August/September 2012 EDITORIAL Issue No 238
Over 20 years ago, a group of people gathered in the newly converted Community Centre to discuss the
vexed problem, "should we have a village newsletter?"
This was not a popular proposition, as many villagers pointed out that we already had the Parish
Magazine, which provided information about local events.
However, after a frank and open debate, and after we had promised
the Vicar a dedicated slot in the new paper, it was agreed that the
Parish magazine would be dropped, and a new local paper would be
formed. There were several volunteers, and the man steering the
whole enterprise, the late ROY CROSLEY was wholeheartedly behind
this venture, even supplying our name for us - The Timepiece - as
the new committee felt the Clock Tower should feature in a local
publication. By the way, he also gave you the two editors you are still
saddled with! We had no choice - ROY stood up and said," Right,
the editors will be ANNE and JANE", and over the years we have felt
very privileged to be part of this thriving little paper. We still find it
hard to realise what a long time ago it all was - the days of typing all
copy, then one of us had an electric typewriter - oh! this was really
getting technical! Sometimes we recall our battles with the early
computers, and can't believe how lucky we are, in having first DENNIS
and now JULIAN to guide us through the complexities of computing.
Without JULIAN'S desk top skills, there would be no Timepieces
coming through your letter boxes each month.
Of course, we are grateful that we have such an excellent support team backing us, and without the help
and support from you, the Public, we could not function. Over the years, we have held an annual fund
raising event " Beachcomber", where people brought in weird and wonderful, or beautiful and strange
objects which they had found while walking on the beach. This was part of a big Coffee Morning, and
raised much needed funds for printing etc. Sadly, over the years, this event became less popular, even
though we included objects found on a country walk. We realised it was the same people entering their
"finds" each year, so, this year, we have abandoned Beachcomber, but as paper and printing costs
continue to rise, we need to find more funds, so we are going to hold a Big Timepiece Coffee Morning,
with cake and produce stall, books, bric-a -brac etc. Of course, there will be a raffle. This will be on
Saturday, October 20th.starting at 10a.m. We do hope that you will come along and support us.
Now, we would like to say a very big "Thank You". to the St. Teath Lunch Ladies for their very generous
donation to Timepiece. Thank you ladies, it has been much appreciated.
It seems that we are not going to see much sunshine and warmth this year, but we hope that you will all
feel a happy "glow" when you walk around the Church, enjoying the beautiful sights and scents of the
Flower Festival, and then join in the celebrations of the Carnival. Of course, if you enter the Village
Show this year, and win an award, you can feel doubly happy at beating the odds. It will be much better
next year. The Timepiece team wish you all a very Happy Holiday!

A Reader writes
‘Sticks and stones…. may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.’
The old playground chant may be good advice – sometimes children’s comments cause an ‘ouch’
response. Whether unintentionally or attempting to make themselves appear bigger, better or
smarter, it seems that some needle anything they perceive as ‘different’ – glasses, hair colour,
complexion, shape etc. It is useful to acquire the skill of turning the other cheek (or at least turning away) early in
life - after all, another’s words usually say so much more about them than anyone else...
But, it doesn’t stop when we leave school. Currently, the court-case between the Chelsea/England and QPR
footballers with the alleged ‘racially aggravated public order offence’ is hot news. How sad that grown men both
passionate about and skilled in sport, are discussing lives that should be kept private and words that need not be
spoken. Not least because, being successful sportsmen, in the public eye and looked up to by many, they should
be positive examples to younger generations. The attempted justifications of ‘sarcasm’, ‘response to taunting’ and
‘you can’t control your emotions’ surely don’t stand up.
Yet, little is new. Beginning a sermon based on part of the letter from Jesus’ brother, James, the preacher held up
a sack saying, ‘In here is the most dangerous weapon in the world,’ and pulled out a great big machete which he
swung above his head. Mentioning some of the terrible things people have done with knives, he said, ‘but a knife
is not the most dangerous thing’ and put it down. He produced a pistol from the bag, pointed it at the ceiling and
fired. Five hundred worshippers (this was America!) jumped into the air as one! He talked about terrible things
some people have done with guns, before putting it down, saying, ‘a gun is not the most dangerous thing.’ Finally,
he took a (cow’s) tongue from the sack. Fresh from the butcher, it was disgusting, repulsive, hideous. As he
showed the folk in the pews, many felt nauseous and uncomfortable; several looked away. ‘This my friends,‘ he
said, ‘is the most dangerous thing in the world.’
