Rico, Burger King, El Nuevo Día, Wal-Mart
Puerto Rico, Fiddler, González & Rodríguez,
Medical Card System, St. James Security,
Fundación Ángel Ramos, Destilería Serrallés,
Diego Suárez, Goya de Puerto Rico, Inc.,
Pfizer, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Bermúdez
& Longo y De la Cruz & Asociados, entre
otras empresas e individuos. Además,
agradecemos a todos nuestros socios
individuales, familiares, Mecenas, Gran
Mecenas y Medici, entidades, corporaciones
Puerto Rico. El primer evento público que
allí se realizó se vio engalanado con
la presencia de imágenes de las salas
de la institución, motivando a quienes
nos apoyan financieramente a acercarse
y sentirse aún más orgullosos de su
Museo.
Continuando con nuestra vocación de
servicio, las exhibiciones temporeras
estuvieron dirigidas a reforzar nuestros
museo. En colaboración con el Museo
Franz Mayer de la Ciudad de México,
presentamos La memoria en el papel:
Libros y estampas de la colección
Franz Mayer, utilizando además obras
de nuestro acervo de grandes maestros
europeos.
José Antonio Torres Martinó, destacado
ponceño y maestro de varias
generaciones de artistas en Puerto
Rico, fue motivo de una exhibición
homenaje: Voz de varios registros.
Su calidad y reconocimiento, no sólo
de los ponceños, sino de todo Puerto
Rico, fue evidenciada y demostrada
en la gran afluencia de público que
la visitó.
Para cerrar el año, Frida Kahlo y
sus mundos mostró la capacidad de
organización de nuestra institución,
consumando un éxito de visita, pero
aportando un acercamiento académico
diferente a una artista cuya vida y calidad
la han convertido en figura de culto
en nuestros días. La gran envergadura
de este proyecto nos permitió renovar
los sistemas electrónicos de seguridad
y control de las salas de exhibiciones
temporeras.
Abriendo nuevos caminos, Paintant-
Documenta 11, del argentino Fabián
Marcaccio, fue una gran sorpresa para
todos, no sólo por sus extraordinarias
dimensiones que cubrieron todo lo
largo de la fachada superior, sino por
su desafiante lenguaje, que atrajo a un
público nuevo, captado por la vitalidad
del arte contemporáneo.
El Departamento de Curaduría también
adquirió una “nueva luz” bajo la dirección
de Cheryl Hartup, nueva curadora en jefe,
quien desde julio pasado se ha encargado
de reenfocarlo y crecerlo reclutando
personal para las tareas de investigación,
organización de exhibiciones y enlace con la
comunidad.
auto evaluación preparatoria al Institute of
• Hon. Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, Gobernador
del Estado Libre Asociado de P.R. y
la Primera Dama Luisa Gándara de
su apreciación por el arte, y fueron
informados de nuestros planes de
crecimiento y desarrollo en beneficio del
amplio público que nos visita.
El 2005 concluyó en un momento
vibrante de entusiasmo, con el museo
lleno de visitantes, quizá como mucho
tiempo atrás no se veía. Su alegría y
entusiasmo nos motiva aún más a seguir
preparándonos para ser mejores en
nuestra misión de atender y proporcionar
nuevas experiencias interpretativas del
arte y de la cultura para todos.
It is with great pleasure that we submit
the 2005 annual report for the Museo
de Arte de Ponce (MAP by its Spanish
acronym), which reflects the dedication
and professionalism of all who work
here, as well as the deep commitment
shown to collectively improve our
professional practices and responsible,
close relationship with our community
and all those who visit us.
During this period, we have begun the
process of devising our strategic plan
that will guide us and direct our actions
in the years to come. Although the
task had not yet been completed by
December 2005, we are well aware that
our institution is undergoing a process of
preparations and will continue on others
of transitions and relaunching. This new
stage of preparations has been marked by
the end of the first phase of renovations
on our architectural jewel, carried out by
Architect Edward Durell Stone, in which
the roof was resealed and the exterior
façade was refurbished. In addition,
state-of-the-art skylights were installed
to bring in a properly filtered “new light”
that allows for a better appreciation of
the works of art while protecting them
from harmful ultraviolet rays and the
threat of hurricanes. The year 2005 was
marked by severe atmospheric events
that caused damage to sister museum
institutions, thereby reaffirming our need
to prevent harm by replacing these
architectural elements.
Our capital campaign, which makes
these improvements possible, remains on
a steady course and has succeeded in
raising 40% of the estimated $15 million
needed to date. A special note of gratitude
is extended to all our sponsors: Banco
Popular de Puerto Rico, Burger King, El
Nuevo Día, Wal-Mart Puerto Rico, Fiddler,
González & Rodríguez, Medical Card
System, St. James Security, Fundación
Ángel Ramos, Destilería Serrallés, Diego
Suárez, Goya de Puerto Rico, Inc., Pfizer,
PricewaterhouseCoopers, Bermúdez &
Longo, and De la Cruz & Asociados, among
other companies and individuals. We are
also grateful to our individual members,
relatives, Mecenas, Gran Mecenas and
Medici sponsors, companies, corporations,
and foundations for collaborating by
sending their yearly contributions for the
Museum’s operations.
Our new skylights provided the inspiration
for the theme of our XXIV Gala, Nueva
Luz, which for the first time was held
at the recently inaugurated Puerto Rico
Convention Center. The first public event
to be held there was bedecked with
images from the museum’s galleries,
inspiring our sponsors to get up close
and feel even prouder of their Museum.
In keeping with our dedication to service,
our temporary exhibitions were aimed at
strengthening our ties with the community
as well as presenting and interpreting our
collections. This “new light” has served as
inspiration, motivating us to reinterpret all of
our museum galleries. In collaboration with
the Museo Franz Mayer in Mexico City, we
presented La memoria en el papel: Libros
y estampas de la colección Franz Mayer,
adding works from our Great European
Masters collection.
