OPENING REMARKS
The Journal População e Sociedade, has been published by the Centre for
the Study of the Population, Economy and Society since 1995. The first twelve
issues were edited under the Presidency of professor Fernando de Sousa.
After the first sixteen issues published, the new Direction Board of População
e Sociedade decided to introduce some novelties, as, in fact, it was already
beeing done, especially in relation to the international guidelines in use for scientific
publications, e.g. the European Reference Index for the Humanities,
Latindex and Scielo.
This Journal is already indexed in ERIH, quoted by Latindex and it is also
part of the list provided by the Agence d’évaluation de la recherche et de l’enseignement
supérieur (Aeres), being our aim to improve the scientific profile of
this Journal, as well as its international recognition and diffusion. That is why
the present issue already followed the full peer reviewed system and considerable
changes were made in the Editorial and Advisory Boards.
In what concerns the peer reviewed system, each article is evaluated by two
referees, through a double blind refereeing system.
The Editorial Board is, from now on, constituted by ten scholars, some of
them responsible for the research groups of CEPESE and others, namely the
foreign researchers, with strong participation within our activities.
The Advisory Board – composed by thirty members – ten from Portugal
and twenty from other European and American universities – has a diverse constitution
related to each field area of research. Therefore, we take this opportunity
to thank all the colleagues that had accepted our invitation to be a member
of these two Boards; it was a real privilege to the Journal População e
Sociedade to be able to get their collaboration. In this sense, the Journal followed
CEPESE’s research unit policy, which has already a Scientific Advisory
Commission, as demanded by the Portuguese Science Foundation.
With annual publication, this Journal will maintain the option for thematic
issues, and all the articles will include abstracts both in their original language
(Portuguese, English, Italian, French or Spanish) and in English. Keywords are
also a mandatory element of our publication. This Journal also provides information
about the authors, news about CEPESE’s activities, namely its publications,
projects, protocols and scientific encounters, and the present issue introduces
a new item of book reviews. By acceding Cepese’s website (http://cepese.up.pt),
it is also possible to read the Journal on line.
Our next issue, to be published in 2010, twenty years after CEPESE’s constitution,
will present a new design, opening a new phase in the life of this Jour-
