BOKER DAMAST STRAIGHT RAZOR 8/8 

The forge and hardening shop for our 

carbon steel straight razors uses the 

proven silver steel, which is very tough 

and elastic, despite its excellent edge 

retention. The raw material is a rod 

which is cut to length, creating the so 

called splitter. The splitter is heated until 

red hot, and drop forged with a 1,500 

lb rammer. Next, the slugs have to cool 

to 392°F for two days in an annealing 

furnace. 

Then the excess material created during 

the forging process, the "wings," are 

trimmed. The slugs are once again 

straightened in a 200-ton press, before 

going to the hardening shop. In the 

hardening shop, the slugs are hardened 

and annealed in order to achieve the 

optimal combination of edge retention 

and elasticity for the material. In the 

grinding shop, the extra hollow grind with 

belly is created. The slugs are ground in 

18 individual steps, from rough grinding, 

to milling, to glazing. Between each 

step, the blades are cleaned, controlled, 

and straightened when necessary. 

We exclusively grind our straight razor 

blades extra hollow with belly. The belly 

lies in front of the strong hollow section 

and just behind the edge, which has 

a small hollow grind itself. The belly 

is the only way in which the blades 

can be ground out so thin and still 

retain sufficient stiffness, despite their 

elasticity. There are only a handful of 

the best and most specialized grinders 

in the world that have mastered this 

ultimate skill in straight razor production. 

Depending on the model, the last step 

is the matting or polishing of the blade. 

Finally, the blade is honed by hand 

on several bench whetstones with 

increasingly finer grits. After the final 

stropping, the sharpness of the straight 

razor is tested on a freely suspended 

human hair. 

The scales department manually affixes 

nickel silver pins, washers, and spacers 

to the blades. Wood and stag require 

special dexterity, as these natural 

materials can tear when too much 

pressure is applied. 

The widths of razor blades are 

traditionally given in eighths of an 

inch. So an 8/8“ blade is about one 

inch wide, whereas a 4/8“ blade 

is half an inch. The basic shapes 

of the dies in which our razors 

are still forged today were already 

in use at the start of the 20th

century, which explains why they 

do not correspond to the Anglo- 

Saxon unit of inch (25.4 mm), but to 

the long forgotten "Rhineland inch" 

(26.2 mm). 

The 5/8“ wide blade is probably 

the most common and widely used 

razor size. Narrower razors with a 

maximum width of 4/8“ are mainly 

used by hairdressers for shaving 

the neck or for thinning, because 

the smaller blades make it easier 

to work on precise inner radii and 

contours. 

A wide blade, on the other hand, 

glides more smoothly over the skin, 

thanks to its weight, and can also 

hold more soap and beard hairs 

before it becomes necessary to 

wipe them off. Quite apart from 

the functional differences, the rare 

broad blades immediately catch the 

eye of any razor enthusiast. At this 

point we therefore recommend to all 

better halves of the aforementioned 

enthusiasts:

A long-cherished wish has finally 

come true with the Boker Master 

Cutter Damascus: an 8/8 inch wide 

dream made of Damascus. While 

much time has passed since the 

first blank was forged, the efforts 

have been worthwhile. The mighty 

blade features jimping on both sides 

of the spine, is equipped with a 

Barber's Notch and is of course 

sharpened extra hollow with ridge on 

complex tone. The bulbous handle 

made of desert ironwood is, unlike 

all the other razors in our range, 

not classically riveted, but rather 

decoratively screwed together. 

Desert ironwood is relatively heavy, 

very hard and extremely tenacious. 

