DAVE'S GARDENING DIARY for AUGUST & SEPTEMBER During August, all attention in the garden should be directed towards producing wonderful examples of fruit , vegetables, and flowers, ready and perfect for the Village Show. That is what the organisers think. Of course, in the real world, and especially in conditions such as we are suffering now, things are slightly different. 7 The incessant rain, the cold weather, and dark, cloudy conditions, not to mention the invasion of our gardens by Super Slug means that we shall all be hard pushed to produce anything decent. Even houseplants are suffering this year, but we know that gardeners are wily and resourceful, and we are sure that you all have your contingency plans and you will amaze us, as you always do, with the outstanding produce you bring along for our Show. And, of course, all this dreadful weather means more time spent indoors, and do please remember that there is a good selection of craft classes. So, if you would rather wrestle with knitting, than knot weed, start plying those needles, and show us what you can do. As always, keep dead heading, and weeding, and remove any diseased matter at once, and burn it. Take time to look at your plot and see what you can do if similar weather conditions prevail next year, and maybe start to make a few alterations, maybe in your choice of plants, and where and how they are planted. And just think, we don't have to spent hours watering vulnerable plants in pots. After the Show, it will be time to start planting bulbs for the Spring - save the tulips for later, but other Spring flowering bulbs can go in in September. Don't plant them too deeply. If you want flowers for indoors, read the information on the bulb packets etc. to make sure that you have the right quality. If you are planting in a bowl with drainage holes, you can use ordinary potting compost, but if you choose a bowl or container with no drainage, do use a special bulb fibre. Always choose good, heavy bulbs. After planti ng the bulbs, water them, and allow them to drain, then put them in a cool, dark place, and remember to check them from time to time. TEATH ARTS FESTIVAL St Teath held its first ever Arts Festival in the Church on 25 th , 26 th and 27 th May, which raised over £1300 for Church funds. Artists from all over the county responded to our invitations sent out in January and came forward with an amazing display of painting, sculpture and crafts and, after much midnight oil, tearing of hair and frantic begging and borrowing of display equipment our beautiful and ancient place of worship did duty as a temporary art gallery for the three days, while the Church Hall hosted a fine selection of craft work, a tombola and refreshments. Over 30 artists and sculptors exhibited more than 100 works in the Church where the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming, thanks to the many people who gave their time to steward and conduct sales, while visitors who sought refreshment in the Hall were able to watch demonstrations of the many and VILLAGE LUNCH varied skills represented there, including computerised lace design, various forms of embroidery, wood WEDS 5 turning and knitting. th SEPTEMBER Roast ham with parsley sauce. On the Saturday evening we were treated to a very polished performance by our own Choir and the Mini -Minstrels, which was much appreciated and very well attended. The artists were happy with the outcome, the venue and their sales and the Committee was pleased to pat itself on the back for having produced a very successful event, so much so that it has been decided to stage it every two years, the next one being May 23 rd , 24 th , 25 th 2014 (Spring Bank Holiday).
