Purpose<br />

<strong>Health</strong> service providers, program managers, and policymakers need <strong>to</strong><br />

access and use quality, relevant health information <strong>to</strong> effectively perform<br />

their work. Unfortunately, multiple barriers <strong>to</strong> health information exist,<br />

particularly in the developing world. K4<strong>Health</strong> is designed <strong>to</strong> remove<br />

impediments <strong>to</strong> accessing and adapting health information and <strong>to</strong> facilitate<br />

knowledge exchange at global, regional and local levels.<br />

Services Provided<br />

K4<strong>Health</strong> provides global leadership in health knowledge management<br />

- the synthesis, exchange, adaptation and use of health information. The<br />

project’s major components include:<br />

A global web portal, www.k4health.org, offering:<br />

• A Google cus<strong>to</strong>m search <strong>to</strong>ol <strong>to</strong> help users quickly find vetted resources;<br />

• eLearning courses for rapid or just-in-time learning;<br />

• eToolkits with specialized materials on priority health <strong>to</strong>pics; collections<br />

that users can design, develop, or modify <strong>to</strong> meet local needs;<br />

and<br />

• Virtual discussion forums that provide participants access <strong>to</strong> a community<br />

of experts around the world;<br />

• Data on health information needs, preferences for obtaining and sharing<br />

information, and typical uses of information technologies; and<br />

• Field-based information needs data collection <strong>to</strong>ols and programming<br />

<strong>to</strong> respond <strong>to</strong> identified needs.<br />

Regional and country knowledge management platforms, contributing:<br />

• A compilation of key health information materials provided in local<br />

languages including the Family Planning Global Handbook and Wall<br />

Chart;<br />

• Novel and easy ways <strong>to</strong> access health information at local levels;<br />

• m<strong>Health</strong> applications <strong>to</strong> improve information exchange amongst providers;<br />

and<br />

• A process <strong>to</strong> gather information from health workers and facilitate the<br />

exchange of information amongst them.<br />