Because of these characteristics it is 

difficult to work with, but at the same 

time it is also particularly durable and 

weatherproof, which makes it an ideal 

material for razor handles. To match 

the Barber's Notch of the blade, the

handle has a recess towards the tip 

of the blade. This allows a clear view 

of the decorative intermediate piece, 

which is also made of Damascus in

The Damascus straight razors are 

an absolute highlight in the more 

than 100-year history of high quality 

straight razors by Boker. The special 

exclusivity comes from using 

powder metallurgical, stainless 

Damascus steel from Sweden. In 

a very technically demanding and 

complex process, 160 layers of 

Damascus steel are produced in 

a sintering process to create the 

perfect starting material for the fine 

hand sharpening of the blades. The 

traditional extra hollow grind and the 

exceptionally fine edge harmonizes 

the beautiful, extraordinarily fine 

grain of the natural Damascus 

pattern. The 5/8” wide blade has 

a two-sided jimping for a safe 

grip. Boker Damascus straight 

razors are completely handmade

The handles of the noble Boker 

Damascus Burl Birch are made 

from the wood of the burl birch, 

which is native to the far north of 

Europe. The special grain of this 

wood, which due to its unique 

characteristics is often used for 

extraordinary models, is further 

exposed by the stabilization and 

by the complete coloring. The 

modern handle shape fits perfectly 

to the 6/8 inch wide blade made of 

Damascus steel with French head 

and is completed by the fine Boker 

tree emblem, which is inserted 

into the handle by hand. With

SHAVING WITH A FORGED BLADE

I. PREPARATION OF SKIN AND 

BEARD HAIR 

Before shaving, skin and beard hair 

must be prepared carefully. This 

saves both the skin and the blade at 

the same time. For this purpose, it is 

best to shave right after a hot shower 

or apply a hot, wet towel to one's 

face for several minutes. Then splash 

the skin with warm water.

While forged razors and the classic 

wet shave are experiencing a 

renaissance, genuine broadsword 

razors are still rare. For the first 

time in generations, 8/8 inch wide 

razors are back in our range. In 

times when the mighty blades 

were even more common, 8/8 inch 

wide razors with straight heads 

were called "14s". This marking was 

stamped into the tang of the blade 

before the forged blades were 

hardened. Careful not to leave out 

this signature feature, we have 

implemented it in our Boker 14. 

The 8/8 inch wide blade not only 

bears a historical blade etching 

with partial gilding, but also a 

gilded blade spine and tang, which 

is elegantly decorated by a filigree 

and detailed laser engraving. The 

complete polishing of the blade 

and the jimping on both sides of 

the tang round off the features 

of this knife. We have also used 

historical models as a basis for the 

material used for the handle. Made 

of dark, slightly transparent acrylic, 

it blends harmoniously into the 

overall look due to the subtle brass 

inlay. With authentic Boker stamp 

in the blade passage, certificate of

display.

If desired, the skin can also be treated 

with shaving oil before the water. 

Next, apply the thickly beaten foam 

with the brush. The soap should be 

left on for at least 2 minutes. 

II. PREPARING THE RAZOR 

While the shaving soap softens the 

beard, there is enough time to strop 

the straight razor, as described in the 

chapter "Care & Stropping" (see page 

32), on a suspended or mounted 

strop. 

III. SHAVING WITH THE GRAIN 

It may be necessary now to re-apply 

soap with the wet brush. The foam 

has to be kept wet for the duration 

of the entire shave. The handle of the 

razor is folded back so that the blade 

is exposed and forms roughly a right 

angle with the handle. The handle 

is wedged between middle and ring 

finger and points away from the back 

of the hand. Now push the blade over 

the skin along the grain – the direction 

in which the beard grows – with 

gentle pressure. The angle should lie 

between 20° and 45°, the exact value 

depends on feeling and experience. 

Beginners should first shave the 

“easy” parts, like cheeks, and shave 

the rest of their face with the shaving 

method they have used up to now. 

With more practice and skill, they can 

slowly expand the shave to the other 

areas of the face. 

CAUTION: The elbow stands wide 

apart and not in the center of your own 

attention. If you bump into something 

with the elbow you will often get a 

painful cut. 

IV. SHAVING AGAINST THE GRAIN 

After shaving with the grain, you 

can change the shaving direction to 

against the grain for a deeper and 

more thorough shave if desired, 

and if your skin can handle it. To 

do so, wet the skin again and apply 

soap. 