All too frequently we hear of terrible things being done with knives or guns; thankfully few of us will have direct
experience. But, hands up, anyone who hasn’t been hurt by the words of another. And, hands up, too, anyone
who hasn’t let their own tongue cause harm. We can apologise and be forgiven, but our mouths do not have a
backspace key; scars remain. Relationships that have taken years to build can all too easily be damaged by a few
unguarded words. ‘Sticks and stones…’ may be good advice; but perhaps wiser still, for sports and ‘ordinary’ folk
alike, is ‘If you wouldn’t write it and sign it, don’t say it.‘ Or ‘If writers wrote as carelessly as some people talk,
then adhasdh asdglevyt[bn ]pasdlghhasd fasd f!’ ‚
FROM THE METHODIST MINISTER
When this article is published the
Olympic Games will be underway at all the
various venues which are being used for
the programme of individual and team
events. All of the years, months and weeks
of detailed preparation and planning will
truly be put to the test. One thing we can all do is pray
that the whole period of competition both for the
Olympic Games and Paralympic Games will pass off
without any problems associated with political activity.
The purpose of the Games is to promote friendship and
celebrate human endeavour through participation in
sport.
Over the past weeks the stories of what is involved
for those ‘elite’ athletes have been shared with us
through T.V. programmes and newspaper stories. For
some of the athletes these are weeks of disappointment
as they have learnt that they are not included in their
nation’s team because they have not achieved the
qualifying times. For some the time margins have been
really small such as seven hundredths of a second for
one swimmer, and a tenth of a second for a hurdler. It
seems incredible to me that we can measure time down
to such finite levels, with the technology that is available
to us.
As we watch the television coverage of the Games
we will be marvelling at the performances of the
individuals and teams as they participate in the
competitions. Our focus too often is I think on who is
winning the medals. For every medal winner there are
many who have achieved the honour of qualifying to
take part.
As I was thinking about all of this my mind went to
the apostle Paul, the greatest of the letter writers in the
New Testament of our Bibles who reminded those to
whom his letters were written that in fact we are all
involved in the ‘race of life’ or I could say the ‘race for
life’ as he tried to encourage them in their human living
using the figures of speech from the athletes world of
that time. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews used
the same example when he talked about ‘running with
determination the race that lies before us’ (see Hebrews
12:1) as the people of God. Paul writing to his friends
at Philippi – ordinary folk like you and I reminded them
that in the ‘race of life’ there is a prize for all of us and
we jog or stagger along together. In Philippians 3 and
verse 14 we read ‘I run straight towards the goal in
order to win the prize, which is God’s call through Christ
Jesus to the life above’. A prize which is more valuable
in the long term than an Olympic Gold Medal.
Every blessing in your pondering during the Olympics.
No meeting in August, and please note
that our September meeting on Tuesday
4th. will start earlier than usual to allow us to hold
an A.G.M. before the speaker. So, please be in
the Centre ready for 7p.m.start. Thank you. If
anyone would like to join us on the Committee etc.,
please let us know. Our speaker that evening will
be Mrs. LORRAINE TURNBULL who will be telling
us how we can nurture our "Apples and
Pears". We also have to pay our membership fees
that evening. They are £5.00 per person. If you
see a programme advertised that you would like
to hear, but are not a member, just come along,
you will be very welcome, and if you decide that
you would like to join, fine, but you are welcome
to join us on odd occasions if there is a talk you
would like to hear.
We know that many of you are bitterly disappointed
that this dreadful weather has ruined so
much of your hard work, but we know that
gardeners are resourceful people, and we are sure
that you will find something to put before the
Judges on August 18th. Please don't let us
down. There must be something that all this rain is
good for - apart from rice, that is!
