the importance of the arts as an integral part of education for students, teachers, and the general public. Among the programs organized were Futuros Guías del MAP, which resulted in great success among students of elementary, intermediate, and high schools, as well as among parents and teachers. We also held our summer camp under the theme Un salto de diversión a Europa, as well as educational workshops and the first Simposio Internacional de Crítica de Arte, titled: ¿Quién la escribe ¿Quién la lee ¿A quién le importa General Activities: We coordinated all educational offerings for the following activities: • 4th Family Day held on Three Kings’ Day, and the Commemoration of Don Luis A. Ferre’s Birthday. Total attendance for both events reached 2,151 visitors (1,699 and 452 respectively). • Education Week (the first week of May), devoting one day to teachers and students, who were given free admission to the Museo de Arte de Ponce. We received 157 visitors. • International Museum Day (May 18), under the theme Los museos estableciendo puentes entre culturas. DirecTV sponsored this event. We had an attendance of approximately 187 visitors. Educational Programs for Temporary Exhibitions • La memoria en el papel: Libros y estampas de la colección Franz Mayer The educational program focused on graphic expression, the conservation of memory on paper, and handcrafting paper, among others. • José Antonio Torres Martinó: Voz de varios registros We held workshops emphasizing the media and themes used by the artist such as ink drawings, the Ponce landscapes, portraits, xylography, and textbook illustrations. We also held lectures regarding other professions held by the artist, such as radio announcer and labor leader, among others. • Frida Kahlo y sus mundos We designed a bilingual guide of activities enabling the general public to maximize their experience with the exhibition. The educational program included lectures such as: Mexico and Puerto Rico: un mural común and Frida, la esencia de la libertad; as well as workshops that explored the media employed by Kahlo, her contemporaries and other influences, among them jewelry design, Pre-Hispanic Mexico 33
and Puerto Rico; basic painting aimed at the elderly; basic drawing; oil self portraits; fashion design; drawing using the Alfredo Best Maugard Method; and a day for art students to study Frida Kahlo’s paintings, in addition to guided tours for different groups. School and University Programs: • In June, 40 science and mathematics teachers participating in Proyecto Alianza para el Fortalecimiento del Aprendizaje de las Matemáticas y las Ciencias (AFAMAC by its Spanish acronym) from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), Mayagüez Campus, attended an art appreciation and curricular integration workshop at the Museum. • In August, we began our project with the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico (PUCPR by its Spanish acronym), offering nine hours of training to practicing students (elementary, intermediate, and high school levels) in art appreciation (using as strategy the game QUEST: Question for Understanding, Exploring, Seeing, and Thinking), curricular integration, and story writing and storytelling. From January to May, 95 practicing students and four university professors participated in the program, allowing us to consequently reach 2,850 of their students. • We continued to offer our art appreciation and curricular integration workshops to students working on doctorate degrees in education at the PUCPR. • PUCPR professors of Art Appreciation and Puerto Rico Art History used original works of art from the museum galleries in their classes. • The Universidad de Puerto Rico, Ponce Campus, continued to offer its firstyear students the course Museum and Culture as an elective. • Beginning in January and up until December 2005, we implemented the project Futuros Guías del MAP, sponsored by Philip Morris of Puerto Rico. Twenty-three students from elementary, intermediate, and high schools from public and private schools in Ponce were given an introduction to the permanent collection. They also participated in workshops on voice projection, diction, and scenic movement, among others. Each group attended classes with their teachers in order to follow up on the material covered. Also, the participants’ parents made a commitment to support their children and the project. The students were also given credit for their course work in art and theater at their respective schools. 34
