wiser still, for sports and ‘ordinary’ folk alike, is ‘If you wouldn’t write it and sign it, don’t say it.‘ Or ‘If writers wrote as carelessly as some people talk, then adhasdh asdglevyt[bn ]pasdlghhasd fasd f!’ ‚ Claire Salzmann, Reader, Camel-Allen Cluster of Churches St. Teath Parish Church This year for our Harvest Festival we will be having a Barn Dance on Saturday 13th October to raise funds to support our harvest donation to charity. It will be held in the church hall at 7.30 pm and the cost will be £5 person. Light refreshments will be served and there will be a bar where wine and cider will bo on sale. Tickets will be available in September from Yvonne, telephone 850497. The harvest festival service will be held at 11 am in church and will be taken by Rev. Jem Thorold.