DAVE'S GARDENING DIARY for AUGUST & SEPTEMBER
During August, all attention in the garden should be directed towards producing
wonderful examples of fruit , vegetables, and flowers, ready and perfect for the Village
Show. That is what the organisers think. Of course, in the real world, and especially in
conditions such as we are suffering now, things are slightly different.
7
The incessant rain, the cold weather, and dark, cloudy conditions, not to mention the invasion of our
gardens by Super Slug means that we shall all be hard pushed to produce anything decent. Even
houseplants are suffering this year, but we know that gardeners are wily and resourceful, and we are
sure that you all have your contingency plans and you will amaze us, as you always do, with the
outstanding produce you bring along for our Show. And, of course, all this dreadful weather means more
time spent indoors, and do please remember that there is a good selection of craft classes. So, if you
would rather wrestle with knitting, than knot weed, start plying those needles, and show us what you can
do.
As always, keep dead heading, and weeding, and remove any diseased matter at once, and burn
it. Take time to look at your plot and see what you can do if similar weather conditions prevail next year,
and maybe start to make a few alterations, maybe in your choice of plants, and where and how they are
planted. And just think, we don't have to spent hours watering vulnerable plants in pots.
After the Show, it will be time to start planting bulbs for the Spring - save the tulips for later, but other
Spring flowering bulbs can go in in September. Don't plant them too deeply. If you want flowers for
indoors, read the information on the bulb packets etc. to make sure that you have the right quality. If you
are planting in a bowl with drainage holes, you can use ordinary potting compost, but if you choose a
bowl or container with no drainage, do use a special bulb fibre. Always choose good, heavy bulbs. After
planti ng the bulbs, water them, and allow them to drain, then put them in a cool, dark place, and
remember to check them from time to time.
Good luck with the Show - remember, DAVID will be very pleased to help. If you need him, give him a
call 01208 850650
ST. TEATH ARTS FESTIVAL
St Teath held its first ever Arts Festival in the Church on 25 th , 26 th and 27 th May, which raised over £1300
for Church funds. Artists from all over the county responded to our invitations sent out in January and
came forward with an amazing display of painting, sculpture and crafts and, after much midnight oil, tearing
of hair and frantic begging and borrowing of display equipment our beautiful and ancient place of
worship did duty as a temporary art gallery for the three days, while the Church Hall hosted a fine selection
of craft work, a tombola and refreshments.
Over 30 artists and sculptors exhibited more than 100 works in the Church where the atmosphere was
friendly and welcoming, thanks to the many people who gave their time to steward and conduct sales,
while visitors who sought refreshment in the Hall
were able to watch demonstrations of the many and
Elegantly dressed in what she informed us was in fact a vintage dressing gown,
our speaker for the July meeting, Annie Wrigley, gave us an intriguing account of her
career. Leaving school in 1953 Annie had been apprenticed to a tailoress in a highclass
women’s outfitters for three years on a wage of 30/- a week (£1.50 in new
money). During this time she had learnt to hand-sew every kind of garment and when she left there at 18
she was able to open her own business making mostly wedding outfits for Jewish weddings. From there
Annie moved on to interior design in the big city of Manchester There followed an unconventional career
ranging from running a Tea shop in the UK to making curtains in California. Annie then showed us a
selection of interesting items of vintage clothing from the 50s, 60s and 70s, which have now become
very popular among the younger generation. Several members admitted that they were still wearing
clothes from this era and were delighted to think they were now the height of fashion.
After a welcome cup of tea and some of Heather’s delicious homemade biscuits, President Barbara,
ably assisted by members of the Committee, listed a large number of future events, including a Cream
Tea at Yvonne’s on July 22 nd the proceeds from which would be shared between the Church and our WI
– since many of our members worked tirelessly at all other charity Cream Teas throughout the year.
There would be a WI Pound Stall at the Carnival and WI Ladies would provide Lunches for the Judges
as usual at the Village Show on August 18 th . We would also be organising the Tre-Pol-Pen quiz on Sept
COMMEMORATING THE QUEEN’S JUBILEE 2012
Elaine and the members of the Jubilee Celebration Committee would like to say a huge
thank-you to everyone who contributed in any way to St Teath’s Jubilee festivities. We
were overwhelmed by villagers’ generosity and their willingness to help. At the Concert
we could not have asked for more dedicated performers or a more appreciative audience
and the Street Party was a wonderful example of St Teath’s community spirit in action.
