Nynäshamn
Further out
Many believe the most beautiful part of Stockholm’s archipelago,
maybe the most beautiful archipelago in the world, is in the
south, in the Municipality of Nynäshamn. It is commonly said that
the archipelago down here, less than an hour from Downtown
Stockholm, is more barren and unexploited than that nearer
Stockholm. In many ways, Nynäshamn is the gateway to the islands
and countries of the Baltic. Nynäshamn and, not least, the island of
Öja (also called Landsort) is definitely the last outpost to the sea.
Here, seabirds brood undisturbed and sea eagles glide majestically
over the smooth bays and unspoiled islands. Here, it’s easy to find
your own special place, and you will be close to great experiences.
We hope and believe that the magazine you hold in your hand will
guide and inspire you to a rewarding meeting with Nynäshamn, the
surroundings and its archipelago.
NyNäshamN,
a summary
There are numerous remains from the
Stone Age and Viking Age in the area,
though the town of Nynäshamn cannot
be said to have taken shape until 1898.
It was the start of the building of the
railway that year that cleared the way for what was
to be the starting shot for several industries in the
municipality as well as a spa resort on the Island of
Trehörningen – a spa resort that lay fallow for decades
until it rose from the ashes to become a modern spa
resort in 2003.
The first big boom in terms of the population
trend was when the railway connected Stockholm to
Nynäshamn. The number of inhabitants in what was
then called the Parish of Ösmo increased from 100
to 1700 in 10 years. The tele-workshops were then
established in the 1920s. These workshops would
later take on a new guise under the management of
Telia and finally Ericsson, which closed down its factories
here a couple of years ago. At the end of the
1920s, the Johnson Group’s oil refinery Nynäs was
also set up here, one of the biggest employers in the
municipality to this day.
The number of inhabitants in the Municipality of
Nynäshamn has recently passed 26,000. The building
of new dwellings is flourishing and many believe the
new motorway from Stockholm and the expansion of
double tracks for the commuter train will have almost
as great an impact on Nynäshamn as the railway had
more than 100 years ago.
Nynäshamn has a long history as a port. Already at the beginning of the 20th century, the port’s potential was clear. With the deepwater
harbour, which is easily accessible by big vessels, large quantities of goods are loaded and unloaded here. There is also a
busy passenger service, especially in summer when a million people visit the Island of Gotland. You can also cross the Baltic from
Nynäshamn. Polferries will take you to Gdansk in Poland and Scandlines goes to Ventspils in Latvia, and if you would like to travel
to the desolate and maybe most beautiful sandy beaches in Northern Europe, take the boat to Gotska Sandön. Waxholmsbolaget
operates regular services all the year round including to Landsort, Nåttarö, Ålö and Rånö. If you would like to go to Trosa, a local
operator runs services in the summer. Seal safari on the outskirts of the archipelago is another popular excursion. There are also
archipelago cruises, including through the dramatic Draget Canal.
walk On water
It is a curious fact that the sea that entices us
to swim in the summer offers fantastic skating
in the winter. The winter climate around Stockholm,
with a temperature around freezing, provides
ideal conditions for ice. As well as all the
bays, the lakes also offer excellent conditions.
You can almost always find good skating ice
from December to March. For more info and all
inclusive arrangements see www.iceguide.se
swimming fun
As you are never far from water in the Municipality of Nynäshamn,
you are never far from a refreshing swim. We have
some absolute favourites. Muskan is a lake that usually keeps
a comfortable temperature, by Scandinavian standards, but
it is the seaside resorts that attract most swimmers. Inside
the skerries, Nickstabadet is Nynäshamn’s answer to Waikiki
Beach. One of the most beautiful, popular and really wild
places to swim with an unbroken horizon is out on Knappelskär
by Lövhagen. The temperature, however, is, to put it
mildly, moderate. The warmest place is usually in Rassa Vikar
by Kärringboda.
an eldOradO fOr wrecks
Nowhere else in the world has as many old wooden wrecks.
The unique environment in the brackish water of the Baltic Sea
means that the shipworm, which is fatal to wooden boats, cannot
survive here. This has led to the waters in the southern part of
Stockholm’s archipelago having the highest density of old wooden
shipwrecks. Many organisers arrange dives to the best wrecks.