José Antonio Torres Martinó, a
distinguished artist from Ponce and
teacher of many generations of Puerto
Rican artists, was paid homage in the
exhibition Voz de varios registros. His
caliber and recognition, not just from
the people of Ponce but also from all
over Puerto Rico, were made evident and
demonstrated by the throngs of visitors
to this exhibition.
To cap things off, the exhibition Frida
Kahlo y sus mundos not only proved
our ability to organize such an event,
marked by round success in visits, but
also allowed for a unique academic
approach in line with the quality and life
of an artist who has become a cult figure
in modern times. The vast scope of this
project called for an upgrade of our
electronic security and controls systems
in the temporary exhibition galleries.
Paving new ground, Argentine artist Fabián
Marcaccio’s Paintant-Documenta 11 was
a surprise for all, not only because of
its extraordinary size, which took up the
entire second-floor façade, but also due
to its defiant language, which attracted a
new kind of public keen on sharing the
vitality of contemporary art.
The Curatorial Division also saw “new
light” under the leadership of Cheryl
Hartup, new Curator in Chief, who since
last July has been refocusing and growing
it by recruiting new staff members to
be responsible for research, exhibition
organization, and community outreach
duties. Her experience and professionalism
have been quickly asserted and noted in
the temporary exhibitions as well as in
the permanent collections.
As part of getting ready for the eventual
closing of the exhibits building, carried
out by Durell Stone, the first phase of
the reaccreditation process with the
American Association of Museum was
completed with the preliminary selfevaluation
submitted to the Institute of
Museum and Library Services (IMLS),
which will be followed up by a visit in
2006 from one of its evaluators, and
ending with the final self-evaluation in
November.
During 2005, we received many
distinguished visitors, among them:
• Hon. Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, Governor
of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico
and the First Lady Luisa Gándara de
Acevedo Vilá
• Dr. Edward Sullivan, Dean of Humanities,
New York University
• Francisco Brines and Luis Antonio de
Villena, poets, Spain
• Dr. James Welu, Director, Worcester
• Matt and Ellen Simmons, Chairs
esfuerzo ambicioso para la institución.
Cada exhibición complementó tres de
las colecciones más importantes del
estampas de la colección Franz
Mayer
mismas mostraban temas similares y
obras de varios artistas como Albrecht
Dürer, Lucas Cranach “el Viejo”,
Anthony Van Dyck, Pieter Brueghel,
Rembrandt van Rijn, Lucas van Leyden
y otros artistas europeos de gran
renombre. Los grabados seleccionados
exploraban el retrato histórico, la
alegoría, escenas de la vida cotidiana,
temas religiosos y la naturaleza.
Asimismo, se exhibieron las herramientas
que los artistas usaban para crear los
grabados y material didáctico que
explicaba los retos que enfrentaban
al hacer este tipo de trabajo. Para
documentar esta exhibición, el MAP
publicó un catálogo: La memoria en
el papel: Libros y estampas de la
colección Franz Mayer. La exhibición
coincidió con la Trienal Poligráfica de
Con más de cien obras que incluían
pinturas, grabados, dibujos e ilustraciones,
estudiante en Europa y Estados Unidos;
Tamayo, Adolfo Best Maugard y
Exhibiciones internacionales
Exhibitions
The Curatorial Department coordinated
three exhibitions in 2005 that were
ambitious endeavors for the institution.
Each exhibition complemented one of
the three strengths of the museum’s
permanent art collection: European,
Latin American, and Puerto Rican.
La memoria en el papel: Libros y
estampas de la colección Franz
Mayer
February 12 – June 12, 2005
This exhibition presented nearly one
hundred European engravings and
books, such as El molino by Antoni
Waterloo, La Santa Faz llevada por
un ángel by Albrecht Dürer, Atlantis
majoris by Atlas mayor, 1st. Edition,
and La historia de Job by Heinrich
Quentell, printed from the XV to the
XVIII centuries from the Franz Mayer
collection in Mexico City. Integrated
into the installation were paintings
and sculptures from the Museo de
Arte de Ponce’s collection depicting
similar subjects and works by artists
like, Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach,
“the Elder”, Anthony Van Dyck, Pieter
Brueghel, Rembrandt van Rijn, Lucas van
Leyden, and other renowned European
artists. The selection of engravings
explored such themes as historical
portraits, allegories, scenes from social
life, religious subjects, and nature.
21
Also on view were the tools artists
used to make engravings and other
didactic materials that explained the
challenges this medium presented to
the artist. In order to document this
exhibition, the MAP published a catalog:
La memoria en el papel: Libros y
estampas de la colección Franz Mayer,
which coincided with San Juan city’s
Poligraphic Engraving Triennial.
José Antonio Torres Martinó: Voz
de varios registros
July 9 – October 10, 2005
With more than a hundred works including
paintings, engravings, drawings, and
illustrations, this exhibition celebrated
one of the most important artists of
the ’50s generation.
Professor Margarita Fernández Zavala
was the curator of this retrospective,
which presented the artist’s work in
three sections: Años formativos y voz
colectiva (1940-1964), which explored
the artist’s early years as a student
in Europe and North America; La forja
de una voz propia (1964-1980), which
presented the murals, illustrations, and
engravings he made after settling in San
Juan; and Ecos de Ponce (1980-2003),
which featured paintings by the artist
that recall the landscape surrounding
Torres Martinó’s native Ponce.
Frida Kahlo y sus mundos
November 19, 2005 – March 26, 2006
The exhibition Frida Kahlo y sus
mundos, organized by the Museo de
Arte de Ponce, presented a unique
focus on the art of one of the most
significant artists of the twentieth
century. The exhibition featured 285
objects and examined Kahlo’s work
in light of popular sources, such as
XIX and early XX centuries painting,
photography, popular art, and pre-
Hispanic artifacts. In addition, the
exhibition placed the artist in the
context of the transcendental artistic
renaissance that took place in postrevolution
Mexico.
