The first slitter
rewinders:
the birth of a
new technology
Johann G. Goebel, who gave his name to the company, could
never have imagined that 160 years later GOEBEL would become
the leading supplier of slitter rewinders. The Darmstadt-based
company has been writing mechanical engineering history since
1851. GOEBEL enjoys international renown thanks to its unique
expertise and technical precision.
And the secret of 160 years of success? Countless innovations
and customer-oriented approach! Innovations which can frequently
be regarded as quantum leaps in machine construction
and developments which are highly regarded by experts in the
field. Innovations which open up new possibilities and which
are soon in common use in a range of industry sectors.
The end result of innovations like these is high-performance
machines for the future, which create jobs and ensure that
GOEBEL remain popular all over the world. The manufacture
of 9,000 slitter rewinders speaks for itself.
160 years of continuity and innovation
The demand for
GOEBEL machines
grows
1883 1893
1851 Peter Gandenberger founds the Gandenberger’sche Maschinen-Fabrik in
Darmstadt. Subsequently renamed the Gandenberger’sche Maschinen-Fabrik
Georg GOEBEL, the company manufactures presses, pumps and weighing machines.
1856 Johann Georg Goebel develops the first machines, on the basis of his own
patents, for the manufacture of railway tickets.
1864 The pioneer Goebel supplies technically advanced machines for converting
paper and conquers the German market.
1883 GOEBEL constructs slitter rewinders for the paper industry. The slitting
technology developed in Darmstadt is the very first to allow for the production
of a genuinely smooth roll face – a unique technology of which GOEBEL remains
master today!
GOEBEL wins certificates of distinction and gold medals at world exhibitions,
attracting the attention of the international market – and the company expands.
Many patent applications are filed over the next few years.
that holds its own
1893 Several patents are awarded for one of the key inventions – the GOEBEL
slitting system. Use of the circular shear slitting process with the strongly wrapped
bottom cutter shaft becomes common property once the patents have expired –
and the process is still in use today.
1938 Development of the GOEBEL rapid-d. Thanks to its excellent converting process
quality, 2,500 machines from this series have been sold since its market launch.
1956 The expansion continues: in addition to printing presses, slitter rewinders for
paper, board, metals and plastic films are now also manufactured.
1976 The paper industry is developing special kinds of paper. GOEBEL’s centre
winder, the optislit, is highly successful thanks to its ability to set contact pressure
and winding tension with extreme precision. The paper industry appreciates the
high finished roll quality, and the optislit continues to be a top-of-the-range model
for converting particularly sensitive paper types.
Dr. Ralf Enderle / Managing Director
GOEBEL Schneid- und Wickelsysteme GmbH:
„In the year 2011 GOEBEL is looking back on a
history that spans 160 years. Over the many decades
and through upheavals of two world wars our
company has developed into a global player for
slitter rewinders. From the very beginning our work
at GOEBEL revolved around paper and, after the
advent of plastic, also film. This involved more and
more inventions and new machine construction -
all in an attempt to offer our customers the best
possible solutions for their needs. One key to our
future success is that we are always anticipating
the needs of tomorrow.”
GmbH
Takeover of the
Swiss company
Senntech AG
1986 The construction of the monoslit is a real coup for GOEBEL.
Demand for this slitter rewinder is extremely high: customers are delighted
with the quality of the finished rolls and the cost-effectiveness in production.
It remains one of the premium systems of choice used by film manufacturers
to this day.
2001 The decision is made to focus on the construction of slitter
rewinders for paper manufacturers and converters, the plastic film
and metal foil industry, and the packaging industry.
2005 With the takeover of Senntech AG, GOEBEL expands its
product range to include machines for the manufacture of
small and short-length rolls.
2011 GOEBEL breaks the width barrier and sells the
widest slitter rewinders in the world: the 11-metrewide
GOEBEL monoslit sets new standards
in the film converting industry.
