ELECTION DAY
One could legitimately say that another name for the
First Sunday of Lent might possibly be “Election Day.”
The First Sunday of Lent is, after all, the day when the
Church annually celebrates the Rite of Election.
The Rite of Election is a liturgical celebration
when those who are to be baptized at Easter – the
Catechumens – are chosen (or “elected”) in a formal
way by the Bishop to continue their final weeks of
preparation for the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation
and Eucharist – the sacraments of initiation – which
they will celebrate at the Easter Vigil.
In our diocese, this Rite of Election
takes place at the Cathedral of St.
Thomas More in Arlington. This rite
also includes a Call to Continuing
Conversion in which the Church
promises to pray for those who were
baptized in other Christian churches
and who will be received into the full
communion of the Catholic Church
during the Easter season.
Throughout the season of Lent we will pray fervently
for those who are the Elect and for our Candidates for
full communion in our Catholic Church.
May their journeys of faith inspire us to remember
what a gift it is for us to have celebrated Baptism,
Confirmation and Eucharist and to share in the full
communion of life in our Catholic Church.

DÍA DE ELECCIÓN
Se podría decir, legítimamente, que otro nombre para
el Primer Domingo de Cuaresma podría ser “Día de
Elección.”
Después de todo, el Primer Domingo de Cuaresma es el
día en que la Iglesia tiene su celebración anual del Rito de
Elección.
El Rito de Elección es una celebración litúrgica
donde aquellos que serán bautizados en la Pascua –
los Catecúmenos – son seleccionados (o “elegidos)
formalmente por el Obispo para continuar sus semanas
finales de preparación para los sacramentos del Bautismo,
Confirmación y Eucaristía – los sacramentos de la
Iniciación – que celebrarán en la Vigilia Pascual.
En nuestra diócesis, el Rito de Elección
ocurre en la Catedral de St. Thomas More
en Arlington. Este rito también incluye
una Llamada a la Conversión Contínua
en la cual la Iglesia promete rezar por
aquellos que fueron bautizados en otras
iglesias Cristianas y que serán recibidos
en la plena comunión de la Iglesia
Católica durante el tiempo de Pascua.
Durante todo el tiempo de Cuaresma rezaremos con
fervor por aquellos quienes son los Electos y por nuestros
Candidatos, para su plena comunión en nuestra Iglesia
Católica.
Que sus jornadas de fe nos inspiren a recordar el gran
regalo que significa para nosotros haber celebrado el
Bautismo, Confirmación y Eucaristía y de poder compartir

STEWARDSHIP AND BLESSED MOTHER TERESA
In 1994, Blessed Mother Teresa was the speaker at
the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC.
In that speech she shared this story:
Those who are materially poor can be very
wonderful people. One evening, we picked up four
people from the street. One of them was in a most
terrible condition. I told the Sisters: “You take care
of the other three; I will take care of the one who looks
worse.” So I did for her all that my love can do. She took
hold of my hand, as she said two words: “thank you” –
and she died. I could not help but examine my conscience
before her. “What would I say if I were in her place?” I
would have tried to draw a little attention to myself. I am
hungry, I am dying, I am cold, I am in pain, or something.
But she gave me much more – she gave me her grateful
love. And she died with a smile on her face.

En 1994, la Madre Teresa fué una presentadora en
la Convención Nacional de Oración en Washinton,
DC. En esa ocasión, nos relató lo siguiente:
Los pobres pueden ser personas maravillosas. Una
noche, recogimos a cuatro personas de la calle. Una
de ellas estaba en una condición terrible. Le dije a
las Hermanas: “Ustedes se encargan de las otras tres, yo me
encargo de la que está peor.” Entonces, hice por ella todo
lo que mi amor pudo hacer. Me tomó de la mano, y me dijo
una palabra: “Gracias” - y murió. No pude evitar examinar
mi conciencia luego de lo ocurrido. “¿Qué hubiera dicho
yo si estuviera en su lugar?” Hubiera tratado de atraer un
poquito de atención a mi misma. Tengo hambre, me estoy
muriendo, tengo frío, o algo parecido. Sin embargo ella me
dio mucho más - me dio su amor agradecido. Y falleció con
una sonrisa en su rostro.

