Es común hoy en día ver cómo en<br />
oficinas, hogares y escuelas, las<br />
personas han cambiado el habitual<br />
desktop (computadora de escritorio)<br />
por un ordenador portátil. Su<br />
tamaño, funcionalidad y el acceso cada<br />
día más sencillo a internet, han permitido<br />
esta transición que ahora se manifiesta<br />
en cifras. Este año, por primera<br />
vez, se venderán en el mundo más unidades<br />
portátiles que desktops.<br />
Así lo anunció la con<strong>su</strong>ltora de mercados<br />
IDC, que prevé que este año<br />
se venderán 152 millones de portátiles<br />
y 175 millones más en el 2010.<br />
El aumento es considerable ya que<br />
en el 2008 fueron comercializados<br />
142 millones.<br />
En zonas como Latinoamérica,<br />
donde los<br />
u<strong>su</strong>arios no tienen<br />
el mismo perfil<br />
del con<strong>su</strong>midor<br />
en países desarrollados,<br />
también<br />
se presentan datos<br />
que apuntan al incremento<br />
en el con<strong>su</strong>mo de estos aparatos.<br />
Jay Gumbiner, director de dispositivos<br />
comerciales y con<strong>su</strong>mo de IDC, le dijo a<br />
Conciencia News que “en los primeros<br />
tres meses del año, un 62 por ciento se<br />
está despachando en desktops, y sólo un<br />
38 por ciento en notebooks (portátiles);<br />
aunque hace un<br />
año estábamos<br />
en 27 por ciento.<br />
Este porcentaje<br />
ha crecido por la<br />
cultura de movilidad,<br />
y porque en<br />
Brasil las empresas<br />
comenzaron<br />
a ensamblar<br />
laptops.”<br />
Buena parte<br />
de estas<br />
estadísticas<br />
están cobijadas por el auge de los netbooks,<br />
un “<strong>su</strong>bportátil” de bajo costo<br />
y reducidas dimensiones. Aunque sólo<br />
sirve para navegar en Internet y realizar<br />
funciones básicas, ha gozado de una<br />
gran aceptación en el mercado.<br />
“El desempeño de los netbooks, o<br />
ultraportátiles <strong>su</strong>peró nuestras expectativas<br />
(…) se espera que este año se<br />
vendan 1,780,000 unidades. Mientras<br />
que el año anterior la cifra fue de<br />
850,000,” agregó Gumbiner.<br />
Sin embargo, Gumbiner cree que<br />
los u<strong>su</strong>arios no conocen a fondo el<br />
rendimiento de estas computadoras,<br />
desarrolladas para tareas ágiles y de<br />
baja complejidad. No es un ordenador<br />
común y corriente.<br />
“El desempeño de los netbooks, o<br />
ultraportátiles <strong>su</strong>peró nuestras expectativas<br />
(…) Pero por ahora no hay <strong>su</strong>fi-<br />
patrocinada por<br />
ciente educación en el mercado para<br />
entender qué se puede hacer con un<br />
netbook. Con el tiempo la gente entenderá<br />
esto mejor. La gente cree que se trata<br />
del mismo notebook y están ahorrando<br />
hasta 300 dólares, pero no es así.”<br />
Así mismo, la venta de desktops en<br />
Latinoamérica será menor a pesar de<br />
que cada día más hogares en esta región<br />
acceden a un ordenador. “Estamos pronosticando<br />
que en el 2009 van a decrecer<br />
un 14 por ciento, comparado con el<br />
2008. Tenemos que pensar que cuando<br />
hay problemas en una región, la gente<br />
más pobre será la más afectada. Si<br />
vemos el crecimiento de los desktops<br />
en los últimos años, en parte fue por<br />
familias que adquirieron <strong>su</strong> computadora<br />
por primera vez.”<br />
Por otra parte, algunos expertos aseguran<br />
que los u<strong>su</strong>arios ya no buscan unidades<br />
con herramientas avanzadas<br />
para satisfacer <strong>su</strong>s<br />
intereses. Anteriormente,<br />
una persona<br />
con la necesidad de<br />
navegar en Internet<br />
y trabajar en Office,<br />
compraba un desktop<br />
con alta capacidad para evitar<br />
actualizaciones prematuras y tener a<br />
disposición programas para un eventual<br />
interés. Hoy van por lo que necesitan.<br />
“Estamos en un punto en el desarrollo<br />
de la informática, donde la gran<br />
mayoría de la gente (alrededor del<br />
80 por ciento), con lo que hoy existe<br />
puede hacer lo<br />
que quiere. Lo que<br />
históricamente fue<br />
la diferencia en<br />
rendimiento entre<br />
desktop y notebook,<br />
ya no se está<br />
dando. Obviamente<br />
persiste alguna<br />
diferencia, pero la<br />
gente ya no necesita<br />
tanto funcionamiento,”<br />
dijo Enrique<br />
Carrier, director de Carrier y Asociados,<br />
que <strong>su</strong>ministra análisis sobre servicios<br />
vinculados a Internet.<br />
Argentina, por ejemplo, es el tercer<br />
país con más acceso a Internet en<br />
América Latina, con penetración al<br />
49.4 por ciento de la población el año<br />
anterior, según cifras de Internet World<br />
Stats. Carrier afirma que, el año pasado,<br />
en este país “una por cada cuatro computadoras<br />
era portátil.”<br />
“Hay que <strong>su</strong>mar otros factores, como<br />
la portabilidad que permite acceso a<br />
muchos lugares; no sólo dentro de la<br />
casa. Ahora se desplazan por la ciudad<br />
y la van llevando. Hay una tendencia a<br />
que los hogares donde ya están informatizados<br />
con conexión a Internet,<br />
haya más de una PC. Las portátiles, por<br />
<strong>su</strong> espacio, se prestan para este crecimiento,”<br />
concluyó. H