The jetty Havstrappan in the fishing port is a summer classic. If you like to see
and, even more, be seen, Havstrappan is the place – easy to put in at and the
perfect place to mingle, with ice cream, smoked fish, sea food and fast food.
great fishing
Fishing tours are normally carried out in the waters outside Muskö and
Dalarö, and, yes, the fish bite readily. We can mention, for example, that the
record weights in kilos for the guided tours currently stand at: Pike 15.5, perch
1.7, sea trout 9.8, pikeperch 6.7 and salmon 25.4 kilos. Most of the catch is put
back. The picture shows Hasse Skoglund with a salmon of almost 22 kilos. For
Smoked keepS
Smoking used to be a way of preserving food, just like salting
was for fish and meat. Yes, some even claim that smoking
is an older way of preserving meat and fish than salting.
Today, smoking is more about enhancing the taste
experience. At Nynäs Rökeri, you will find everything
from smoked eel to smoked Baltic herring. Two other
favourites are smoked prawns and locally caught whitefish
smoked here – just perfect for a picnic on the
quay.
TradiTional cake
Sorunda has big farms with a thousand years of history
and the area abounds with ancient remains, not
least from the Viking Age (approx 792 to 1100, ie,
late Iron Age). The Sorunda cake is still baked here to
this day. The cake recipe is so secret that an 00 agent
would have to take the life of anyone he told. Out of
consideration for our readers, we will not disclose any
m a g a s i n
008 Nynäshamn
ingredients other than butter and sugar, but we can disclose
that it tastes like no other cake and that your best
chance of a taste is at Sorunda Hembygdsförening. The
cake is also available to buy at Ösmo Plantshop, Växtstigen
1, by Ösmo junction.
Brewed By ÅngBryggerieT
The editorial staff fell for several of the dozen or so different
beers produced by Nynäshamns Ångbryggeri, but
as the lager lovers we are, our first recommendation is
Landsort Lager. It is a light Swedish lager with balanced
sweetness and medium bitterness – and if you taste it
very carefully you may, like Sweden’s most read beer
expert Göran Winberg, discover tones with hints of
freshly baked buns and summer apples. Landsort Lager
and many other beers from Ångbryggeriet are available
from Systembolaget*.
* Systembolaget is the Swedish Alcohol Retail Monopoly and is
open daily except Sundays.

chocoholicS
The cocoa boom of recent years cannot have escaped
anyone’s notice, and Chokladhuset and Tryffelfabriken in
Nynäshamn are quite close to paradise for all chocolate
and sweet aficionados. Luxurious and delicious. And most
likely good for your well being, by all means.
SauSage lengThwiSe
At Segersängsvägen 10 in Sorunda you will find something
as unusual as a real sausage factory that makes
something as unusual as real, hand-tied sausages. The
Sorunda sausages were previously found mostly at restaurants,
but they are now also available in many shops
in the Municipality of Nynäshamn. The sausages are sold
in shops from Nyköping in the south to Norrtälje in the
north. The bestsellers are primarily Sorundaringen, a lightly
smoked and boiled sausage, and the Chorizo, a lovely
sausage with just the right amount of heat.
nynäsHamn delicacies
Luxurious and delicious. And most likely
good for your well being, by all means.
old School goodieS
Old-fashioned delicacies of world class – that is the
aim of Nilssons Köttaffär. Real, well-hung, handmade
cured meats and many local and organic
products such as fresh eggs and potatoes from
Sorunda.
hunny
Whether you are a bear of very little brain, or have a
sweet tooth for bee products you’ll love Nynäshamns
local honey from the island Herrö.
SpiceS and jam
The spice mixture Skärgårdssalt is almost a classic, but
we would also like to recommend the super-fresh jam
Skärgårdssylt (raspberry, blackberry, strawberry and blueberry).
And if you visit the shop, don’t miss the slightly hot
mustard Skärgårdssenap (saffron and whisky flavour).
There are so many attractions in the area. Depending on your level of ambition,
different sights attract different people. We have put together a collection of
some of the most popular places to visit in the municipality.
plAces To VisiT
FurThesT ouT
Landsort is the last outpost to the sea in
the south for the municipality and the
whole of the Stockholm area. Here the
archipelago is at its most barren, least
exploited and most beautiful. You cannot
go further out. This is home to an exotic
collection of birds (they pass through in
the autumn and spring), Sweden’s oldest
lighthouse (dating from the 1650s)
and one of Sweden and Europe’s most
spectacular Bed & Breakfasts: the old pilot
lookout tower. Pilotage services for passing
vessels operate from the island’s western
harbour. Don’t miss the plague churchyard,
ancient maze, art exhibition and tiny
chapel. Landsort offers several options for
overnight accommodation as well as a restaurant
and simple cafés. Boat trips depart
daily all the year round. For more info visit
The Vikings
There are 27 rune stones in the
municipality, making it one of the
top municipalities in Sweden in
terms of number of rune stones.
