Boarders Ski trip
On the 17th of August, moments
after the school bell rang at 3:15pm,
twenty-one boarders gathered in
front of the victoria rd. gates. each of us
filled with the keen spirit of adventure.
We have been dreaming of this day for
months. Some would call us enthusiasts,
others may call us desperate. We were so
close we could almost feel the snow. But
our passion was soon drowned out when
one of us announced, “Only an 8hr bus drive
ahead of us!” Suddenly the boys went silent.
This meant that we would arrive at our
destination at a ruthless hour of the night.
Peak hour traffic in Sydney was to blame!
It took us two and a half hours to leave
Sydney. By the time we reached Jindabyne
in the early hours of the morning, all of
us including the teachers, mr A. Slavin,
mr Williams and mr John Dunne from On
Course Tours, were exhausted and depraved
of sleep. We headed quickly to our cabins
and went straight to bed.
every morning in the boarding house we
are woken up by a teacher at Cranbrook,
but this day was different. Instead of
pleading for more sleep, we jumped out
of bed in a matter of milliseconds to the
usual commanding tone of mr A. Slavin at
5:30am. With enthusiasm we hurried to what
we now know as the best breakfast in the
southern hemisphere, where we ate. And it
was good.
With our bellies bloated we
hopped onto the bus to Perisher,
in hope of a stunning day ahead
of us. And stunning it was. Inches
high of powdered snow (with
more forecasted to come) and
the warmth from the clear blue
sky made it an ideal day to be
shredding the slopes.
After we got our ski gear we
headed straight to our lessons,
which were split based on
experience. The first couple
of hours are always the most
exciting
as you
get to watch
your friends lose
control and crash
into a few strangers.
By the end of the
lesson, we already
had two careless
boys lose their ski
passes. This put us
off track for half an
hour, but once they
got new passes, we
split into groups and
went our separate
ways to explore the
mountains.
By the end of the
day, all of us were exhausted. We were all
looking forward to a hot dinner and good
game of rugby union. unfortunately, the
rugby wasn’t the highlight of the night (the
All Blacks won) but the dinner was great.
However, the best part of the night would
be Big Alex’s (AkA russian Bear) rave party
in his room. Too bad no ladies were able to
attend due to unforeseen circumstances.
After this, around 10.00pm, we headed off
to bed, looking forward to tomorrow being
another great day.
We woke up bright and early once again
to the same routine as well as a superb
breakfast. Once we arrived at Perisher,
the sun was shining and the slopes were
glowing. It was beautiful day to be at the
snowy mountains. It took us no time to get
from the hill
our gear ready and soon, boys were already
lining up for a quick run before the lessons
began.
During the intermediate snowboarders
lesson, when the boys were at the top of
mt Piper fun park, we could not believe the
sight in front of us. Our very own Cranbrook
Olympian, Steve Solomon. Things only got
better from here. A big group of us headed
to mt Blue Cow where we encountered
slopes more challenging than mr Tunica’s
gym routine, and cliffs reaching higher than
the clouds. This was a new and exciting
experience for most of us. It didn’t end well
for a few boys like edoardo who jumped off
and flew head first into a tree.
Time flies when you’re having fun. It
wasn’t long before we had to head back
to Smiggins and rendezvous with the rest
of the boarders. We hopped on the bus at
3:30pm with good memories and no regrets.
Thank you to mr A Slavin for his organisation
of the weekend. Thanks also to mr Williams
and mr John Dunne for making this trip
possible. It was certainly a weekend we will
always remember and we’re looking forward
to the trip next year!
