Diébédo Francis Kéré, architect, educator and social
activist, has been selected as the 2022 Laureate
of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, announced
Tom Pritzker, Chairman of The Hyatt Foundation,
which sponsors the award that is regarded
internationally as architecture’s highest honor.
Diébédo Francis Kéré, arquitecto, educador y activista
social, ha sido seleccionado como el Laureado
del Premio Pritzker de Arquitectura 2022, anunció
Tom Pritzker, presidente de The Hyatt Foundation,
que patrocina el premio que es considerado
internacionalmente como el más alto honor de la

Born in Gando, Burkina Faso and based in
Berlin, Germany, the architect known as Francis
Kéré empowers and transforms communities
through the process of architecture.
Through his commitment to social justice and
engagement, and intelligent use of local materials
to connect and respond to the natural climate,
he works in marginalized countries laden
with constraints and adversity, where architecture
and infrastructure are absent.
Nacido en Gando, Burkina Faso y radicado en
Berlín, Alemania, el arquitecto conocido como
Francis Kéré empodera y transforma comunidades
a través del proceso de la arquitectura. A
través de su compromiso con la justicia social y
el compromiso, y el uso inteligente de materiales
locales para conectarse y responder al clima
natural, trabaja en países marginados cargados
de limitaciones y adversidades, donde la
arquitectura y la infraestructura están ausentes.

health facilities, professional housing, civic buildings,
and public spaces, often on land where resources
are fragile and fellowship is vital, the expression
of his works exceeds the value of a building
itself.

Construyendo instituciones escolares contemporáneas,
instalaciones de salud, viviendas profesionales,
edificios cívicos y espacios públicos, muchas
veces en tierras donde los recursos son frágiles y
el compañerismo es vital, la expresión de sus

The national confidence and embrace of Kéré has prompted
one of the architect’s most pivotal and ambitious projects, the
National Assembly of Burkina Faso (Ouagadougou, Burkina
Faso), which was commissioned, although remains unbuilt
amidst present uncertain times. After the Burkinabè uprising
in 2014 destroyed the former structure, the architect designed
a stepped and lattice pyramidal building, housing a 127-
person assembly hall on the interior, while encouraging informal
congregation on the exterior.

La confianza nacional y el abrazo de Kéré han impulsado uno
de los proyectos más fundamentales y ambiciosos del arquitecto,
la Asamblea Nacional de Burkina Faso (Uagadugú, Burkina
Faso), que se encargó, aunque permanece sin construir
en medio de los tiempos inciertos actuales. Después de que
el levantamiento de Burkinabè en 2014 destruyera la estructura
anterior, el arquitecto diseñó un edificio piramidal escalonado
y enrejado, que alberga un salón de actos para 127 personas

is one piece to a greater master plan, envisioned to include
indigenous flora, exhibition spaces, courtyards,
and a monument to those who lost their lives in protest
of the old regime.

The project is inspired by the chattering tree,
the ancient West African tradition of gathering
under a tree to make consensual decisions in
the interest of a community. The palaver tree
is a timeless symbol that has been witnessed
by previous generations and inspires respect
for the majestic forces of nature.

El proyecto está inspirado en el árbol parlante,
la antigua tradición de África Occidental de reunirse
bajo un árbol para tomar decisiones
consensuadas en interés de una comunidad.
El árbol palabrero es un símbolo atemporal

e inspira respeto por las majestuosas
fuerzas de la naturaleza.

The assembly hall is located on the ground
floor, its spectacular ceiling created by the
dynamic scope of the structure, supporting
the functions above. The crown is made up
of offices and ancillary functions, set back
from the deep façade, which filters strong
sunlight.

baja, su espectacular techo creado por el
alcance dinámico de la estructura, que soporta
las funciones de arriba. La corona se

The trunk is hollow, creating a central patio that allows
natural ventilation of the circulation spaces and the penetration
of indirect light into the floor. A spiral staircase
in its center connects the assembly hall on the ground
floor with the offices above. On the top floor, a roof terrace
offers panoramic views of the city and the lagoon in
the distance.

A large part of the site is dedicated to a public park, which
will showcase Benin's native flora and provide Porto-Novo
with ample recreation space. To create a sense of openness
and transparency, the park will extend to the foot of the palabrero
tree, offering a generous shaded space where citizens
can meet and deliberate, analogous to the assembly
hall on the opposite side.

Una gran parte del sitio está dedicada a un parque público,
que exhibirá la flora autóctona de Benin y proporcionará a
Porto-Novo un amplio espacio de recreación. Para crear

In the southeast corner of the site, a public square
marks the civic façade of the building, across from
the former national assembly where Benin’s independence
was historically declared. Further facilities
for government services are integrated into
the park’s topography with planted roofs, and
form a façade along the southern limit of the site

marca la fachada cívica del edificio, frente a la antigua
asamblea nacional donde históricamente se
declaró la independencia de Benin. Otras instalaciones

Library
A poetic expression of light is consistent throughout
Kéré’s works. Rays of sun filter into buildings, courtyards
and intermediary spaces, overcoming harsh
midday conditions to offer places of serenity or gathering.
The concrete roof of Gando Primary School Library
was poured around a grid of traditional clay pots,
that once extracted, left openings allowing heat to escape
while circular beams of natural light could linger
and illuminate the interiors.

