We examine the condition of vanishing Gaussian curvature for the graphs of piecewiselinear<br />

functions. This is the simplest <strong>de</strong>parture from the case of smooth surfaces. That<br />

however involves multiplication of distributions.<br />

A brief exposition of that topic, in the framework of the Colombeau algebras, is<br />

presented as well.<br />

Unboun<strong>de</strong>d hypercyclic operators<br />

An operator (linear transformation) from a Banach space into itself is hypercyclic if<br />

there is a vector whose orbit un<strong>de</strong>r the operator is <strong>de</strong>nse in the space. The structure<br />

of hypercyclic boun<strong>de</strong>d operators has been intensely studied in the last twenty years.<br />

Among the highlights is Ansari’s result that says that powers of these operators are<br />

also hypercyclic. We give an example which shows that this in not necessarily the case<br />

if the operator is unboun<strong>de</strong>d. We also exibit an unboun<strong>de</strong>d Hilbert space operator<br />

for which every non-zero vector is hypercyclic.<br />

Bayesian Mapping of Multiple Quantitative Trait Loci<br />

Many agronomic traits in plants are classified as quantitative in nature, i.e., the<br />

observed phenotype is the joint result of the effects of a number of genetic and environmental<br />

factors. The genetics of quantitative traits are studied through estimating<br />

the effects of the genes contributing to the traits as well as by <strong>de</strong>termining their location<br />

in the genome. Once a molecular location is <strong>de</strong>termined for the genes, they<br />

are called quantitative trait loci (QTL). Knowledge about these loci assists in the<br />

selection of superior genotypes in a population for trait improvement (e.g. yield and<br />

disease resistance in crops). A statistical method for the simultaneous estimation of<br />

the locations and effects of QTL in a backcross population will be presented. The<br />

posterior distribution of the QTL effects along the genome using a Gibbs sampler is<br />

obtained. This mo<strong>de</strong>l was able to effectively <strong>de</strong>termine QTL locations and effects in<br />

simulated data as well as in an experimental data set.<br />