V. AFTER CARE OF SKIN AND 

RAZOR 

After the shave, first rinse skin with 

cold, clear water. This closes the 

pores of the skin and any small 

cuts. The razor is dried and oiled as 

described in the chapter “Care & 

Stropping” (see page 32). Depending 

on your preference, you can apply an 

aftershave or facial lotion.

Style is less a question of elegance 

than of character. The Boker Black 

Amboina proves to perfection that 

these characteristics can be combined 

flawlessly. This expressive 6/8 inch 

straight razor is completely black and for 

the first time features a burnished blade 

made of high strength carbon steel. 

In this special process, the surface of 

the blade is transformed into a black 

oxide layer through treatment with 

acid, which is why it is not possible to 

speak of a coating in the classic sense. 

The extra high ground blade is serrated 

on both sides and thus underlines 

the exclusive character of the Boker 

Black Amboina. Due to the balanced 

weight, the blade glides extremely 

pleasantly and cleanly over the skin. 

The hilt, made of exotic Amboina wood, 

impresses with its strikingly scattered 

grain, which in parts is reminiscent of 

wild carbon fiber. The wood, which 

originates from Southeast Asia, owes this 

special structure to its tuber-like inner 

growths in the area of the roots, which 

gives each piece its unique character. 

The distinctive black and the pleasantly 

smooth surface of the handle are achieved 

by stabilizing the wood. In this special 

process, heated epoxy resin is pressed 

into the wood pores and then cured. 

The bulbous shape of the hilt forms a 

successful contrast to the straight head 

of the blade, expressively emphasizing 

the lines of the Straight Razor. Discreet 

visual accents in the hilt are found 

as eye-catchers in the two nickel 

silver rivets and the silver Boker tree 

shield. Comes with an authentic Boker

2 BOKER S.S. ST. LOUIS 

Promising faraway lands, the gentle sound 

of the waves and the seemingly endless 

expanse of the ocean: on her maiden 

voyage from New York to Southampton 

in June 1895, an exuberant holiday mood 

prevailed on board the S.S. St. Louis. 

At that time, the passenger ship was 

considered one of the prestige objects 

of the influential American Line and 

sweetened the departure to distant Europe 

for up to 1,370 passengers with exclusive 

luxury, spread over a length of 555 feet 

at a pleasant cruising speed of 19 knots 

(approx. 21.75 MPH) - fine appetizers and 

stylish comfort included! 

With its quadruple-expansion steam 

engine, the S.S. St. Louis was one of the 

largest and most powerful ocean liners 

under the American flag at the turn of the 

century. Mainly intended for transatlantic 

liner traffic between America and Europe, 

the steamship was temporarily used as a 

troop carrier during the Spanish-American 

War and the First World War. After this 

turbulent period, the ship was to be fully 

reassigned to liner service, but in 1920 a 

major fire on the ship put an abrupt end to 

this project. 

In the spirit of the transatlantic liner 

launched in 1894, Boker presents the 

American Line S.S. St. Louis, a new edition 

of the historic Boker razor, limited to 300 

pieces worldwide, which brings back the 

glamour of bygone days and transforms 

every shave into a breath of exotic faraway 

places. The imposing ship adorns almost 

the entire front of the polished 6/8" blade 

made of carbon steel. The square head 

used is the perfect blade shape among 

connoisseurs for a precise shave of the 

contours. The blade is stamped with the 

historic H. Boker & Co. stamp and serrated 

on the underside. 

The material used for the handle scales 

is exquisite ebony, which thanks to its 

dark hue is reminiscent of the hull of the 

S.S. St. Louis, while two studs as well 

as the Boker tree emblem harmoniously 

accentuate the crowned hilt. The motif 

on the blade as well as the historical 

stamp have been elaborately restored 

and lasered onto the razor using the most

Even before the Tour de France could 

establish itself as the most important 

cycling race in the world, the former 

heroes tortured themselves on two 

wheels over rough cobblestones, 

dusty gravel roads and sometimes 

short and torturous climbs. Steel 

frame, cotton jersey, casquette, only 

one gear but a heroic moustache were 

the usual equipment for the relentless 

250 km of the classic one-day races. 