Una expresión poética de la luz es consistente a lo largo de
las obras de Kéré. Los rayos de sol se filtran en edificios,
patios y espacios intermedios, superando las duras condiciones
del mediodía para ofrecer lugares de serenidad o
reunión. El techo de hormigón de la biblioteca de la escuela
primaria de Gando se vertió alrededor de una rejilla de vasijas
de barro tradicionales que, una vez extraídas, dejaban
aberturas que permitían que el calor escapara mientras que
los rayos circulares de luz natural podían permanecer e iluminar
los interiores.

Gando Primary School (2001, Gando, Burkina Faso) established
the foundation for Kéré’s ideology– building a
wellspring with and for a community to fulfill an essential
need and redeem social inequities. His response required
a dual solution – a physical and contemporary design
for a facility that could combat extreme heat and poor
lighting conditions with limited resources, and a social resoluteness
to overcome incertitude from within the community.

La escuela primaria de Gando (2001, Gando, Burkina Faso)
sentó las bases de la ideología de Kéré: construir un manantial
con y para una comunidad para satisfacer una necesidad
esencial y redimir las desigualdades sociales. Su respuesta
requería una solución dual: un diseño físico y contemporáneo
para una instalación que pudiera combatir el
calor extremo y las malas condiciones de iluminación con
recursos limitados, y una resolución social para superar la
incertidumbre dentro de la comunidad.

Indigenous clay was fortified with cement to form bricks with
bioclimatic thermal mass, retaining cooler air inside while
allowing heat to escape through a brick ceiling and wide,
overhanging, elevated roof, resulting in ventilation without
the mechanical intervention of air conditioning. The success
of this project increased the school’s student body from 120
to 700 students, and catalyzed Teachers’ Housing (2004,
Gando, Burkina Faso), an Extension (2008, Gando, Burkina
Faso) and Library (2019, Gando, Burkina Faso).

In The Gando Primary School, the first work he designed
when he was still a student, received the Aga Khan Award for
architecture in 2004. He changed the usual mud construction
with walls covered with sheet metal for one made of earthen
bricks, also made in the village with the same materials, but
better protected from the rain by metal roofs with large overhangs
separated from the clay roof of the buildings. With this
he managed to improve ventilation and reduce the high temperatures
that were reached inside.
La Escuela Primaria de Gando, la primera obra que proyectó
cuando era aún estudiante, recibió el Premio Aga Khan de arquitectura
en el año 2004. Cambió la construcción habitual de
barro con paredes recubiertas de chapa metálica por otra de
ladrillos de tierra, también fabricados en la aldea con los mismos
materiales, pero mejor protegidos de la lluvia mediante tejados
metálicos con grandes voladizos separados de la cubierta
de arcilla de los edificios. Con esto consiguió mejorar la ventilación
y disminuir las altas temperaturas que se alcanzaban
en el interior.

But Kéré's work did not end there and the foundation
that bears his name continues its work to promote a
sustainable model in Gando that serves as an example
for all of West Africa. The educational complex
continues to grow.

To prevent students from being disturbed by the
nearby road, a welcoming green space with a
stop for the school bus is located at the entrance.
The complex opens with the administrative buildings,
which further house the children. As you
enter the school, the walls, echoing the gills of a
fish, allow you to see inside the classrooms, creating
a sense of transparency and trust.
Para evitar que la carretera cercana moleste a
los estudiantes, en la entrada se ubica un espacio
verde de bienvenida con una parada para el
autobús escolar. El complejo se abre con los edificios
administrativos, que albergan aún más a los
niños. Al entrar a la escuela, las paredes, haciendo
eco de las branquias de un pez, permiten ver el interior
de las aulas, creando una sensación de
transparencia y confianza.

Following the nursery school, the other
side of the complex overlooks the surrounding
valley. It includes the classrooms
of the primary school, the refectory
and the sports facilities.

to change unsustainable patterns of production and consumption,
as we strive to provide adequate buildings and infrastructure
for billions of people in need. He raises fundamental
questions about the meaning of permanence and
durability of construction in a context of constant technological
changes and the use and reuse of structures.
El trabajo de Francis Kéré también nos recuerda la lucha
necesaria para cambiar los patrones insostenibles de producción
y consumo, mientras nos esforzamos por proporcionar
edificios e infraestructura adecuados para miles de
millones de personas necesitadas. Plantea cuestiones fundamentales
sobre el significado de permanencia y durabilidad

child in his village to learn to read. Years later, he built a
school so that the new generations would not have to leave

Francis Kéré (Gando, Burkina Faso, 1965) fue el primer
niño de su pueblo que aprendió a leer. Años después, levantaba
una escuela para que las nuevas generaciones no
tuvieran que dejar su hogar para aprender. La exposición
‘Elementos primarios’ recoge una amplia retrospectiva de la
obra de uno de los referentes mundiales de la arquitectura
sostenible.