At the core of Frida Kahlo y sus
mundos were fifty paintings, drawings,
engravings, and watercolors Kahlo
executed from 1925 to 1951. These
were presented along with paintings
and engravings from the XVIII to XIX
centuries that most likely inspired Kahlo,
as well as works by her colleagues—
Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Adolfo
Best Maugard, and Nickolas Muray, to
name a few.
This exhibition was possible thanks to
the generosity of private collectors and
public institutions that loaned works to
the exhibition among them the Museo
Soumaya, Mexico, Museo de Arte de
Tlaxcala, Mexico, and the San Diego
22
Museum of Art Museum. Frida Kahlo y
sus mundos was curated by Juan Rafael
Coronel Rivera, Nadia Ugalde Gómez,
and MAP Director, Agustín Arteaga,
who also wrote some of the text that
are included in the bilingual catalogue
that accompanied the exhibitions.
Family Day on Three Kings Day.
Cultural Activities
The cultural activities support itinerant
exhibitions and the permanent collection of
the Museo de Arte de Ponce. Education is
present in all the initiatives we coordinate,
from more formal events such as
conferences, workshops, and movie-forums
to concerts.
We started the year with the Family
Day on Three Kings Day. The Museum
received 1,699 visitors, of which 727
were children, who came to participate
in an extraordinary educational
program and, of course, to greet with
the characters that impersonate the
Three Kings from Juana Díaz.
In February, we celebrated the opening
of the exhibition La memoria en el papel:
Libros y estampas de la colección Franz
Mayer. Later this month, we had an
open house to celebrate the birthday
of the Museum’s founder, Don Luis A.
Ferré, of which 452 visitors took part.
We coordinate activities for people of
all ages. One example was a gathering
of university students, professors
and artists, such as Arnaldo Roche
Rabell, Charles Juhasz y Antonio
Martorell at the Museum’s Balconies,
for a discussion on Fabián Marcaccio’s
mural. Other events included nine
movie-forums, which were presented
by cinematographer José Artemio
Torres, all relating to exhibitions held
at the museum, such as La memoria
colección Franz Mayer and Frida Kahlo
y sus mundos, among others.
We also celebrated Family Sundays,
which counted with the participation of
renowned artist Antonio Martorell. These
events were an excellent alternative to
enjoy and learn about art with the
family.
Music, a much expected aspect of
our cultural program, counted with
the presentation of the Classical Music
23
Season with the collaboration of the
Ponce Musical Foundation. It consisted
of 12 concerts, which were presented
in two sessions, the second one being
distinguished by the Series of Great
Pianists, which included the participation
of Gerardo Teissoniere, Jerome Rose,
Henry Hutchinson, and the Ciompi Quartet
at Duke University, among others.
The Museum’s Education Department is
an important link in the development of
cultural activities, because they promote
intellectual knowledge through art and
culture. Our purpose is to bring in public
in order to break barriers through the
different manifestations of art. Taking
this into consideration, Ana Margarita
Hernández, Director of Education, offered
three Art Appreciation Workshops directed
for a group of elderly.
At the end of 2005, the exhibitions of
Master José Antonio Torres Martinó:
Voz de varios registros and Frida Kahlo
y sus mundos were central to complete
the year with 109 cultural, educational,
and private activities, with a total of
13,912 participants.
Serving the Public
The Curatorial Department serves the
public with information on the MAP’s
permanent collection and provides
scholars with images for reproduction
in academic publications. We received
106 requests came from all parts of the
world—Hungary, Japan, Italy, Mexico,
England, Spain, and the United States,
to name a few countries.
In addition, in October the Curatorial
Department received Dr. Roswitha
Juffinger, Director of Residenzgalerie
in Salzburg, Austria, who came to
investigate some works of art in the
MAP’s collection.
Donations
The Museo de Arte de Ponce has a history
of acknowledging Puerto Rican artists
through acquisitions and exhibitions of
their works. In 2005, the MAP received
the painting La última montaña (2005) by
Jorge Zeno and Tem (2004) by Carmelo
Sobrino. Both are hymns to the landscape
of Puerto Rico.
La última montaña is a large triptych
of El Yunque rain forest. This work is
part of a series that expresses the
artist’s concern for the preservation of
the mountain’s fragile ecosystem. With
thin washes of paint that drip down
the canvas, Zeno captures the light
and atmosphere of this sacred site.
The effect is similar to depictions of
mountains in Chinese scroll paintings
during the Song Dynasty (A.D. 907-
1279), in which the very soul of the
mountain is the subject of the work. In
La última montaña, Zeno captures the
solemnity and power of the mountain
and the softness of a misty veil.
24
In 1994, Don Luis A. Ferré first
acquired a painting by Zeno for the
Museum’s collection, and in 2000, Zeno
had an exhibition at the MAP titled
Semilla abierta. Jorge Zeno (b. 1956),
painter, sculptor, and engraver, has
been recognized by his works through
exhibitions in museums and galleries,
and has been honored with awards. He
participated in the project of urban art
and his sculptures may be appreciated
in front of the Catholic Cathedral in
Old San Juan.
The MAP acquired two paintings by
Sobrino in 1988 and now Tem is part
of its permanent collection. This work
was on view in the artist’s exhibition
at the Museum in 2004-2005 titled
Horizontes (musarañas). Tem is an
energy field, an atmospheric view of
Puerto Rico’s marine horizon. The
foreground is dense with calligraphic
gestures, glyphs, a sort of abstract
poetry that dissolves into particles of
air and light. Sobrino applies layers
of paint that seem to erase their own
marks, thereby creating a harmonious
and luminous infinity.