This nostalgic magic gave rise to the 

five monuments of cycling that still 

thrill countless cycling fans today. 

The first of these traditional one-day 

classics originated in Belgium and 

France before 1900 and brought fame 

and honor to the winners. 

Boker brings back a piece of history 

and presents the Boker Bicycle Race as 

a new edition of the razor of the same 

name that appeared around 1900. The 

blade of this special model, which 

is limited to 300 pieces worldwide, 

shows a classic bicycle race in a 

picturesque landscape reminiscent 

of historical models. The elaborately 

restored motif, laser-cut in several 

layers, fills almost the entire blade, 

while the historic H. Boker & Co. logo 

adorns the blade's edge. 

The 5/8" wide blade made of resistant 

carbon steel is provided with a square 

head and stands for the versatility, 

robustness and straightness of those 

classic bicycles that had to be prepared 

for all terrains with specific equipment 

- so the Boker Bicycle Race is in no 

way inferior in terms of shaving. The 

classy satin finish and the single-edged 

jimpings round off the heroic profile of 

the razor. The crowned handle made 

of black synthetic has been refined 

with two nickel silver studs. Supplied

2 BOKER BARBER'S CHOICE 

The re-release of the historic Boker 

Barber's Choice has been a matter 

of the heart for us. In the pre-war 

era, the classic straight razor was 

considered the first choice for barbers 

who wanted to use a razor for all 

occasions, thus providing the best 

possible flexibility for shaving. 

Consequently, the razor uses a 5/8" 

wide blade with a Spanish head so 

that even impressive contours can 

be shaved out. The Barber's Choice 

lettering adorns the front of the blade 

according to a historical model and is 

rounded off by the classic H. Boker & 

Co. logo on the blade's edge. 

Only on the basis of a historical 

original razor was it possible to carry 

out an elaborate restoration of the 

lettering, which then found its final 

and detailed implementation in a 

multi-layer laser process. 

The satin-finished blade is made 

of resistant carbon steel and 

is characterized by high edge 

retention. The black handle is made 

of indestructible synthetic, and is 

therefore very easy to clean, not only 

for barbers. The two nickel silver studs 

decorate the handle in a harmonious 

way. Limited to 300 pieces worldwide, 

the Boker Barber's Choice is supplied 

with a certificate of authenticity and

COUNT OF BERG 

Not far from the company headquarters 

of the Boker Manufactory 

in Solingen, we find the hallmark 

of the Bergisches Land region, 

the castle Burg an der Wupper. It 

is also one of the largest castles in 

western Germany, and the largest 

reconstructed castle in North 

Rhine-Westphalia. The famous 

history of Castle Burg is inseparably 

linked to the Duchy Berg 

and the Count of Berg (Haus Berg, 

1068-1225). On this occasion we 

decided to dedicate a series of 

straight razors to the three counts 

of Berg, which symbolizes parts 

of their lives. This tribute is reminiscent 

of the remarkable property 

and influence of the counts 

with impressive adornments made 

from 24-karat gold. 

Adolf II, Count of Berg, built 

the new castle ("Novus Mons," 

today known as Castle Burg) 

at the Wupper, erected on top 

of a preceding fortress from 

the 10th century. The influence 

and wealth of Count Adolf II of 

Berg in the Rheinland-Westfalen 

region was tremendous. In those 

days, it was commonplace to 

split the inheritance among the 

six sons of Adolf. However, this 

represented a problem for the 

house of Berg, since this division 

would reduce the value and cost 

the Berg dynasty its influence. 

Since his eldest son (also Adolf) 

had already died in 1148 at 

Damascus during the Second 

Crusade, his sons Friedrich and 

Bruno entered into the clergy, 

and his youngest son Adolf was 

excluded from the inheritance 

due to his young age. Thus, in 

1160, the Bergish realm was split 

between Adolf's sons Everhard 

and Engelbert. 

