Roosevelt halls. A dance studio is located on the second<br />

floor of the West Quad Center. By Fall 2014, <strong>Brooklyn</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> will complete construction of the new Leonard &<br />

Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts that will serve the<br />

rehearsal and performance needs of both the Conservatory<br />

of Music and the Department of Theater. In addition to a<br />

fully equipped 220-seat, multipurpose performance space,<br />

two large music rehearsal spaces, a theater rehearsal space,<br />

and scene shop, the Tow Center will include numerous music<br />

teaching studios, chamber-music rehearsal spaces, practice<br />

rooms, a recording studio, and a sound lab for the programs<br />

of the Center for Computer Music and PIMA.<br />

The Conservatory of Music also maintains a select library<br />

of books and scores; playback facilities for records, tapes,<br />

compact discs and CD-ROMs; and a large collection of musical<br />

instruments for instructional use. The Theater Department<br />

has access to two stages, three acting studios, a directing<br />

studio, dressing rooms, lighting and carpentry areas, a costume<br />

construction workshop, instructional audiovisual equipment,<br />

and a design lab. It also offers a special library and reading<br />

room for theater majors.<br />

The <strong>Brooklyn</strong> <strong>College</strong> Preparatory Center for the Performing<br />

Arts is the precollege component of the Conservatory of<br />

Music and the Department of Theater. It offers community<br />

programs in music, theater, and dance for children 3 to 18<br />

years of age and for adults. Its Suzuki Program for violin and<br />

cello is among the largest and most successful of New York<br />

City’s Suzuki schools. Student and faculty recitals are held<br />

regularly in Studio 312 in Roosevelt Hall Extension. It is open<br />

to all who seek high-quality training by professional artist<br />

teachers, from beginners to those preparing for college-level<br />

Personal counseling offers individual, couples, family ,and group<br />

counseling; short-term therapy; crisis intervention; referrals to<br />

off-campus services; and a range of life-skills workshops for<br />

test anxiety, stress management, etc. All services are free and<br />

confidential.<br />

Office of Student Assistance and<br />

Referral (SAR)<br />

The Office of Student Assistance and Referral (SAR) helps<br />

students find accurate information, weigh their options, and<br />

make referrals to resources on and off campus. SAR also<br />

provides oversight for selected student emergency loans and<br />

grant funds administered by the Division of Student Affairs.<br />

The Student Ombudsperson<br />

The student ombudsperson seeks to ensure the<br />

responsiveness of the college to individual student concerns<br />

and, as such, has oversight for the Office of Student Assistance<br />

and Referral (SAR). The ombudsperson working with SAR’s<br />

staff assists students in gaining access to college services and<br />

programs for which they are eligible. The ombudsperson<br />

functions both for the individual student and for the college<br />

in serving its primary constituent, the student. For further<br />

Television Center<br />

The Television Center provides television production and<br />

post-production facilities and technical support to the<br />

Department of Television and Radio. Students enrolled in<br />

the department’s graduate programs may be employed by<br />

the center as part-time production assistants and have the<br />

opportunity to participate in various aspects of television<br />

production. The center’s facilities include a multicamera studio<br />

with live switching capabilities, digital editing facilities, audio<br />

production suites, professional field-production equipment,<br />

and the state-of-the-art student radio station, BCR.<br />

Veterans Affairs and Counseling Center<br />

The center provides orientation counseling; assistance with<br />

admission procedures, academic planning and tutoring;<br />

and liaison with the Veterans Administration and other<br />

government agencies. It also provides referrals for pro bono<br />

legal services, medical benefits, post-traumatic stress disorder<br />

(PTSD) counseling, career opportunities, and updated<br />

information on federal and state benefits. Peer counselors<br />

help veterans file applications for the GI bill, VA Work Study,<br />

and other educational benefits.