Carmelo Sobrino (b. 1948), painter
and engraver, began his career making
signs and doing calligraphy in his
hometown, Manatí. In the 1960s, he
studied art with a number of Puerto
Rico’s most respected artists. He co
founded engraving workshops and
taught at the Liga de Estudiantes de
Arte de San Juan, Casa Candina, and
the Universidad del Turabo in Caguas.
He was recently commissioned to
create several murals in the lobby of
the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico and
on the foyer’s ceiling at the Teatro
Taboas in Manatí.
The MAP is grateful to Jorge Zeno and
Carmelo Sobrino for their generosity
in donating, through Galería Petrus,
significant works that celebrate an
important period in their careers.
International Exhibitions
amor by Frederick Sandys and La huida
de un hereje by John Everet Millais
to the exhibition Artist as Narrator:
Nineteenth Century Narrative Art in
England and France that took place in
the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. The
exhibition explored the influence the
French academy had on British artists
with classical style such as Lawrence
Alma-Tadema, Frederick Leighton, and
Eduard Poynter.
Our Spanish gallery enjoyed an
unprecedented international exposure
with the loan of four works that are
permanently exhibited in this gallery.
Repartiendo rancho (ca. 1640) by
Antonio de Puga (1602-1648) and Dos
niños con calabazas (ca. 1682) by
Pedro Núñez Villavicencio (1644-1648)
were part of the exhibition El mundo
25
que vivió Cervantes organized by the
Sociedad Estatal de Conmemoraciones
Culturales in Madrid. The exhibition’s
goal was to reconstruct the historical
period of the end of the XVI century
and the beginning of the XVII century,
recreating the times of Cervantes and
of the contemporaries that inspired
him to write El Quijote.
The Retrato de Martín Zapater by
Francisco de Goya y Lucientes
was part of an exhibition on Goya
coordinated by the Museo Nacional de
Arte (MUNAL by its Spanish acronym),
Mexico City. The exhibition’s objective
was to present for the first time ever
works that demonstrate the creative
process of this renowned Spanish artist
throughout his career. The exhibition’s
second venue in 2006 will be the San
Diego Museum of Art.
San Francisco en meditación con el
hermano Leo (1605) by Domenikos
Theotokopoulos “el Greco” was exhibited
at the Museo de Arte de Tlaxcala in
Mexico.
Local Exhibitions Outside the MAP
We ended the year with our traditional
Christmas exhibition at the Senatorial
Gallery at the Puerto Rico Senate titled:
Other Loans
The Museum counts with a specific
works of art collection for loan of
which we currently have 81 in the
facilities of our sponsors and others
in cultural institutions such as our and
the Fundación Luis A. Ferré offices, the
Centro de Bellas Artes de Guaynabo,
and government offices.
Educational Programs & Initiatives
Educación
En el 2005, el Departamento de Educación
desarrolló una serie de programas
y actividades que contribuyeron a
resaltar la importancia de las artes
como parte integral de la educación de
los estudiantes, maestros y el público
general. Entre los proyectos organizados
se destaca Futuros Guías del MAP, el
cual tuvo un resultado muy positivo
en los estudiantes de nivel elemental,
intermedio y superior, sus padres y
maestros.
Además, se celebró el acostumbrado
campamento de verano del museo que
llevó por título: Un salto de diversión
a Europa, al igual que varios talleres
educativos y el primer Simposio
Internacional de Crítica de Arte, bajo
el tema: Crítica de arte: ¿Quién la
escribe ¿Quién la lee ¿A quién le
importa
Actividades generales: Coordinamos
todos los ofrecimientos educativos para
las siguientes celebraciones:
Desarrollo
marzo. El sello llevaba impreso la obra
Giannina, Niña de la Cuerda (1965) del
artista Osiris Delgado Mercado.
$15 millones. Los recaudos recibidos a
la fecha son de $4,997,580, y a estos se
suman compromisos de $1,253,795, para
un total de $6,251,375.
Development
The Museo de Arte de Ponce’s Department
of Development directs its fundraising
efforts through the implementation of
various strategies that contribute to raise
the money necessary to strengthen the
Museums’ different divisions. Among these
are various alternatives in which individuals
and corporations may collaborate, such
as the different membership categories,
sponsorship for temporary, educational,
and cultural exhibitions, and other areas
that require it. We also make requests for
40
proposals for local and federal funding for
the operational budget and the Capital
Campaign for the Museum’s renovation
and expansion. We also organize special
events such as the Annual Gala.
Four special events were held throughout
the year, which raised funds for the
Museum’s operational fund and the Capital
Campaign. The first activity, El arte del buen
comer, raised money for the operational
fund. It was held in October with a very
interesting array of culinary offerings by
chefs of locally renowned restaurants. In
December, the MAP held its XXIV Gala at
the new Puerto Rico Convention Center,
under the theme Nueva Luz. The annual
gala is the institution’s most important
fundraiser. This year’s net revenues were
$32,000 and $515,308 respectively for
these two special events.
As part of our fundraising efforts for the
Capital Campaign, we celebrated two
activities, the first being the sale of stamps
at Burger King restaurants throughout the
Island during March. The stamp bore the
painting Giannina, Niña de la Cuerda (1965)
by Osiris Delgado Mercado. The second
activity was held in April with Wal-Mart’s
Festival de la Vid. This event was held at
the Paseo de la Princesa in Old San Juan.
Guests enjoyed wine and food tasting and
music in a pleasant and friendly ambience.
The funds raised at these activities totaled
$18,524 and $56,750 respectively.
The annual recognition of our sponsors
was held during the month of August at
the Museum with a family day, where the
sponsors took part in workshops designed
for them and their families. As part of
the workshops, the artist Carmelo Sobrino
contributed to the event by making
musarañas. This event aimed to recognize
the collaboration consistently received
either from individuals or corporations
belonging to Mecenas, Gran Mecenas, and
Círculo Medici. During this event, we also
recognized new sponsors, both individuals
and corporations.
