unpunished? Why did Abel have to die? God, Father, Lord, do you feel any remorse? Why, so
patently in the face of justice, did the murderer prosper to the point of founding a city and
having children like an ordinary man with nobody’s blood on his hands? I don’t want to be
disrespectful, but you always were and always will be a double-dealing god, with two faces,
two sets of scales and two yardsticks.
I don’t believe my death will save mankind, or that without my death mankind would be more
doomed than it already is. You can’t imagine, God, Father, Lord, how complicated and
unfathomable human beings are. In any case, I have done everything you commanded. And
that is the reason why a man is dying on the cross.
SEVENTH WORD
God, Father, Lord, into your hands I commend my spirit, and this body that it inhabited will
remain pinned to the cross until what remains of me is laid in the tomb, from which I shall
rise on the third day, if the words you put into my mouth for my followers to hear are true.
Peter rebuked me for them, taking me aside and saying, “God forbid! Such a thing will never
happen to you.” And I answered him, “Get behind me, Satan. You are a hindrance to me,
because you understand things not according to God’s `purpose, but according to man’s”.
That is what I said to him, but now, God, Father, Lord, now that my spirit is in your hands,
allow me to try and understand things like a man. Will my body, once the spirit has left it, be
able to rise and leave the tomb, rolling away the stone that blocks its entrance? And I have
another question. What will happen to me over the next three days? Will my flesh begin to
rot? Shall I appear to Mary Magdalene with the first signs of corruption on my face and
hands? I have lived in the world as a man for thirty years, first as a child, then a youth, and as
an adult, until today. If I am telling you things that you already know, it’s just so that you will
understand why I will appear to Mary Magdalene before anybody else.
Let’s get it over with. I have played my part as best I could. Only the future can tell if this
spectacle has been worthwhile. And now, God, Father, Lord, one last question: Who am I?
Really and truly, who am I?