By popular demand we shall be putting on a repeat performance of the Concert in the Church Hall at
7.30pm on FRIDAY 5 th OCTOBER. Seating is limited and tickets can be booked by ringing Anne on
01208 850522 after Monday 17 th September. Please note that you cannot be guaranteed a seat if you
turn up on the evening without a ticket. DVDs of the last concert will be available to buy from 1 st August
at St Teath Post Office at £3 each.
Thanks to the hard work of our fundraisers and the generosity of the people of St Teath we have a
healthy surplus after all expenses have been paid. We, as a Committee, have therefore thought hard
and long about the best way to use this money for the benefit of the whole village to create a lasting
legacy for future generations. Our proposal is that a large Delabole slate feature stone be put in place at
each end of the village with ST TEATH in large letters followed by the words: In commemoration of
Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee 2012. We should be very interested to hear everyone’s views on
this. Please email Timepiece or leave your message in the Timepiece box in the Post office. Thank you!

PLEASE HELP ELAINE FELL
RAISE £1000 FOR CHARITY
Me and my best mate Debs together with Ruby her little terrier-cross are going to walk the entire
Cornwall Coast Path during September – all 273 miles of it! We are by no means the fittest of people
and it will be quite a challenge for us. To give us the incentive to keep on walking we want to raise as
much money as possible for our chosen charities:
The reason why…
THE STROKE ASSOCIATION, CANCER RESEARCH, and
THE BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION
Over the past two years I have lost two very close friends - Jayne Stark, who you all know, died so
young and so very suddenly of a brain haemorrhage and
Nigel Grace, (Paul’s best friend), aged just 49 who lost his life in a very tragic accident. My dad has
also recently been very seriously ill with Cancer, but thankfully he is now in the early stages of
remission.
So in memory of my two dear friends, and to thank all the hospital staff who are helping my dad I have
decided to try and raise £1000 for the above charities.
A website has been set up on the ‘just giving’ site if people would like to help us achieve our goal. You
can choose which charity you would like to donate to or alternatively you can donate to ELAINE directly
if you are not able to go on line or would prefer not to.
www.justgiving.com/teams/2madbirdsandadog
(There is also a sponsorship form in the White Hart Pub, if you would prefer to sponsor me this way)
Thank you for taking the time to read this request.
UPDATE FROM ST TEATH KEEP FIT CLASS
Since my last article in the June 2012 edition, I am pleased to report that there
has been more interest in the Keep Fit Class and three new people have come
along, experienced the class and decided to join us. It would be fantastic if
even more of you were able to do the same. The classes vary from week to
week – starting with a warm up to increase the heart rate and stretch various
muscles, moving onto a mixture of leg strengthening work, stomachs, pilates
moves, circuit training, bone strengthening moves, upper body strengthening
and followed by a cool down of stretches and/or Tai Chi. There is something for everyone’s keep fit &
wellbeing.
Our situation remains that unless 11 people commit to the class by paying up front at the beginning of
each term, then the uncertainty of incoming finances means that we will not be able to continue in September.
Currently there are 13 of us who attend (5 of whom commit each term) but unfortunately either
due to illnesses, work commitments or other, we rarely seem to have the full quota at each session. We
would love to see the number of attendees increase in order to keep the class going.
On writing this, we have three more sessions left for this term in July, (we meet on Thursday mornings at
9.30am – 10.30am in the St. Teath village hall) however I appreciate that you won’t actually get to read
the article until August, by which time we will have broken up for the “summer” holidays. I would therefore
like to appeal to anyone who would definitely be interested in joining the class starting in September
to contact me, in order that I may collect numbers. If enough people can commit, then the class could be
given the lifeline we have been looking for. Please call me, Rachel Caddy on 07770 788186, I look forward
to hearing from you.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
With reference to last month’s letter regarding Church Hall bookings, the following background information
may be of interest.
The people of St Teath did indeed make significant contributions towards the refurbishment of the Hall
especially in the early stages. Some £5,000 was raised at the time and had it not been for the sterling
efforts of the village then it is doubtful whether the project would have got off the ground. However the
vast majority of the £175,000 required came from sources outside the village: mostly grants plus a loan
from NCDC. In addition there were some very generous donations from sympathetic benefactors.