Our continuous fundraising efforts for
the Capital Campaign are aimed toward
permanent improvements to the building and
expansion of our institution. Last year, the
first phase was completed, which included
sealing (waterproofing) the Museum’s roof,
the replacement of the skylights, and the
construction of a new façade. The Capital
Campaign’s goal is to raise $15 million.
The funds raised to date are $4,997,580,
with additional pledges of $1,253,795, for
a total of $6,251,375.
Custodiando y conservando
contratiempos.
Respecto al movimiento y seguridad
de las obras que son solicitadas
internacionalmente, colaboramos con la
custodia y seguridad del Retrato de Martín
Zapater de Francisco de Goya y Lucientes,
el cual llevamos al Museo Nacional de
Arte en la Ciudad de México. Al igual,
custodiamos la pintura El secuestro de
Jesús de Monsú Desiderio desde el Museo
de Coeur d’Or en Metz, Francia. Estos
viajes a otros museos representan una rica
experiencia para el personal del Museo ya
que permite la colaboración con colegas
de variadas culturas y la experimentación
de cerca con sus ambientes de trabajo.
Estos logros no hubiesen sido posibles sin
la entrega y arduo trabajo del personal
de nuestro Laboratorio de Conservación,
integrado por Ángel D. Santiago-Torres
“Archie”, Subdirector y Conservador de
Guarding and Conserving
Art for Its Enjoyment
As 2005 came to an end, we felt a
great sense of satisfaction for the many
achievements obtained throughout the
year. The workload required a close
collaboration among the Curatorial,
Registrar, and Conservation Laboratory
Departments and the staff from Exhibition
Preparations. It was definitely a year of
renewal, not only for the physical structure
of the Museum, but also for its public
outreach programs, relevant cultural
activities, and extraordinary events.
This is prove that the Museum has entered
a phase of profound changes that has
brought on an evolution whose impact has
been felt throughout our institution.
We began the year by designing and
manufacturing climate-controlled showcases
for the old books in the temporary
The
responsibility of evaluating the condition
of all the exhibit pieces was shared with
Víctor Calafell, Curator of Works of Art
on Paper from the Museo Franz Mayer
in Mexico City, who also helped to stage
the exhibition. It is important to mention
that this exhibition taught our community
that collecting art on paper is wonderful
and that there is no need to fear that the
paper will deteriorate, thereby making the
work of art disappear.
48
Just as Mr. Mayer had the foresight to
collect engravings from the great masters,
which we can still enjoy today, so should
we follow in his example and debunk false
beliefs, thus supporting our local graphic
artists. To achieve this, it would behoove us
to acquire basic knowledge of conservation
techniques and to ensure that these works
are properly framed in order to be able to
enjoy them for centuries.
Another project was the preparation of
the oil paintings by artist José Antonio
Torres Martinó for the much awaited
exhibition José Antonio Torres Martinó:
Voz de varios registros. The Museum
collaborated in the preservation of
this Puerto Rican artistic patrimony
through the conservation personnel by
restoring several pieces, such as Niños
bebiendo agua de coco, owned by the
Museo de Historia, Antropología y Arte
of the Universidad de Puerto Rico, Río
Piedras Campus; Paisaje en blanco from
a private collector; and Mater atómica
from the artist’s private collection.
This project has also afforded us
the opportunity to diversify services
by acquiring additional woodworking
equipment, which enabled us to
manufacture, in house, over 40 frames
for the works on paper.
During the preliminary preparations
for the exhibition Frida Kahlo y sus
mundos, we worked closely with curators,
conservationists, and registrars from
museums in the United States as well
as Mexico. We worked hand-in-hand with
the Curator of Paper, María del Pilar
Lereño, from Museo Soumaya, Mexico,
DF, in the unpacking, study, and mounting
of Diego Rivera’s stencils for the mural
entitled Pesadilla de guerra, sueño de paz
(destroyed). In fact, the design of the wall
where it was to be mounted presented a
challenge for our Sculpture Conservation
Specialist, Ángel D. Santiago, since it was
not high enough. To solve this, a modular
wall was designed with a concave curve
eight feet in diameter in the lower section,
which was manufactured by our personnel
in charge of exhibition preparations.
Our annual work plan for the permanent
collections was being completed
concurrently with the itinerant exhibitions.
During 2005, we provided preventive or
restorative treatments to 76 works of
art, including paintings, sculptures, period
frames, and tridimensional objects. Among
these were the large format paintings,
along with their frames, Santa Rosalía
intercediendo por la ciudad de Palermo
by Anthony Van Dyck and Retrato de
Lady Stanhope by Tilly Kettle; the marble
sculptures Crouching Venus by Michael
Louis Mecier and Niño Jesús frente a los
doctores by François Raoul Larche; and
the bronze of Reina Isabel II de Castilla by
César Montaña.
Regarding private collections conservation
services, we did an extraordinary job by
Nuestra Santísima Señora de Monterrey- Before restoration
Nuestra Santísima Señora de Monterrey- After restoration
Pamela Calderón during the study of
Nuestra Santísima Señora de Monterrey
fulfilling numerous requests for restorations
on a considerable amount of works, which
raised a respectable amount of funds for
the Museum’s general operations. Among
the important restoration projects were
20 works by Marcos Irizarry belonging to
the UPR, Mayagüez Campus, collections;
two oil paintings by Amelia Peláez of the
Bacardi Corporation; one 19th Century
English School marine landscape and its
frame belonging to Trigo Corporation; and
an oil painting by Cristóbal Ruiz from the
Ferré Rangel collections.
Two interns from the Escuela de Artes
Plásticas de San Juan, Pamela Calderón
and Mario Ferrer, joined us for the summer.
