portraits; fashion <strong>de</strong>sign; drawing using<br />

the Alfredo Best Maugard Method;<br />

and a day for art stu<strong>de</strong>nts to study<br />

Frida Kahlo’s paintings, in addition to<br />

gui<strong>de</strong>d tours for different groups.<br />

School and University Programs:<br />

• In June, 40 science and mathematics<br />

teachers participating in Proyecto<br />

Alianza para el Fortalecimiento <strong>de</strong>l<br />

Aprendizaje <strong>de</strong> las Matemáticas y<br />

las Ciencias (AFAMAC by its Spanish<br />

acronym) from the University of<br />

Puerto Rico (UPR), Mayagüez Campus,<br />

atten<strong>de</strong>d an art appreciation and<br />

curricular integration workshop at the<br />

Museum.<br />

• In August, we began our project with the<br />

Pontificia Universidad Católica <strong>de</strong> Puerto<br />

Rico (PUCPR by its Spanish acronym),<br />

offering nine hours of training to practicing<br />

stu<strong>de</strong>nts (elementary, intermediate, and<br />

high school levels) in art appreciation<br />

(using as strategy the game QUEST:<br />

Question for Un<strong>de</strong>rstanding, Exploring,<br />

Seeing, and Thinking), curricular<br />

integration, and story writing and<br />

storytelling. From January to May, 95<br />

practicing stu<strong>de</strong>nts and four university<br />

professors participated in the program,<br />

allowing us to consequently reach 2,850<br />

of their stu<strong>de</strong>nts.<br />

• We continued to offer our art<br />

appreciation and curricular integration<br />

workshops to stu<strong>de</strong>nts working on<br />

doctorate <strong>de</strong>grees in education at the<br />

PUCPR.<br />

• PUCPR professors of Art Appreciation<br />

and Puerto Rico Art History used<br />

original works of art from the museum<br />

galleries in their classes.<br />

• The Universidad <strong>de</strong> Puerto Rico, <strong>Ponce</strong><br />

Campus, continued to offer its firstyear<br />

stu<strong>de</strong>nts the course Museum and<br />

Culture as an elective.<br />

• Beginning in January and up until<br />

December <strong>2005</strong>, we implemented<br />

the project Futuros Guías <strong>de</strong>l MAP,<br />

sponsored by Philip Morris of Puerto<br />

Rico. Twenty-three stu<strong>de</strong>nts from<br />

elementary, intermediate, and high<br />

schools from public and private schools<br />

in <strong>Ponce</strong> were given an introduction<br />

to the permanent collection. They<br />

also participated in workshops on<br />

voice projection, diction, and scenic<br />

movement, among others. Each group<br />

atten<strong>de</strong>d classes with their teachers<br />

in or<strong>de</strong>r to follow up on the material<br />

covered. Also, the participants’ parents<br />

ma<strong>de</strong> a commitment to support their<br />

children and the project. The stu<strong>de</strong>nts<br />

were also given credit for their course<br />

work in art and theater at their<br />

respective schools.<br />
