Introdução / introduction
Muitos serão os percursos, os
olhares, os métodos e abordagens
que o leitor atento encontrará neste
livro. Mas muitos serão também os
pontos de convergência que justificam
e reivindicam a regionalização dos
estudos históricos da estatística. São
todos países outrora integrantes do
mesmo mundo colonial, marcados
pelo aviltante e tão presente dilema
étnico da escravidão africana ou da
servidão indígena. São todos Estados
nacionais de formação tardia, que
tiveram na estatística e nas ciências
importantes ferramentas na elaboração
de suas identidades culturais.
A agenda que se quer construir
com este livro permite romper com
o modelo analítico centro-periferia,
ensejando o estudo histórico dos
intercâmbios e da circulação de idéias
que tiveram lugar no campo estatístico
regional. Sim, um campo estatístico
continental ou subcontinental pode
ser pensado, quando se consegue
superar o marco reduzido das
fronteiras nacionais. O desafio está
lançado. O convite à cooperação
também. Vamos ao livro.

providing an opportunity
for the historical study of exchange
and circulation of ideas occurred in
the regional statistical field. Yes, we
may think of a continental or subcontinental
statistical field, when
we go beyond the reduced mark
of national borders. The challenge
is posed. So is the invitation to
cooperation. Let’s go to the book.