EVERHARD, COUNT OF THE MARK 

Everhard, older than Engelbert, 

received the Westphalian 

possessions with the castles 

Altena and Hövel, and the abbeys 

Werden, Essen, and Cappenberg. 

This shows that for Adolf II, 

the Rhine-Franconia possessions 

were likely of lower value 

compared to the Westphalian. 

Everhard founded the Altenaer 

line - his descendants later called 

themselves Counts of the Mark. 

ADOLF III, COUNT OF BERG 

Engelbert I of Berg received 

the Rhine-Franconia inheritance 

and continued the name Berg 

in his family. The center of his 

domain was the castle Burg an 

der Wupper, which was built by 

his father (Adolf II). Engelbert 

I died in 1189 during the Third 

Crusade. His oldest son, Adolf 

III, succeeded him as Count of 

Berg. His reign fell on a period 

of warring conflicts, which led to 

his participation in the Crusades. 

Adolf went to the Holy Land 

during the Fifth Crusade in 

1218, and died from an epidemic 

on August 7 of that year, as 

Commander of the Rhine and 

Friesian siege troops at Damiette 

in the Nile Delta. He had no son, 

therefore the Altena-Berg branch 

ceased. 

ENGELBERT II, COUNT OF BERG 

After the death of Adolf III, the 

House of Limburg, into which 

Adolf's daughter Irmgard had 

married, staked its claim to the 

entire Bergish estate. While 

the daughter of Adolf III was 

entitled to an inheritance even 

in that time, Engelbert II, the 

brother of Adolf III, claimed 

the inheritance for himself. 

The resulting dispute was not 

settled in a legal process, but 

by violence over the course of 

two feuds. Engelbert rejected 

the Limburg claim through the 

force of arms and took over 

the rule of the County Berg as 

Engelbert II. Engelbert II, Count 

of Berg, later called "The Holy," 

was also known as Engelbert 

I, Archbishop of Cologne. With 

his murder in 1225, the Bergish 

counts in this line came to an 

end, as the male line of the 

Bergish counts ended with the 

death of Engelbert II. As a result, 

Berg went to House Limburg, 

which was thus finally able to 

assert its inheritance claim.

The Boker Abalone combines 

extraordinary design and 

outstanding performance. The 

die-forged blade of this exceptional 

straight razor consists of 

carbon steel O1 (1.2510), hardened 

to 59-61 HRC. Thanks to its 

superior characteristics and excellent 

edge retention, this carbon 

steel is the perfect material for

Apart from classic materials that 

have been defining the popular 

Boker Straight Razor for decades, 

we are always looking for modern 

and innovative natural material 

combinations, offering a special 

look or feel, that our customers 

will love. White gold, sea snails 

or sea ears are just some other 

names of the abalone. 

These mollusks live off the 

coasts of Australia, New Zealand, 

Japan, China, Mexico and South 

Africa, attaching themselves to 

rocks just a few meters below 

the surface. 

As a great delicacy, they are 

desirable enough to have caused 

entire gang wars in the past. 

Today, the precious natural 

product is raised in water 

farms. The beautiful shells, with 

their almost artificial looking 

shimmer, have always been used 

as decoration, implements or 

material for jewelry, intarsia or 

mother-of-pearl clips. 

Paua are shellfish of the abalone 

genus, but unlike abalones they 

are only found in the unspoiled 

nature of New Zealand's coastal 

waters. They have been used by 

the Maori for many centuries as 

traditional body ornaments, and 

are still used today as decoration 

for figurines, weapons and 

meeting houses. 

Employing cutting edge production 

methods, a wafer-thin layer of 

colorful abalone or paua is 

applied to a carrier and encased 

in transparent acrylic. The 

resulting highly resistant material 

obtained in this way is ideally 

suited for the production of razor 

handles, and impresses with its 

extraordinary play of colors and 

three-dimensional appearance. 