They displayed their skill and knowledge
while working on the conservation of
works of art under the strict planning and
supervision of the conservation personnel.
In their own words, their internship and
contact with the Museum’s personnel
opened an unknown window to the
admirable yet colossal work of a museum
amidst a materialistic, technological, and
changing world.
During the replacement phase of the
seven skylights on the Museum’s second
floor, the conservation personnel was
vigilant to ensure the safety of the
collections. After reaching a consensus
among the various departments, a
strategy of temporarily moving and
storing works of art was implemented for
the galleries on the second floor, which
resulted in a successful and uneventful
transfer.
Regarding the transportation and safety
of the works that are requested on an
international level, we collaborated with the
custody and safety of Retrato de Martín
Zapater by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes,
which we escorted to the Museo Nacional
de Arte in Mexico City. We also escorted
the painting El secuestro de Jesús by Monsú
Desiderio from the Coeur d’Or Museum in
Metz, France. These trips to other museums
represent an enriching experience for the
Museum’s personnel since it allows for a
collaboration with colleagues from various
cultures and for close experimentation with
their work environments.
These achievements would not have been
possible without the commitment and
hard work of the personnel from our
Conservation Laboratory, comprised of
Ángel D. Santiago-Torres “Archie”, Assistant
Director and Conservator of Sculptures
and Tridimensional Objects; John Vargas,
Assistant in both departments and
cabinetmaker; Patricia Aguirre, Professional
Services, Department of Paintings; and Isabel
Martínez, Professional Services, Department
of Sculptures and Tridimensional Objects.
We are especially grateful to the students
Pamela Calderón and Mario Ferrer for their
time, assistance, and dedication during the
month of July 2005.
Thomas Seddon.
exhibición Pre-Raphaelite Vision: Truth to
exhibición Artist as Narrator: Nineteenth
Century Narrative Art in England and
France.
Repartiendo rancho de Antonio de Puga
y Dos niños con calabazas de Pedro
Núñez Villavicencio formaron parte de la
muestra El mundo que vivió Cervantes,
organizada por la Sociedad Estatal de
Conmemoraciones Culturales en Madrid, la
cual fue inaugurada con la presencia de
los Reyes de España.
El Retrato de Martín Zapater de Francisco
de Goya y Lucientes salió en préstamo
al Museo Nacional de Arte. El proyecto
tuvo como objetivo presentar por primera
55
segunda sede el San Diego Museum of
Art.
56
Otros proyectos
Durante este año, continuamos con la
toma de fotos profesionales de las obras
de la colección permanente del Museo,
que serán incluidas en la publicación de
la tercera edición del catálogo de nuestra
colección. Las mismas estuvieron a cargo
del señor Johnny Betancourt.
Como parte del proyecto de renovación y
expansión del museo, nos reunimos con
varias compañías de diseño de equipo
para depósitos de obras de arte, para
evaluar y determinar el equipo que será
necesario para albergar nuestra colección
en el nuevo edificio del Museo. También
visitamos algunos depósitos de obras
del Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva
York (MOMA por sus siglas en inglés)
para constatar el uso, manejo, ventajas y
desventajas de los equipos que nos han
sido recomendados.
Un proyecto muy importante realizado
en conjunto con el equipo de trabajo
en las salas del Museo, aprovechando que
fuera necesario retirarlas de sus espacios
en sustituir los cartones con ácido que
protegían la parte posterior de las obras
Registrar
The year 2005 was one of great challenges
and we had the opportunity to discover new
tools that allowed us to grow professionally
as well as to reinforce our relationship as
a working team. The project Frida Kahlo
y sus mundos was, without a doubt, the
most complex exhibition that has ever
been done in the history of our institution,
a project organized in unison to other
minor, yet no less important projects.
Coordination of International
Shipments
The Registrar Department was in charge of
coordinating five international shipments of
works of art from the permanent collection
57
that were part of renowned exhibitions this
year.
The Museo de Arte de Ponce coordinated
the return of Lehon from Mont Parnasse by
Thomas Seddon. To this end, we traveled
to Madrid to verify the condition of the
painting and bring it back to the Museum.
The painting was on loan at the Fundación
La Caixa, the last venue of the exhibition
titled Pre-Raphaelite Vision: Truth to
Nature. This painting was previously
exhibited at the Tate Britain Museum in
London and at the Alte Nationalgalerie in
Berlin.
Sandys and La huida de un hereje by John
Everett Millais were part of the exhibition
titled Artist as Narrator: Nineteenth
Century Narrative Art in England and
France.
Repartiendo rancho by Antonio de Puga
and Dos niños con calabazas by Pedro
Núñez Villavicencio were part of the
exhibition El mundo que vivió Cervantes,
organized by the Sociedad Estatal de
Conmemoraciones Culturales in Madrid
and whose inauguration was attended by
the King and Queen of Spain.
El Retrato de Martín Zapater by Francisco
de Goya y Lucientes was on loan at the
Museo Nacional de Arte. The project’s
objective was to bring together for the
first time in Mexico works by the artist that
were representative of his creative process
throughout his career. The exhibition’s
second venue will be the San Diego
Museum of Art.
San Francisco en meditación con el
hermano Leo by Theotokipoulos Domenikos
“el Greco” was shown at the Museo de
Arte Tlaxcala in Mexico and was the most
visited exhibition in the museum’s young
history. This work of art was loaned in
exchange for six Frida Kahlo works used in
the exhibition Frida Kahlo y sus mundos.
The shipments of the paintings were
carried out under the supervision of the
Museum’s specialized personnel (couriers),
which included the Museum’s conservators,
the Curator in Chief, and the Registrar,
who travel with the paintings to their final
destination. Furthermore, international
transport companies were subcontracted
to monitor the transportation of the works
of art so as to minimize the risks of
damage.
