Season with the collaboration of the
Ponce Musical Foundation. It consisted
of 12 concerts, which were presented
in two sessions, the second one being
distinguished by the Series of Great
The Museum’s Education Department is
an important link in the development of
cultural activities, because they promote
intellectual knowledge through art and
culture. Our purpose is to bring in public
in order to break barriers through the
different manifestations of art. Taking
this into consideration, Ana Margarita
Hernández, Director of Education, offered
three Art Appreciation Workshops directed
for a group of elderly.
At the end of 2005, the exhibitions of
Master José Antonio Torres Martinó:
Voz de varios registros and Frida Kahlo
y sus mundos were central to complete
the year with 109 cultural, educational,
and private activities, with a total of
13,912 participants.
Serving the Public
The Curatorial Department serves the
public with information on the MAP’s
permanent collection and provides
scholars with images for reproduction
in academic publications. We received
106 requests came from all parts of the
world—Hungary, Japan, Italy, Mexico,
England, Spain, and the United States,
to name a few countries.
In addition, in October the Curatorial
Department received Dr. Roswitha
Juffinger, Director of Residenzgalerie
in Salzburg, Austria, who came to
investigate some works of art in the
MAP’s collection.
The Museo de Arte de Ponce has a history
of acknowledging Puerto Rican artists
through acquisitions and exhibitions of
their works. In 2005, the MAP received
the painting La última montaña (2005) by
Jorge Zeno and Tem (2004) by Carmelo
Sobrino. Both are hymns to the landscape
of Puerto Rico.
La última montaña is a large triptych
of El Yunque rain forest. This work is
part of a series that expresses the
artist’s concern for the preservation of
the mountain’s fragile ecosystem. With
thin washes of paint that drip down
the canvas, Zeno captures the light
and atmosphere of this sacred site.
The effect is similar to depictions of
mountains in Chinese scroll paintings
during the Song Dynasty (A.D. 907-
1279), in which the very soul of the
mountain is the subject of the work. In
La última montaña, Zeno captures the
solemnity and power of the mountain
and the softness of a misty veil.