And if you follow the old road
between Djursnäs and Vansta, you
will see several interesting rune
stones and grave fields. The area
was very densely populated during
the Iron Age. The rune stones were
raised around the year 1000, ie, during
what is usually called the Viking
Age, and are often located in connection
to roads and fords. Although
the stones were often raised in
memory of someone, they are not
really gravestones.
most interesting churches on your
Sorunda Church is one of the biggest
churches in Södermanland. The oldest
parts of the stone church date from the
end of the 12th century. The church has
the oldest noble crypt in Sweden and a
Madonna cabinet from the late 15th century.
Ösmo also has a stunning church dating
from the 12th century. Inside, the church
is decorated with frescos that were added
just after the mid-15th century. The paintings
are said to be by Peter Målare and his
disciple Albertus Pictor, the most famous
church painter of the Middle Ages. More
recent research, however, has established
that Peter Målare did not really exist so to
speak. It must therefore have been Alber

tus Pictor alone who produced the paintings
in Ösmo Church, and that is not to be
sneered at. Here, we can add a piece of
useless information about August Strindberg,
Sweden’s answer to Shakespeare,
who despite being an atheist most of his
life, gave trial sermons in Ösmo Church.
plAnTs AnD coFFee
Ösmo Plantshop has become a popular
place with visitors. It’s not just the plants
and garden-related shopping that attract
people. The plant shop is one of only a
few places in the municipality where you
can enjoy a coffee and the legendary local
delicacy Sorundatårtan cake. It also serves
lunch.
A nicer spA
Although it is
now an ultramodern
spa
resort, it has
a long history
dating back no
less than a hundred
years. At the
start of the 20th century, Nynäshamn
invested in a spa resort. The resort,
Nynäs Havsbad, was built, attracting
prominent guests who wanted health
baths at the spa. A few years ago, the
facility underwent a complete renovation,
and today it is one of Sweden’s most
exclusive spa facilities.
The most beautiful skerry
Knappelskär is the last mainland promontory
at the end of Gårdsfjärden to the
south. There is a spectacular, to say the
least, fissure cave to discover as well as
two fantastic beaches. There are also two
barbecue areas at the end where the
beaches meet the great cliff. The walk
around Lövhagen Nature Reserve via
Bötet and Stockbonäs (where the wakeboard
club meets) does of course also
include this beautiful peninsula.
An
environmentally
damaging
activity has laid the
foundations for a
spectacular sight. With
the now closed cement
factory, the grounds around the limestone
quarry in Stora Vika were opened up to
exotic flora and fauna. The calcareous
ground combined with the open landscape
has attracted a range of unusual life. Those
who take the butterfly path around the
limestone quarry can expect to find the
Apollo butterfly and silver-washed fritillary
as well as the plants crimson crane’s-bill
and musk thistle. There is also beaver,
common newt and much else to see
when it comes to animals and plants. The
limestone quarry is a sight in its own right
and an added bonus.
EvEryonE’s right
Sweden has a well-established law and practice known as Allemansrätten (common right of access to private land). This law gives you the
right to enjoy nature, also on privately owned land. You can even camp for up to three nights without special permission just about anywhere,
provided you do so outside private home zones, which usually cover approximately a normal garden or the area within sight of a residential
property or other place where a person resides. You may of course not pick cultivated flowers, crops or fruit, though you can take berries and
mushrooms. Nor can you build a fire anyhow, litter or damage nature in any way.
If you paddle south from the guest harbor you will eventually end up where this picture was taken last summer. If you hurry it takes 20 minutes,
if you’re more laid back you will spend an hour in the kayak before reaching the southern part of the island Yttre Gården.
If you would like to paddle in Nynäshamn, there are practically no limits other than your imagination. Kayaks are available for hire in many
places in the municipality. Photo: Niclas Sjögren

SidewayS
NyNäShamN
at the eNd of the 1970’S, a few wave-surfing Swedes discovered that
surfable waves rolled in to Torö Stenstrand in Ören Nature Reserve. At the
same time, windsurfing had become widely popular, and the most dedicated
surfers made their way to Torö when the waves were at their biggest.
The windsurfers wanted wind and waves while the wave surfers preferred
big waves without wind – quite an unusual phenomenon in the Baltic
Sea area. Torö Stenstrand soon became nationally famous in wave-surfing
circles, and in 1985 the first Swedish Wave Surfing Championships were
arranged there. Since then, this has been repeated at least 90 per cent
of the time that it has been possible to arrange Swedish Championships.