As some of the grant-funding agencies were anxious to include wider input into the running of the hall, a
new Management Committee with members nominated from hall users was appointed to run the day-today
affairs, instead of the Parochial Church Council as before. Hence it is often referred to these days as
the Village Hall although it remains the property of the Church.
In recognition of the tremendous support the people of St Teath had given to the refurbishment project ,
it was established from the outset that wherever possible concessions would be made to local people
and village groups. One such benefit was that tables and chairs would be supplied free of charge for
village events and a very reasonable charge of 50p per chair and £1 per table would only be levied in
cases of private hire. In respect of the Jubilee Celebrations this was clearly a village event and if tables
and chairs were available they should have been willingly provided. Unless there has been a recent
change of policy by the Committee, whoever decided otherwise was acting without authority and although
they no doubt felt they had good cause and reason they might perhaps wish to reconsider this
decision. Incidentally no new tables were purchased as part of the refurbishment. Existing tables were in
good condition and some additional ones were donated by the Community Centre. The new chairs were
bought by the Pirate Trust, a charitable arm of Cornwall’s pirate FM radio station.
As regards a charge for the Hall itself people should be aware that a reservation prevents anyone else
from using it so charges are valid even if people subsequently do not use the venue. In practice though,
unless revenue has been lost, charges would normally be waived if the hall were not used. In the case of
the Jubilee celebrations it seems doubtful that anyone else would have wanted the hall at the same time
so again I would hope the Committee might wish to rethink the matter in the interests of good community
relations.
KEN MUTCH Ex Treasurer, St Teath Church Hall
Pre School, Stay and Play and Baby Groups
As we approach the end of another very successful pre-school year, we would like to say a big
thank you to all those who have supported us so well – parents, friends, and the community. The
help they give is much appreciated.
We are saying goodbye at the end of term to ten of our children who are all moving on to St Teath
Primary School. They have been making visits to the school over the past few months and have already
become familiar with the new environment. We send best wishes for a happy move to ‘big
school’ to Alfie, Andrew, Blu, Kayleigh, Kiya, Lea, Paige, Ruby, Rosie and William.
We have had visits this term from the RNLI , the Police, and a Lollipop Lady, giving the children an
opportunity to learn about the role these people play and how they help us. One of the highlights
was sitting in the police car, turning on the flashing lights and sirens, and trying out handcuffs for
size!
Sadly, our Mini Olympics sports day fell victim to the weather, but we did manage a visit to the
Aquarium in Newquay where a good time was had by all.
You can see examples of the children’s creative work in the village over the summer at the Carnival,
the Flower Festival and the Village Show.
ring Sarah on 01208 851548.

CHURCH HALL or VILLAGE HALL?
For decades it has been a matter of dispute amongst villagers, particularly the indigenous population,
whether the large, rather unlovely, but absolutely essential community building facing the entrance to the
Parish Church should be called the Church Hall or perhaps more accurately the Village Hall? People on both
sides have very strongly held views and believe fervently that the building’s history proves them to be right.
Well-known for its tendency to charge headlong into territory where wiser folk would fear to tread, TIMEPIECE
has, probably recklessly, decided to try to resolve this issue once and for all.
It is widely accepted that the Church/Village Hall was the brainchild of Rev Claude Kingdon who was the
charismatic Priest-in-Charge at St Teath from 1917 to1923. However
there are conflicting views about how the land on which the Hall stands
was acquired and where the money used to finance the project came
from. As a seeker after the truth, TIMEPIECE has been on the case and
has unearthed the following information, taken from original, authentic
documents written at the time.
Parish Magazine Dec 1919:’ Wanted – a Church Hall – We all
acknowledge that this is an absolute necessity in this village. We have no
room at all suitable, or large enough, for teas, concerts, lantern lectures
etc, the small Church Room being totally inadequate. I am very anxious to
carry out a plan for the erection of a permanent hall with dressing rooms,
copper, fittings etc at a total cost of about £500. I propose that the hall be
erected on the plot of garden ground adjoining the church to the south, for
which leave is being asked from the Lord Bishop who is patron of
the living of St Teath.’
