On of them waspart of those high schools established at the beginning of the previous c<strong>en</strong>tury to lead childr<strong>en</strong>of the elite up to Higher Education. The other one was gradually appointed to the provision ofPrimary Education for the childr<strong>en</strong> of the nation.Teachers were appointed and training in differ<strong>en</strong>t ways: in universities, where the trainingon specialised subjects was highlighted as well as aca<strong>de</strong>mic excell<strong>en</strong>ce, and in the ècolesnormales, which conferred great importance to pre-service training of teachers to be.Wh<strong>en</strong> the statutes, conditions on the teaching practice and the pre-service training ofSecondary School teachers was unified, the high school mo<strong>de</strong>l prevailed over the school one,thus, the latter was drastically dissociated from Primary Education. The <strong>de</strong>mocratization ofteaching gave rise to a spectacular expansion of pupils along with a <strong>de</strong>ep change as regards itssocial and cultural features, thus <strong>de</strong>veloping new <strong>de</strong>mands in the profession.This article focuses on the significance of the creation of the IUFM (Instituts Universitaires<strong>de</strong> Formation <strong>de</strong> Maîtres – Primary Teacher Training Institutions) in 1989, which ma<strong>de</strong> possiblethe improvem<strong>en</strong>t and adaptation of teacher training to the new <strong>de</strong>mands of teaching practices.Th<strong>en</strong>, the <strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t of stages of new training programs and changes in teaching policies,with doctrinaire and union confrontations as a backdrop, are <strong>de</strong>scribed.The paper <strong>en</strong>ds with future perspectives following the step tak<strong>en</strong> in 2007 towards theinclusion of IUFM into universities, the improvem<strong>en</strong>t of training programs and the change inthe procedure for the appointm<strong>en</strong>t of teachers.Key words: Secondary Education, school, teachers training, IUFM, teaching profession,professionalization, subjects.146<strong>Revista</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>Educación</strong>, 350.