At the end of the 1990s, the kite surfers also discovered Torö, and today
there is no surfing location more legendary than this stony beach.
As well as wave, wind- and kite surfing, Nynäshamn has also become
known as an eldorado for wakeborders. The traditional Nynäshamn waterskiing
club has changed its name to Nynäshamns Wakeboardklubb, NWK,
and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. For more on championships,
a trial ride and membership see www.nwk.nu. NWK is without a doubt one
of Sweden’s most trendy clubs, not least for young talents. Johan Wikström
(photo), for example, has competed quite a bit for the national team and
has a Swedish Championship gold medal in his prize collection.
torö SteNStraNd is located in Ören Nature Reserve, approximately 20 km from the centre of Nynäshamn, 60 km south of
Stockholm. Head for Herrhamra and turn right just before Ankarudden, immediately after the beautiful beech avenue. Keep left, park
and go down to the water by the first public car park. The waves at Torö Stenstrand are best with a straight southerly wind, but a
south-westerly or south-easterly wind can also produce surfable waves. The waves at Torö Stenstrand need to be at least 1 m high
to be worth the effort of going there (check the wave height at www.smhi.se). In summer, the waves are seldom as big as they are
later in the year. Autumn is the best time for waves and the Swedish Surfing Championships usually take place at Torö Stenstrand
on a Saturday at the end of September or beginning of October, depending on the conditions. The secret to Torö Stenstrand often
having surfable waves is partly its exposed location and partly the profile of the seabed: deep sea that quickly becomes shallow.
Notable visit
Bird lovers in Nynäshamn are spoilt. Every now and then, more or less
exotic birds come by. one of the more unusual species in recent times was
the mandarin duck, which visited the harbour area. The mandarin duck
belongs in Asia, but has been seen colonising parts of the British Isles.
We don’t yet know if it has come to stay in Nynäshamn. Nynäshamn is
an eldorado for birdwatchers with many unusual species passing by here
every year. Species like the sea eagle, tern, cormorant and eider are among
the more common sightings.
fire
In mid-october, the archipelago will celebrate the start of autumn. This is
a quieter period than the summer, which is noticeable by the restaurants
and other businesses putting on special events. Fireworks, torchlight processions,
special menus, excursions, punch and a BBQ theme will light up
the autumn evenings. The theme is quite simply fire. For more information,
Nothing beats the sunflower when it comes to beauty. Ask vincent van gogh.
Sunflowers are usually ready for picking in July and August. The arrangement
is pick your own, self-service and self-payment. Leave the money in a sweet
little letterbox. What could be more picturesque than picking sunflowers in
Hoxla in Sorunda?
The world’s longest gym is of course outdoors, along the lovely Strandvägen
(colloquially ringvägen) to be exact. The course, or the gym, is 3 kilometers
one way and has 5 stations with a total of 11 gym machines. The editorial staff
have of course tried it out and can confirm that it is not just the world’s longest
but also the world’s nicest-looking gym. use of the machines and views of the
unbroken sea horizon are completely free.
the goal is to build more than 2000 homes and
for the population to grow from 26,000 to 35,000
inhabitants by 2016 – and building is under way with
investments of over 10 billion seK.
NyNäshamN closer
Some claim that the new motorway that now is completed, road 73,
is the biggest thing that has happened to Nynäshamn since the railway
was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Now it takes only
30 minutes to reach Nynäshamn from the Stockholm globe Arena.
iNvestmeNts iN traiNs
Nynäsbanan, the local railway between västerhaninge and
Nynäshamn, will be refurbished with passing tracks at Nynäsgård
and construction of a double track on the västerhaninge-Tungelsta
stretch. The work is expected to be completed in 2012.
Natural gas
The building of the terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNg) at
Brunnsviksholmen started in autumn 2008. LNg is natural gas converted
to liquid form by cooling it. That process reduces its volume
by a factor of more than 600. The terminal, which is in operation
since may 2011, is the first of its kind in the Baltic sea.
New Port
Ports of Stockholm is planning a new freight port for rolling cargo
and containers at Norvik (Nynäshamn). The construction start date
will be set as soon as all permits are granted. NCC is planning a
Logistics and Business Park of 600,000 square metres in the same
area. For more information: www.stoports.com
Alkärrsplan utvecklings AB, a company owned by two Norwegian
companies and the municipality of Nynäshamn, is planning to
build a 15 500 m2 big shopping centre at Alkärrsplan in central
Nynäshamn. New dwellings and car parks are also being planned
for, with direct access to the shopping centre.
the fishiNg harbour
The formal procedure of planning for the development of the
picturesque fishing harbour of Nynäshamn started during 2010.