Since the Bishop’s permission was sought to use the land, it is clear
that this was glebe land, ie. it already belonged to the Church.
In 1922 Rev Kingdon bought the disused Bible Christian Chapel (which stood on the site occupied until
recently by St Teath Garage) and tried to purchase land next to it with the intention of extending the Chapel
and making this into a Church Hall. However the owners would not sell the land, so he then went to Plan B
and had the Chapel pulled down in order that the slates, stone and wood could be used to build a new Church
Hall.
Parish Magazine Feb 1923: ‘In 1920 I bought the glebe land and I then also bought the Bible Christian
Chapel at a total cost of £200 and I am prepared to give the cost of the site and the materials of the chapel to
the Church Hall Fund as a thank-offering to God for six very happy years’ residence at St Teath.’
The cost of building the hall turned out to be about £1,300 and these funds were raised by Fetes held on
the Vicarage Lawn, Concerts and by donations. Rev Kingdon himself, gave three further donations of £100
each. He had by now been transferred to the Parish of Whitstone and was due to leave St Teath in June that
year. The month before Church Hall Opening Day there was still a debt of £456 to be cleared and Rev
Kingdon made an impassioned plea, ‘Anything short of this sum will fall on me, as I have guaranteed to
collect this amount and I shall have to pay any deficit myself’’, he declared, adding ‘And I don’t want to do this!
I throw myself on your generosity!’
When the Hall opened on May 16 th 1923 newspaper reports confirm Rev Kingdon’s very generous
contributions to the project. There was still a debt of £200 to be paid and since no further mention of it is made
in subsequent Church accounts, one can only assume that, despite his desperate pleas, the poor man himself
had to foot the bill. So there it is.
DELABOLE BRANCH OF THE BRITISH LEGION
How fortunate we were to have such lovely weather to hold our Cream Tea Event at Pencarey, St
Teath. We are very grateful to Mr & Mrs Tew for allowing us to hold the fundraiser in their home and
garden and to all those who helped set up the gazebos for our use.
Trading was brisk at the cake, BL goods, Tombola and Raffle stalls and the Cream Teas proved
very popular. The St Teath Society of Model Engineers were kept very busy with three of their engines
and wagons in use throughout the afternoon. An added attraction this year was the Crowning of the St
Teath Carnival Royalty.
Many thanks to all who donated items for the stalls and teas, to all who helped on the day, to those
who ran the train-rides and to everyone who attended. The wonderful total of £672.00 was raised. We
are very grateful to everyone in St Teath who supported us so well. Thank you all!
PARISH COUNCIL REPORT
13
Some good news at last. The Enforcement Officer has started work throughout the Parish. Even
better news is the fact that Cornwall Council has agreed to our request for parking restrictions in
Delabole along High Street and around the junction at Pengelly. Alternative parking arrangements have
been made for cars no longer able to park at the roadside when the new double yellow lines come into
force. Parking restrictions around the High Street/Pengelly junction will be enforced at all times, making it
a safer to enter and exit Pengelly. Thanks must go to the four Parish Councillors, two Cornwall
Councillors and two officers who tramped around the village on a cold, damp January morning looking at
the problems and discussing the solutions. It is entirely due to their efforts that something is at last
going to be done about the awful parking problems here in Delabole.
Good news too is the fact that Constable Laurie O’Toole is now thoroughly fed up with the
deplorable behaviour of some of the children in our Parish. He will be taking action against any child
found to be indulging in acts of vandalism or anti social behaviour. Do you know what your children
are up to? Better find out before the police do!
A quick appeal. There are several overgrown hedges around the parish. They pose a safety
hazard to people walking along the pavement, especially the partially sighted and small children. Please
take a look at your hedge and trim it back if it over hangs the path. What about your neighbour? Is
their hedge overgrown? Maybe they are elderly, disabled or too frail to cut their own hedge. Why not be
a good neighbour and offer to trim it for them?
And finally.
From the Parish Council Minute of April 11 th , 1896.
