Th e Football Association (FA) has launched<br />
a semi-professional competition for women<br />
– the Women’s Super League (WSL).<br />
Chelsea Ladies played Arsenal Ladies in<br />
the inaugural game of the league on 13 April,<br />
which took place at Tooting and Mitcham<br />
United Football Club’s ground and was<br />
screened live on ESPN television.<br />
In addition to Chelsea and Arsenal, six<br />
other teams will compete in 14 rounds of<br />
matches – Birmingham, Bristol, Doncaster,<br />
Everton, Liverpool and Lincoln.<br />

New fi gures published by the Department<br />
for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) have<br />
shown a £35m drop in the anticipated fi nal<br />
cost (AFC) of hosting the 2012 Games.<br />
According to the government’s May <strong>2011</strong><br />
Quarterly Economic Report, the overall<br />
funding package for next summer’s event<br />
remains at nearly £9.3bn.<br />
However, the AFC of the Olympic<br />
Delivery Authority programme now stands<br />
at £7.266bn – a decrease from the £7.301bn<br />
revealed in February’s quarterly fi gures.<br />

A quarter of parents and guardians are worried<br />
that kids are not taking part in enough<br />
physical activity, according to the Lloyds<br />
TSB National School Sport Week survey.<br />
More than four-fi ft hs (81 per cent) said<br />
they believe sport plays an important role<br />
in a child’s development, while 92 per cent<br />
fully back their kids taking part in sport.<br />
Th e survey – commissioned to explore<br />
attitudes of adults with school-age kids –<br />
comes ahead of the Lloyds TSB National<br />
School Sport Week from 27 June-1 July.<br />

Graham Construction is to<br />
build a £21m sports and leisure<br />
centre in Glenrothes,<br />
which will replace the existing<br />
Fife Institute for Physical and<br />
Recreational Education.<br />
Designed by B3 Architects<br />
and Crea8 Architecture, the<br />
facility will be delivered in<br />
stages to ensure minimal disruption<br />
to services during the<br />
construction process.<br />
Th e new complex will comprise<br />
a 25m x 17m, eight-lane<br />
swimming pool with a viewing<br />
gallery for 250 spectators.<br />
A 20m x 10m training pool with moveable<br />
fl ooor, a 11m x 5m teaching and remedial pool,<br />
a strength and conditioning studio and an<br />
80-station gym will be among the facilities.<br />
Meanwhile, a wetside changing area with<br />
adjoining health suite, a regional-standard,<br />
eight-badminton court sports hall and an<br />
Big Splash, a new campaign to<br />
increase the number of people<br />
swimming and to help<br />
improve the nation’s health,<br />
has been unveiled by British<br />
Swimming and the BBC.<br />
The initiative aims to<br />
encourage the UK’s existing 13<br />
million swimmers and inspire<br />
more to take up the sport, as<br />
well as helping to improve<br />
water safety and save lives.<br />
It is believed that a fi ft h of<br />
adults are unable to swim and<br />
a fi ft h of kids leave primary<br />
school unable to swim – two<br />
statistics that Big Splash aims to change.<br />
British Swimming chief executive David<br />
Sparkes said: “Th e Big Splash is part of our<br />
ongoing drive to increase the participation<br />
in swimming. It’s got fantastic health benefi ts<br />

British Swimming hopes the campaign will help increase participation<br />
and it saves lives. Working with the pools and<br />
the BBC, we expect to see many more people<br />
getting active as we move towards the greatest<br />
sporting event in the world, the Olympic<br />
Games, coming to London next year.”<br />

in a bid to help meet Olympic and Paralympic<br />
legacy goals from the London Games.<br />
Pick Everard will be tasked with developing<br />
a number of national framework deals that will<br />
guide the selection of specialist contractors to<br />
deliver modernisation/expansion schemes.<br />