The framework consists of a “harbour vision” formulated by an
appointed group of politicians, two architectural designed proposals
and comments and proposals sent in from the public. The
objectives are to develop the fishing- and guest harbour to a more
vivid area and make a natural attachment to the town centre.
a variety of housiNg
There are several on-going building projects with different kinds of
housing: Picturesque red wooden houses in Segersäng, a former
hospital converted into apartments on the island Trehörningen,
an 18-storey, spectacularly designed, apartment house containing
260 apartments with a sea view or your own place in the countryside
with space for yourself and for your horse.
royal family carved in the rock, the
community centre with the old fishing
croft Luddes Stuga and Nynäshamn
Yacht Club. Strandvägen’s predecessor
consisted of wooden jetties built
when the Olympic regattas were held
in Nynäshamn in 1912. Several geological
sights line the road including
fissure caves that have been hollowed
out by the waves. Lövhagen recreational
area has many roads, trails and
exercise tracks for walking, jogging and
skiing. The area also offers nice sandy
beaches, cliffs suitable for swimming,
fishing and places to camp.
Våtmark Alhagen (wetland)
Nynäshamn
In Alhagen, the water surfaces and
fresh vegetation of the wetland meet
dramatic, sheer mountainsides and
rich forest environments. When
the wetland was established, there
was already a diversity of biotopes,
habitats that were home to a number
of rare animals and plants. The area
has six kilometres of paths to allow
visitors to study the rich plant and
animal life close up. If you would like
to get closer to the water, you can
walk along the embankments that
separate the wetland dams.
gARDEN
Gösta’s garden
Nynäshamn
Svandammsparken is a filled bay that
has become a multi-activity park that
includes a boules court. The southern
part of the park has a collection
of many beautiful plants. This part is
commonly known as Gösta’s Garden.
The garden is tended by garden
amateurs in Nynäshamn.
stone road, runs between Djursnäs
Säteri in the south and Norra Stutby
Vårdkasen (The beacon)
Fituna, Sorunda
The beacon is one of the oldest,
authentic beacons in Sweden and
is built on a big barrow, probably
from the Bronze Age. Next to it are
the foundations of a house, possibly
the residence of the beacon guard.
The beacon was part of the warning
system of beacons that previously
existed around the coasts of Södertörn.
There are magnificent views
from Vårdkaseberget, the beacon,
over Himmerfjärden and Sorunda’s
west coast. Information Nynäshamn
ChURChES
Nynäshamn Church
Nynäshamn church rises on a cliff
by the harbour. With its characteristic
profile, it is an excellent navigation
mark for sailors. Nynäshamn Church
was designed by Professor Lars Israel
Wahlman and completed in 1930.
The church sewing circle and Kyrkans
Vänner (the Friends of the Church)
had been collecting money and
gifts for over 15 years to pay for the
building work.
Sorunda Church
Sorunda Church is one of the largest
in Södermanland. The oldest parts of
the stone-built church date from the
late 12th century The Bååth family
chapel is the oldest of its kind in
Sweden. The paintings in the chapel
date from 1549. The church also
contains a Madonna cabinet from the
Lübeck workshop of Herman Rode,
probably dating from the 1480:s.
Swedish author Moa Martinsson is
buried at Sorunda Church.
Torö Church
Torö Church is a small place of
worship, typical of those built in
the sparsely populated archipelago
parishes. The church was damaged
during the Russian assaults of 1719
and lack of money meant it was
unable to be rebuilt until 1738
when funds for the restoration work
had been collected by means of a
national collection. The church was
plastered in 1849 and the windows
gained their present round-arched
shape in connection with renovation
work in 1880. The interior was
modernised in 1930.
Ösmo Church
The oldest part of the stone-built
church was constructed in the latter
part of the 12th century. The interior
of the church is decorated with
frescos added just after the middle
of the 15th century. It is said that the
frescos were painted by Peter Målare
and his apprentice Albertus Pictor;
the most famous church artists of
the medieval period. The church also
contains a large number of coats
of arms used in processions, and a
triumphal crucifix.
NYNÄSHAMN GUEST HARBOUR
A HARBOUR FOR ALL THE FAMILY
We care about our environment. That’s why we’ve made it easy for you to think green on your holiday too.
In Nynäshamn’s guest harbour, we do our best to help you do your part, without making it boring or
complicated. Make an active choice when you choose a harbour, so we can all continue to enjoy fresh, clean
sea air in the future.
