14 Creative Arts in Review 2012 Music Tour On Thursday September 13, 54 of our finest string, band and choir ensemble students, embarked on TSAC’s first ever Sydney Music Tour. From day one our trip was packed with unique musical experiences, starting with a visit to the Australian Institute of Music (AIM). Here, students partook in an extremely valuable workshop with some of AIM’s very experienced and industry connected teaching staff. In this workshop, students learnt the “Twelve-Bar Blues” as well as the skill of improvisation. The next day students walked through and discovered the history of this nation’s premier tertiary music institution, The Sydney Conservatorium of Music. While there students were fortunate enough to sit in and watch The Conservatorium High School as they rehearsed for an upcoming performance. After a brisk walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, we then travelled to SCEGGS Redlands School where we combined with Redlands’ Ensembles to prepare for that evening’s performance. Following an early barbeque dinner, we performed our set repertoire as well as a combined piece with Redlands. The sound created when the two ensembles combined was remarkable and exciting to be a part of. On the third day we did a guided tour of the iconic Sydney Opera House and learnt the controversial history of how it almost didn’t come to be. After some shopping at the Rocks Markets, we made our way to Dance Chance, a non-profit corporation for people with varying disabilities. Here, we had the privilege of dancing with, and performing for, some extraordinary people, along with their dedicated volunteers. This was said to be a highlight for many of the students and staff on tour. To then finish off an already incredible day, we were lucky enough to catch a fireworks show that evening on Darling Harbour. In this workshop, students learnt the “Twelve-Bar Blues” as well as the skill of improvisation. • Sunday started with a trip to Taronga Zoo with its amazing animals, incredible location and stunning views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Students then travelled to Manly Beach to eat lunch on the shore in the warmth of the sun. From Manly, our next destination was Circular Quay where students were picked up and taken to the final destination for the day, the tallest building in Sydney, the Sydney Tower Eye. After the entertaining 4D Cinema Experience down stairs, it was time to make our way 250 metres above street level to the Observation Deck to soak up the unrivalled views of
Sydney. In the evening, we ended the day with a small Chapel service lead by Reverend Chris, and then finished off the night with some games and awards. On our final day in Sydney, we headed to China Town. After a quick stroll through, we made our way to the Queen Victoria Building and then to Market City for some last minute shopping. Finally, to complete an already amazing trip, we had our lunch at Australia’s iconic Bondi Beach before travelling to the airport to fly home. From visiting the incredible Sydney Opera House, to performing for a wonderful group of people in the lower north shore, The Sydney Music Tour was an experience that none of us will ever forget. 15
