First International Enogastronomy Fair<br />

of Fuerteventura<br />

Fuerteventura is full of praises. During this month<br />

of May we can enjoy Italfuerte, the first International<br />

Enogastronomy Fair of Fuerteventura that will take<br />

place between 14 th and 17 th May in the restaurant El<br />

Brasero in Tarajalejo. We met with Adolfo Colnaghi,<br />

member of the Federation of Italian Cooks and<br />

president of the Lemisch Sports’ Club who organises<br />

this Fair and gives us the details of this event.<br />

Adolfo Colnaghi tells us that «Italfuerte aims to be<br />

an enogastronomy encounter as well as a cultural one<br />

and a platform to introduce products from Italy, Fuerteventura<br />

and other countries who accepted the<br />

invitation. During such a special moment, it is fundamental<br />

to give the opportunity to businesses involved<br />

in catering and tourism to get known and demonstrate<br />

the quality of their products. With this in mind, we<br />

thought that we had to include in this event a<br />

gastronomic championship where hotels, restaurants<br />

and chefs of Fuerteventura will participate».<br />

It will of course be extremely beneficial for<br />

Fuerteventura’s image on a worldwide catering level…<br />

«It is exactly what we are aiming for», says Adolfo,<br />

«until now and especially lately some sectors have<br />

been a bit more careless with the quality of raw<br />

materials, whereas in others they are having a battle<br />

for excellence and improvements.<br />

In my professional experience I can say that there<br />

is always a lot to do and it is a hard task, but a<br />

satisfying one.<br />

Regarding foreign products, because they are<br />

unknown on this market, there is a risk to get lower<br />

quality products at prices that do not match. This is<br />

why we saw the necessity to create a consortium of<br />

businesses that would select the Italian Restaurant<br />

suppliers. This allows us to be different and introduce<br />

brands that guarantee quality and competitive<br />

prices».<br />

We asked him what he thought, as an expert in<br />

international catering, of Spanish cooking and he had<br />

no hesitation in saying «I like Spanish cooking. It is<br />

delicious, varied and full of prestige, but in Fuerteventura<br />

there is a danger that it may lose its virtues.<br />

If we are not careful with its peculiarities the foreign<br />

public could be sampling traditional recipes that are<br />

not performed accurately. We should never allow for<br />

a dish of low quality to be served to a customer, either<br />

because of saturation or routine and even less to save<br />

on cost. This is very important in the hotel industry<br />

because there are more and more experts, who we<br />

call gastronomic tourists, and we cannot<br />

underestimate this public. Anything that can<br />

contribute to improving the image of the island is<br />

precious. We all know the importance of word of<br />

mouth».<br />

And, coming back to the theme that interests us<br />

most, we asked him how important Italfuerte will be,<br />

to which he answers that «we will have about twenty<br />

stands where people will be able to sample dishes<br />

from many different places. There will be a market<br />

outside the hall where people will be able to buy wine,<br />

food and other items. We will also enjoy the company<br />

of folkloric groups who will animate some of the key<br />

moments. Furthermore we will have a painting<br />

exhibition from an Italian artist. And then we will<br />

organise an Argentinian barbecue and other<br />

surprises».<br />

During the interview we noticed that he was very<br />

excited by this project… With great excitement he tells<br />

us «Of course. It is a project that brings much hope.<br />

In addition to what it represents on the tourism,<br />

gastronomic and business levels, it also has a role<br />

on a social level, it is important for us because we<br />

will dedicate part of what has been collected during<br />

the fair to social organisations. We are also hoping<br />

that this is the first of many Italfuerte fairs and will<br />

be a stepping stone for enogastronomy in Fuerteventura.<br />
