NEW Retail Forum—Spain
September 30, 2010 / Madrid, Spain / Conducted in Spanish
Finding growth in a difficult marketplace
The Spanish retail market, reflecting the economy as a whole, has
experienced slower growth in the grocery markets and a contraction
in non-food categories. Whilst the perception is of an economic crisis
which began in 2008 with an immediate effect on consumption, the
reality has been more complicated. While consumers did sharply reduce
spending in non-grocery categories in late 2008 and early 2009, those
markets have recovered in the past few months. In grocery markets,
despite strong pricing actions and a weak environment, growth continued
in most months. As we approach the second half of 2010 and 2011, there
are again inconsistencies between the shape of the macro-economic
crisis and its effect on certain categories.
This forum will investigate how retailers are coping with this
extraordinary situation, in regards to their financial, marketing and
merchandising strategies. Every retailer in Spain, even Mercadona, is
continuing to adapt their strategies. As 2011 implementation plans get
closer and multi-year plans are finalised this day will allow branded
manufacturers in the market to be better prepared to understand key
market trends, insights and ways that they can adapt their businesses.
Key focus areas will be:
9Channels and retailers performances and forecasts
9Impact of pan-European projects over national negotiations
(Carrefour, AlCampo)
9Mercadona as the current and future benchmark in the market
9Assessing opportunities for value and volume growth
