uilding. Beginning last year, the MAP
began the project of renovation and
expansion of its facilities, in which this
division played a significant role. This
division’s personnel monitored this work
and, in collaboration with the Department
of Registrar, coordinated and executed
everything related to moving the works of
art in the MAP’s galleries to allow for the
installation of the new skylights, as well as
the changes implemented in the galleries.
Other important projects were the coordination
of the transportation and security
of the works of art received for temporary
exhibitions, particularly for Frida Kahlo y
sus mundos as well as the preparation of
the galleries for their presentations.
Technical Systems
A process for improving the MAP’s
technological infrastructure began in 2005,
with the purchase of new equipment to
better store the database and information
related to electronic mail, as well as the
implementation of more efficient safety
systems for the computers and the
exhibition galleries. We also acquired an
inventory software program for the Musarte
store, which significantly reduces the time
it takes to carry out this process.
In the area of communications, we were
able to link the Office of Development and
Marketing located in City View Plaza in
Guaynabo with the MAP in Ponce through a
fast and secure connection. A T1 was also
installed, thereby improving the efficiency
of internal and external communications
via Internet.
Operational Results
Like many other nonprofit institutions, the
MAP faced a great financial challenge
during 2005, which, despite our best efforts,
ended with a deficit of $207,535. The total
income for this year was $4.1 million, a
25% increase over the previous year.
Despite a 10% decrease in government
funding and income through special
fundraising activities, the MAP experienced
an increase in such sources of income as
admissions, contributions, and sales at the
Musarte store, among others.
This year, the MAP received 68,623 visitors
who enjoyed the permanent collection as
well as the exhibitions, which represented
a 47% increase in admissions over the
previous year. The success of the Frida
Kahlo y sus mundos exhibition was an
important contributing factor for this
increase.
The Musarte store amplified and diversified
the articles it offers MAP visitors. Hence, it
increased sales volume by 4% for the year
ended December 31, 2005.
Although fundraising efforts proved to
be a challenge, the cash and in-kind
contributions received increased by 56%