‘Resolve that the board (Local Government) be asked for information relative to the Poll re. The Lighting
and Watching Act demanded at the Parish Meeting’. (held on Saturday, March 26 th 1896 at St Teath at
7pm)
Subsequently, lights were installed and paid for by public subscription. But it did not quite go to plan!
Minute June 6 th 1896. ‘Mr R Parsons, Assist. Overseer, reported that he had collected £13.2s.8d for the
lighting. Farmers almost en mass refused to pay. Mr Parsons handed in his resignation stating that his
duties will terminate on September 29 th next. The meeting resolved that the street lamps be taken down
and housed’.
Minute September 12 th 1896. Moved by Mr R Pearce and seconded by Mr Teague, that the Parish
Council, excluding Messrs. Keat and Williams, be formed into a lighting committee and adding Messrs.
Knight, Mutton and Smith to meet the ratepayers and solicit the subscriptions.
If at first you don’t succeed!!
WIND TURBINES IN OUR AREA
Have you noticed that there is an increase of wind turbines in our area and throughout the county?
Are you aware that more are being considered, in pre-planning and planning applications? Others have
been approved by Cornwall Council and will no doubt soon be erected.
I was certainly taken by surprise when a flyer was dropped through my door notifying me of an application
for one in the West Downs area of the village which is located in close proximity to the Cornwall
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Heritage Coast.
Together with others from the village, surrounding villages and hamlets, I attended the recent St
Teath Parish Council Meeting where those who wished could speak of their support or objection to the
application. Following this the Parish Council discussed their response and forwarded their decision to
Cornwall Council.
I am aware of the need to explore alternative ways to source energy to preserve the planet and
believe that we should all be looking at ways to help. Wind Turbines are a part of this but should they be
erected at the expense of intrusion into the beautiful landscape which we enjoy and which is a very important
attraction to encourage tourists to the county? At what stage will enough be enough?
A group of concerned parishioners have met together to form the Allen Valley Community Action
Group . if you would like to be part of this or would like to know more then please do not hesitate to contact
me.
ST TEATH SCHOOL REPORT
14
The children and staff have had a lovely end to the term despite the weather. Pupils had the opportunity
to take part in Capoeira dance workshops at school where they were able to learn some of the key moves.
St Teath and St Breward schools came together for a joint Sports Day on Monday 25 th June. This was a
great success and the weather was kind to us. We were proud of the attitude of all the children taking part.
They all demonstrated the Olympic values and showed great team spirit.
Jack Proctor has organised a whole range of sporting activities for the children to take part in this term in
preparation for the Olympics. The children have had the opportunity to take part in a football tournament and
many Athletic / Olympic events. Well done to all the children who took part in these events. Thank-you to Jack
for all his hard work and enthusiasm. Pupils and staff in Class 3 have continued with their weekly surfing
lessons and are making really good progress. On Friday 13 th July the whole of St Teath school will be going
on a visit to the beach where they will be developing a range of outdoor skills.
Our visitors from Uganda finally made it to Cornwall this month. Thank-you to everybody for making
them feel so welcome. They were fortunate enough to experience a range of activities including surfing, guitar
lessons and a visit to the theatre. They thoroughly enjoyed their visit.
The Auction of Promises arranged by the parents and friends association at St Teath and the PTA at
St. Breward was a huge success. A profit of £2700 was raised to be shared equally between the two schools.
Fantastic! Well done to everybody involved and thank you for all your hard work.
We received the year six SATs results this week. The children did extremely well with 100% achieving
level four and above. The pupils worked very hard and we are extremely proud of them. There will be a
leavers assembly on Thursday 19 th July at 9:15. This will be an opportunity to say goodbye to our year six
pupils and to wish them well for the future.
We have to say goodbye to David Bray this term. He has been working at St Teath for two years now,
initially as a teaching assistant and recently as a trainee teacher. He has secured a full time teaching post for
September. We would like to thank David for all his hard work in the school and wish him all the best in his
future career.
On a final note I would like to say a huge thank-you to all of the children, staff, parents, governors and
local community for their support during my time at St Teath. St Teath is a lovely school in a beautiful village
and it has been a privilege to work at St Teath Community Primary School.