Exhibitions
Regarding the exhibitions at our facilities,
the curator Víctor Calafell traveled as
courier for the exhibition La memoria en el
papel: Libros y estampas de la colección
Franz Mayer for which we undertook the
coordination of the shipment, reports,
photographs of their condition, and the
obligatory registration of the 102 works
that were part of the exhibition.
58
In June, we began to gather the works for
the exhibition José Antonio Torres Martinó:
Voz de varios registros, which opened
in July. The exhibition ended with the
registration of 115 works from 38 private
and institutional collectors.
The year ended with the coordination of
nine shipments from London, the U.S.,
and Mexico, including 10 couriers and the
registration of 285 works for the exhibition
titled Frida Kahlo y sus mundos. This
project required much dedication, since we
began early on in the year processing the
requests for the works of art and producing
the required documents for the loans for
the exhibition. In fact, for this exhibition’s
shipments we counted on the dedicated
work from a group of officers from the
Ponce Safety and Protection Office of
the Puerto Rico Police Department, who
ensured the proper and safe handling of
the works of art to and from the planes,
and to and from the MAP. This assistance
allowed us to offer this project the much
special attention it required, and at the
same time monitor the handling of the
works at all times.
Other Projects
As part of the renovation and expansion
project, we met with several companies
that design storage equipment for works
of art in order to evaluate and determine
the equipment that would be required to
store our collection in the Museum’s new
building. We also visited various depots
of works of art at the Museum of Modern
Art (MOMA) in New York in order to
have a better idea of the use, operation,
advantages, and disadvantages of the
equipment under recommendation.
A very important project carried out jointly
by the staff of the General Services,
Curatorial Department, and Conservation
Laboratory was the removal and subsequent
rearrangement of paintings and other pieces
in the Museum’s galleries, taking advantage
of the fact that they had to be removed
for the installation of the new skylights.
This task also included substituting the
cardboard sheets containing acid which
protected the back of the works on canvas
to acid-free ones; labeling the back of the
paintings with more visible and legible tags;
and cleaning many of the frames, which
was done by the Conservation Laboratory
staff.
During this year, we continued taking
professional photographs of the works in
the Museum’s permanent collection, which
will be included in the third edition of the
Museum’s catalog. Mr. Johnny Betancourt
is in charge of taking these photographs.
Recursos Humanos
American Association of Museum Directors
relacionada a correos electrónicos
A pesar
65
año asociados a ésta representan sólo el
28% del total de los ingresos obtenidos
como resultado de su presentación.
Operations
Support and collaboration toward new
trends
Operations is in charge of managing
the resources in an efficient manner, in
order to create an atmosphere of service
and support parallel to the institution’s
expectations. To this end, it supervises
several divisions: Human Resources, General
Services, Technical Systems, Accounting,
the Musarte store, Admissions, and the
Café.
Human Resources
A study of the institution’s organizational
environment at all levels was conducted
this year in order to obtain a more
complete vision of our employees’ feelings
and to take pertinent action in the areas
that require it.
As part of this process, we hired an
independent human resources consultant.
With the consultant’s collaboration, the
Office of Human Resources began the
process of developing new initiatives in
human resources management, measuring
their efficiency in accordance with
established objectives, creating training
programs, and broadening the scope of
management support for the departmental
directors of the institution.
We also created a direct compensation
structure, which includes a pay structure
and a procedures manual for its
administration. The labor market used
as reference to develop the payment
structure was the Salary Survey (2005)
by the American Association of Museum
Directors (AAMD) and the Puerto Rico
Manufacturers Association (PRMA). This
study has allowed us to adequately
group the positions hierarchically and
to establish a salary scale by steps
for each grade. Currently, we are
designing the performance evaluation
process for the different levels of the
organizational hierarchy and are also
reviewing the employees’ manual.
In its efforts to maintain an environment
of camaraderie among the employees,
collaborators, and volunteers of the Museo
de Arte de Ponce, the Office of Human
Resources organized a series of activities
to recognize their extraordinary work in
fulfilling this year’s goals.
General Services
This division is in charge of all matters
related to maintenance, security, transportation
of works of art, preparation of
the areas for exhibitions, and educational
and cultural programs.
The 2005 year was very active, particularly
regarding the improvements to the
physical facilities of the Museum’s main
67
uilding. Beginning last year, the MAP
began the project of renovation and
expansion of its facilities, in which this
division played a significant role. This
division’s personnel monitored this work
and, in collaboration with the Department
of Registrar, coordinated and executed
everything related to moving the works of
art in the MAP’s galleries to allow for the
installation of the new skylights, as well as
the changes implemented in the galleries.
Other important projects were the coordination
of the transportation and security
of the works of art received for temporary
exhibitions, particularly for Frida Kahlo y
sus mundos as well as the preparation of
the galleries for their presentations.
Technical Systems
A process for improving the MAP’s
technological infrastructure began in 2005,
with the purchase of new equipment to
better store the database and information
related to electronic mail, as well as the
implementation of more efficient safety
systems for the computers and the
exhibition galleries. We also acquired an
inventory software program for the Musarte
store, which significantly reduces the time
it takes to carry out this process.
In the area of communications, we were
able to link the Office of Development and
Marketing located in City View Plaza in
Guaynabo with the MAP in Ponce through a
fast and secure connection. A T1 was also
installed, thereby improving the efficiency
of internal and external communications
via Internet.
Operational Results
Like many other nonprofit institutions, the
MAP faced a great financial challenge
during 2005, which, despite our best efforts,
ended with a deficit of $207,535. The total
income for this year was $4.1 million, a
25% increase over the previous year.
Despite a 10% decrease in government
funding and income through special
fundraising activities, the MAP experienced
an increase in such sources of income as
admissions, contributions, and sales at the
Musarte store, among others.
