25 Years Ago in the Beltsville News
Congresswoman Gladys Noon
Spellman visited the USDA’s
Beltsville Agricultural Research
Center (BARC) to observe the
Youth Conservation Corps program.
Dr. Paul A. Putnam, newly
appointed Director of BARC,
greeted Congresswoman Spellman
with a gift of experimental
thornless blackberries provided by
Dr. M. Faust, Chief of the Fruit
Laboratory.
The second round of workshops
open to the public on the
proposed Intercounty Connector
was scheduled to take place
between August 12 and 26, 1980.
GUNPOWDER GOLF
continued from page 1
a controversial land swap in which
Ryland-Artery would give their
property to the Maryland-National
Capital Park and Planning Commission
in exchange for a portion
of Fairland Regional Park. The
developers’ original plan included
396 homes surrounding an 18-hole
golf course. About two-thirds of
the houses would have been built
in Montgomery County, while the
rest would lie in Prince George’s
County.
Despite the recent developments,
Gunpowder owner Thomas
Milligan remains “cautiously optimistic”
since Ryland-Artery has
not counted out future developments
in the Fairland area. “I listen
to what happens, but I have to
reserve my comments,” Milligan
said. “You have to look at all the
Michael C. Helling of Beltsville
was among 80 students aged
9-12 participating in a course entitled,
“The Dynamics of Sound”
at the Maryland Science Center
in Baltimore. The course was a
part of a program of the Maryland
Center for the Gifted and
Talented.
Ensign Marvin Heinze, son
of Dr. and Mrs. Peter Heinze of
Cedar Lane, completed the Surface
Warfare Officer’s Basic Course at
Newport, R.I.
The highlight of Boy Scout
Troop 1033’s summer camp
experience during the week of
July 6-13, 1980 was winning the
evidence, don’t you?”
Milligan said he would improve
Gunpowder Golf Course if the
developers agree to work with
him and the course’s management.
“I’m very anxious to work with
Artery-Ryland if they would like
to work on improving the golf
course,” he said.
“Right now, basically the golf
course is holding its own. We
don’t charge enough money to
have huge operating capital. We
can’t build a million dollar clubhouse,”
said Milligan, pointing out
that Gunpowder has had a year-toyear
lease with MNCPPC since
1978. “As it is, we can certainly
maintain it and run it very efficiently
for our customers.”
As Gunpowder member Cathy
McIntyre worked on her putting
stroke on the course’s practice
green, she said she was relieved
when Ryland-Artery scrapped
their plans. “I’m thrilled they’re
not going through with it,” said
McIntyre, a member for six
years. “You can play for a reasonable
price here. Other places,
they charge you twice as much or
more.”
Gunpowder Golf Course charges
between $14 and $19 to play in
the summer, while nearby upscale
courses such as Cross Creek Country
Club charge between $25 and
$69 per round. Patuxent Greens
Country Club, located within 10
miles of Gunpowder, charges up
to $55 per 18 holes.
McIntyre said the closure of
Gunpowder would be devastating
for the entire community, since
so many friendships have been
forged on the course’s fairways
and greens. “It’s sort of a family
here,” she said. “Everyone knows
each other and have been friends
for a long time. There are people
here who probably couldn’t afford
to play anywhere else.”