I would like to welcome back Mr Bacchus who will be returning to his post as Head Teacher of St Teath
and St Breward in September. We wish him all the best.
Fun Club
JO-ANNE CALLOW (Head Teacher Jan – July 2012)
Now well into its fourth year, our Fun Club for 7 – 11s is firmly established, well resourced, financially
viable, and regularly attended by 15 – 20 children on Fridays during term time.
As the end of the Fun Club year approaches, Grace and Bob have had to consider their future as leaders
/ organisers. Ill health has meant that Bob has had to relinquish a number of activities. Grace also
has a full load of responsibilities and involvement in the village.
For these reasons they have decided that, after nearly four years, it is time to withdraw and hand over
MOOR HARMONY
Well, what a wet June! Our Bodmin Hospital fete sing-out was held in the tea tent to an appreciative but damp
audience and we were on tenterhooks in case the weather changed whilst singing outside at the surprise birthday
party. We received an enthusiastic response to our singing and we were lucky that the weather held; we are
looking forward to a warmer and sunnier summer. Hope you managed to get a seat at St Minver Church on the 27 th
July when we combined forces with St Minver B band to perform in a joint concert. What a great evening!
Please look out for us this month. On Saturday afternoon the 4 th August we will be entertaining at the BBQ held in
aid of Cancer Research at Blisland Green (outside the pub) and on the afternoon of Saturday 25 th August we will
be the guest entertainers at The St Tudy W.I. annual garden party.
We sing in A Cappella, 4 part harmony barbershop style and are pleased that we continue to steadily extend our
range and repertoire, We are adding new songs all the time and this summer have begun singing a really lively
number I’m gonna live ‘til I die and that great swing song Stormy weather (hope that doesn’t mean more rain!!).
Moor Harmony Ladies Barbershop Chorus welcomes any lady who loves to sing. Come and join us at our
rehearsal to see what a great time we have. We love performing in public and have been delighted by the
enthusiastic response and many compliments we have received at our sing-outs. If you have an event, large or
small you would like us to sing at please contact our events manager Sally. We meet on Thursdays at the
Wadebridge Ambulance Hall, Fairpark Road (behind the cinema). Just turn up on the night (at 7.15pm) or phone to
find out more details.
A GOOD READ
Elizabeth: Her Life, Our Times. A Diamond Jubilee Celebration.
By Alan Titchmarsh.
16
He’s a bit of a National Treasure himself, so who better than Alan Titchmarsh to go digging deep into the
Royal archives for this cheerful tribute to the Queen?
And he’s done a grand job of it. He looks at her as a monarch, as a mum and a grandmother and as a
brave and remarkable woman in her own right.
His personal encounters with the Queen and other members of the Royal family help him to tell the story
of her reign without any feeling of a dry history lesson – he paints characters sympathetically and with
plenty of interesting asides about their quirks and foibles.
There’s a treasure trove of detail about all the key events, the coronation, the world tours, all those royal
weddings we watched so avidly and the Silver and Golden Jubilees.
And he doesn’t shy away from the bad times. He takes us back to the dreadful “annus horribilis “ of 1992
when the marriages of her three eldest children ended and Windsor Castle caught fire, and the terrible
year of 1997 when Princess Diana died and for a while the mood of the country seemed to have turned
against the Queen.
It all sets the the Queen’s dignity, sense of duty and sheer hard work into context. In marked contrast to
many other members of her family, no matter how grim things were at home, no matter how gruelling her
routine of engagements, she has never stopped doing her best. Like the nation’s favourite tea-towel slogan,
our monarch always keeps calm and carries on.
Alan has amassed enough meticulous research to keep a pub quizmaster in business for months and
this book has been beautifully illustrated with the pick of the best royal photos from the past 60 years.
There are also endless illustrations of memorabilia which will fascinate anyone interested in British society
and how it has changed over the past 60 years. We may not be so politely reverent nowadays –
some modern memorabilia is downright saucy - but there is no mistaking our national affection for a
Monarch who has served us so well for 60 years.
For many of us this has been a year to remember because of the Jubilee parties and events we helped
organise or the celebrations that we enjoyed. This book is a perfect companion for the souvenirs and
photos we will be storing away to remind ourselves of a Diamond year.