This year, the MAP received 68,623 visitors
who enjoyed the permanent collection as
well as the exhibitions, which represented
a 47% increase in admissions over the
previous year. The success of the Frida
Kahlo y sus mundos exhibition was an
important contributing factor for this
increase.
The Musarte store amplified and diversified
the articles it offers MAP visitors. Hence, it
increased sales volume by 4% for the year
ended December 31, 2005.
Although fundraising efforts proved to
be a challenge, the cash and in-kind
contributions received increased by 56%
68
over last year’s revenue. This year’s
contributions include a portion allocated
by the Luis A. Ferré Foundation, which
occasionally makes contributions to the
MAP for certain operational needs.
The Café has always been an alternative
which offered our visitors refreshment,
candy, and snacks, funds that also
represent, although at a lesser measure,
a source of income for the MAP. At the
end of the year, in order to broaden these
services at a different level, we reached an
agreement with chefs Francisco Murphy and
Solange Ortiz, who assumed management
of the Café in order to transform it into a
gastronomical corner inside the MAP.
The MAP’s operational expenses increased
at a rate higher than the revenue generated,
Visitors of Frida Kahlo y
sus mundos exhibition
in spite of our efforts to control expenditure.
Compared to last year, there was a 31%
increase in expenses which is reflected in
programmatic services as well as in support
services. The MAP decided to invest this
year in projects of great importance that
were designed to reaffirm our institution’s
position on a local level, as well as in
other countries, as exemplified by the Frida
Kahlo y sus mundos exhibition. Most of the
costs of this exhibition will be recovered
after its ending in 2006, since the income
reflected during this year associated to the
exhibition represent only 28% of the total
obtained as a result of its presentation.
Museo de Arte de Ponce
In our opinion, the accompanying statement of financial position of Museo de
Arte de Ponce (operated by The Luis A. Ferré Foundation, Inc.) and the related
statements of activities and changes in net assets and of cash flows present
fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Museo de Arte de Ponce
at December 31, 2005 and 2004, and the results of its operations and its
cash flows for the years then ended in conformity with accounting principles
generally accepted in the United States of America. These financial statements
are the responsibility of the Foundation’s management; our responsibility is
to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audits.
We conducted our audits of these statements in accordance with auditing
standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those standards
require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance
about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. An
audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts
and disclosures in the financial statements, assessing the accounting principles
used and significant estimates made by management, and evaluating the
overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audits provide a
reasonable basis for our opinion.
Notes to Financial Statements
December 31, 2005 and 2004
1. Activity and Summary of Significant Accounting Policies
The Museo de Arte de Ponce (the “Museum”) is operated by The Luis A.
Ferré Foundation, Inc. (the “Foundation”), a publicly supported charitable
organization. The accounts of the Museum are separate funds within the
accounts of the Foundation. Principles of fund accounting are followed
in the allocation and observance of limitations and restrictions placed
on the use of resources available to the Museum. The Museum’s art
collection is owned by the Foundation. The Museum is also located at
facilities owned by the Foundation.
The Museum manages the Foundation’s art collection, provides curatorial
and conservation services to the collection and sponsors exhibits, cultural
and educational programs. The Museum is accredited by the American
Association of Museums.
The Museum prepares its financial statements in conformity with accounting
principles generally accepted in the United States of America. The more
significant accounting policies followed by the Museum in preparing the
financial statements are summarized below:
Use of Estimates in the Preparation of Financial Statements
The preparation of financial statements in conformity with accounting
principles generally accepted in the United States of America requires
management to make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported
amount of assets and liabilities and disclosure of contingent assets
89
and liabilities at the date of the financial statements and the reported
amounts of revenues and expenses during the reporting period. Actual
results could differ from those estimates.
Basis of Accounting
The accompanying financial statements are presented on the accrual
basis of accounting.
Support and Revenues
The Museum receives a substantial amount of its support from government
agencies and the general public. Admission revenues are recognized
when earned. Pledges are recognized when these are legally enforceable.
All contributions are considered to be available for use unless specifically
restricted by the donor. A donor restriction expires when a stipulated
time restriction ends or when a purpose restriction is accomplished. Upon
expiration, temporarily restricted net assets are reclassified to unrestricted
net assets and are reported in the statement of activities as net assets
released from restrictions. However, if a restriction is fulfilled in the same
time period in which the contribution is received, the Museum reports the
support as unrestricted.
The Museum recognizes contribution revenue for certain services and
assets received at their fair value.
Allocation of Revenues and Expenses
It is the Foundation’s policy to allocate to the Museum those revenues and
expenses which are directly related to the Museum’s operations. General
and administrative expenses which are common to the Foundation and
the Museum are allocated based on management’s best estimate.
Accounts Receivable
Accounts receivable consist of balances collectible within one year.
Investments
Investments in debt securities are carried at market value.
Property and Equipment
Expenditures for property and equipment are recorded at cost. Depreciation
is provided on the straight-line basis over the estimated useful lives of the
90
assets. When property and equipment are disposed of, the cost and the
related accumulated depreciation are removed from the accounts, and
any gain or loss is recorded in the statement of activities.
Statement of Cash Flows
For purposes of reporting cash flows, cash includes cash on hand, demand
deposits with banks or other financial institutions, and unrestricted money
market accounts.
Tax Status
The Museum is operated by the Foundation, a publicly supported charitable
foundation which is exempt from United States and Puerto Rico income
taxes.
Reclassifications
Certain reclassifications have been made to the 2004 financial statements
to conform with the 2005 presentation.
2. Endowment Fund
The Foundation created an endowment fund for the Museum which funds
are permanently restricted. One half of the endowment fund’s interest
income is used to support the Museum operations and is reported as
unrestricted income. At December 31, 2005, the fund consists of debt
securities and money market accounts with a market value of $1,347,912
(2004 - $1,328,190).