VOICE ROUTE 1/MT VERNON YOUTH AGENDA
PROGRESS IN 2012
In 2012, more than 400 youth, parents, school staff
and interfaith church members united to advocate for
improvements and better access to affordable afterschool
programs and recreational facilities along Route
1. GS parishioners have been instrumental in building
leadership in Audubon Estates, a trailer park with over
700 trailer homes and 1,200 youth. Our actions have led
to these achievements:
• Funds of $525,000 identified for
synthetic turf fields at Mount Vernon
and West Potomac High Schools.
(In collaboration with Supervisor
Hyland.)
• Organized soccer registration and
scholarship day for over 90 first-time
youth athletes (in Spanish).
• Worked with Supervisor McKay to improve
local parks to allow thousands of kids access to a
regulation field close to home. (Muddy Hole and
Mount Vernon Woods)
• Met with Costco representatives and received
commitment to tour and support low-income
neighborhoods surrounding their site.

AGENDA DE JÓVENES DE VOICE RUTA 1/MT VERNON
AVANCES EN EL 2012
Durante el año pasado, más de 400 jóvenes, padres,
miembres de las escuelas y de congregaciones
interreligiosas se reunieron para presionar por mejor
acceso a programas recreativas después
de clase en la Ruta 1. Los feligreses de El
Buen Pastor han sido claves para formar el
liderazgo en Audubon Estates, un vecindario
con más de 700 trailers y 1,200 jóvenes.
Nuestras acciones resultaron en lo siguiente:
• Se recaudaron los primeros $525,000 en
colaboración con el Supervisor Hyland para
canchas sintéticas en MVHS y WPHS.
• Se organizó un día de inscripción y becas
para que más de 90 jóvenes ganaran acceso a la Liga
de Fútbol LMVSC.
• Trabajando con el Supervisor McKay se logró mejorar
el Muddy Hole Park y Mount Vernon Woods Park para
permitir el acceso a miles de niños a una cancha con
medidas reglamentarias cerca de sus hogares.
• Se logró organizar una reunión con representantes de
Costco, quienes se han comprometido a dar apoyo al
vecindario de Audobon.

GRUPO DE ORACIÓN
CAMBIO DE HORA DURANTE LA CUARESMA
Durante la Cuaresma el Grupo de Oración comenzará a
las 8:00pm por las Reflexiones del Viacrucis (en inglés y
español). Les invitamos a venir a las 7:30pm para iniciar
su tiempo con esta reflexión cuaresmal. La asamblea del

RELOJES VIVIENTES DE LA PASIÓN

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL UPDATE
The Parish Pastoral Council met last month for the first
time under their new charter. The PPC discussed the
upcoming 50th Anniversary of the founding of Good
Shepherd (2015), the International Festival scheduled for
September 2, and draft guidelines for parish operations.
The council will meet again in March. The PPC serves as
a representative body of all the parish faithful under the
leadership of Father Tom. The members of the PPC are:

Este Consejo se reunió el mes pasado por la primera
vez bajo su nueva constitución. El PPC trató sobre la
próxima celebración del 50º Aniversario de la Fundación
de El Buen Pastor (2015), el Festival Internacional
programado para el 2 de septiembre, y también guías
para las operaciones parroquiales. El equipo se reunirá de
nuevo en marzo. El PPC presta servicio como un cuerpo

Each age group will present a key element of Lenten
observance:
• prayer – expressed through a
presentation of the Stations of the Cross
• fasting – expressed through a light soup
supper
• almsgiving – expressed through a
presentation of a social justice cause

SACRAMENTAL EMERGENCY
If you have a sacramental emergency and need a priest, call
703-780-4055, press 1 (English) or 2 (Spanish). After office
hours, this option directs you to an answering service. The service
will contact a priest.
FUNERALS
If you have lost a loved one and are seeking assistance, please
contact the Parish Office to plan the funeral liturgy. Our Funeral
Planners and Circle of Caring Ministry are here to support
families in their time of need.