All razors in this impressive series 

are equipped with a jimping on 

both sides, and are of course 

ground extra hollow with a wall 

(sound). The authentic Boker 

stamp in the blade passage is 

driven in before the blade is 

hardened, and thus marks each 

of our quality Solingen products.

we already offer, many barbers have 

been asking for a straight razor knife 

with a stainless steel receptacle. The 

receptacle of the Boker Pro Barberettes is 

designed to accommodate a half Double 

Edge (43mm standard blade) and hold it 

securely between the two stainless steel 

parts. This system has been used by 

professional barbers and hairdressers for 

many years before we optimized it: 

• The geometry and size of the Boker Pro 

Barberette follows that of the premium

CARE & STROPPING OF STRAIGHT RAZORS 

SHARPENING & ACCESSORIES 

Caring for a straight razor mainly 

entails preserving the razor's edge 

and protecting it from corrosion. 

The sharpness of the razor mainly 

comes from regular "stropping" on 

linen and untreated leather and, 

after a while, on leather treated 

with a grinding paste. This requires 

a bit of practice but can be learned 

quickly. While with a pocket or 

kitchen knife, the difficulty lies in 

maintaining the correct angle, the 

geometry of the straight razor helps 

us a lot in this respect. The precisely 

balanced ratio of the very thick back 

of the blade to the whisper-thin 

edge ensures that you automatically 

get the right angle on the edge 

when the back touches the leather 

strop (see fig. 1).

BLADE 

First, touch the back to the leather 

and then carefully move the edge 

to touch the strop. Now pull the 

straight razor with slight pressure in 

the direction of the back (away from 

the edge) across the entire length 

of the strop. While doing so, move 

the razor slightly diagonally across 

the leather. This way you can cover 

the entire length of the edge with 

the leather. The back and the edge 

must be in constant contact with 

the strop (see fig. 2).

It is very important to flip the razor 

over its back when you reach the 

end of the strop. UNDER NO 

CIRCUMSTANCE should you flip 

the straight razor over the edge – 

this would round off the edge again, 

i.e. blunt it (see fig. 3).

The untreated leather does not 

remove material from the edge, i.e., 

it does not sharpen the razor in the 

usual sense. You can image the burr 

of the edge microscopically like a 

comb whose teeth are bent in all 

directions after shaving. The strop 

realigns these teeth into an even 

burr. If available, one should use 

the linen side in exactly the same 

manner as the leather strop before 

stropping. 

The fiber of the linen is soft, the 

mesh of the textile, however, is 

rough. This allows the linen to grip 

the burr and align it. The weave of 

the textile catches dirt and loose 

steel particles which could damage 

the sensitive edge when pressed 

against the strop. The final use of the 

strop makes the resulting edge finer. 

You should strop the razor BEFORE, 

and not AFTER shaving. Steel has a 

certain level of self-healing power, 

or “memory.” After stress, the burr 

slowly and partially stands itself up 

again. If you violently rip the burr 

up with the strop immediately after 

shaving, this stresses the material, 

which shortens the life expectancy 

of the burr and, in the long run, of 

the razor. The razor should rest for 

at least 24 hours after the shave – 

but 48 hours or more is ideal, so 

if you shave every day, you should 

own at least two straight razors. Our 

grandfathers therefore often had 

sets for the entire week, containing 

7 razors. 

If the cutting performance of the 

razor decreases over time despite 

regular stropping, the razor should 

be stropped on a second strop 

treated with special red grinding 

paste. This process actually does 

remove a minute amount of steel 

from the blade. It is not that easy 

to answer the obvious question of 

after how many shaves this should 

be done, as every beard is different. 

Many men only shave partially and 

contour their beards – the stress on 

the blade is different in each case. 

The user should strop with paste 

when the razor begins to pinch 

when shaving. 

After stropping with paste, you 

should clean the blade thoroughly, 

and strop it once more on untreated 

leather. In order to protect it from 

corrosion, dry the blade carefully 

and thoroughly after shaving, and 

then oil it with an acid-free, viscous 

oil. Camellia oil has proven to be 

excellent for this purpose (see page 

33).
