Princes Island’s<br />

Visit the peaceful and<br />

scenic Princes’ Islands for<br />

a relaxing day away from<br />

the hustle and bustle of<br />

Istanbul. They are only a<br />

scenic ferry ride away from<br />

the main ferry terminal in<br />

the historic part of Istanbul. As there is no motor traffic on the Islands,<br />

the only transport being horse and cart, they are incredibly peaceful.<br />

During the Byzantine period, princes and other royalty were exiled on<br />

the islands, and later members of the Ottoman sultans family were<br />

exiled there too, lending the islands their present name. They were<br />

taken by the Ottoman fle<strong>et</strong> during the siege of Constantinople in 1453.<br />

Beginning with the 19th century the islands became a popular resort<br />

for Istanbul’s wealthy and still continues to be so. Victorian era cottages<br />

and houses are authentically preserved in all their architectural beauty<br />

on the islands. Although all of them offer som<strong>et</strong>hing special and worth<br />

seeing, the largest, Buyukada, has the best examples.<br />

you will view spectacular floor shows featuring<br />

famous Belly Dancers as well as Anatolian Folklore<br />

floor (200 ft) of this historic tower you will enjoy<br />

an unforg<strong>et</strong>table view of the city, the mouth of the<br />

martyred saint who was bishop of Myra. After lunch, (if weather<br />

conditions permit) motorboat ride to Kekova Bay to explore the<br />

ruins of the Sunken City in the crystalline waters, and the Lycian<br />

sarcophagi of Simena, one of which emerging from the sea has<br />

be<strong>com</strong>e the symbol of pr<strong>et</strong>ty Kalekoy village. Lunch during<br />

sightseeing. Drive back to Antalya.<br />

IZMIR<br />

Aphrodisias, Hierapolis, Pamukkale<br />

Upon arrival in Izmir, transfer to Aphrodisias the ancient city<br />

dedicated to Aphrodite, the god<strong>des</strong>s of Beauty, Love and Fertility,<br />

also famous for its school of sculpture: visit the stadium, which<br />

is the best preserved in Anatolia, the Temple of Aphrodite,<br />

the T<strong>et</strong>rapylon, the Theatre and the Museum. Continue to<br />

Pamukkale, a unique natural site. Visit this Cotton Castle where<br />

the hot waters, leaving their limestone deposits, have created<br />

an unreal landscape with p<strong>et</strong>rified waterfalls and basins; and<br />

Hierapolis, an ancient Roman health spa whose well preserved<br />

necropolis is one of the largest in the ancient world. Drive back<br />

to Kusadasi.<br />

Morning, drive to Priene, which was one of the most active ports<br />

of the Ionian Confederacy, to visit the ol<strong>des</strong>t city laid out on a<br />

(hippodamian) grid plan with the Temple of Athena, the Agora, the<br />

Bouleuterion, the Prytaneion, the Theatre... Continue to Mil<strong>et</strong>us,<br />

home for philosophers such as Thales, Anaximander, Anaximemes<br />

and the town planner Hippodamus. You will visit the site which<br />

inclu<strong>des</strong> the Theatre, the Baths of Faustina, the Gymnasium, the<br />

Nymphaeum... Mil<strong>et</strong>us was connected by a Sacred Road to the<br />

sanctuary of Didyma where you will discover the colossal Temple<br />

of Apollo where crowds of pilgrims came to consult the oracle.<br />

Side, Perge, Aspendos<br />

Morning, through the coastal plain of Pamphylia, drive to Aspendos,<br />

whose 2C AD theatre is the best preserved Roman theatre<br />

in Asia Minor, and which is still used today for performances and<br />

during festivals. Nearby, you will see the remains of the large<br />

aqueduct. After lunch, continue to Perge, and visit this other<br />

Hellenistico-Roman ancient city. The site inclu<strong>des</strong> the ruins of<br />

the Hellenistic gates, the colonnaded stre<strong>et</strong>, the Nymphaeum, the<br />

beautiful agora surrounded by Corinthian columns, the Roman<br />

baths, the stadium, the theatre, the remains of the first church<br />

and the basilica. Drive back to Antalya.<br />

Ephesus & Virgin Mary<br />

Morning, depart for Ephesus, one of the most prestigious city in<br />

the ancient world. You will stroll along the Marble Stre<strong>et</strong> to see<br />

the Agora, the Odeon, the Nympheaum of Trajan, the Temple of<br />

Hadrian; you will walk past the Roman villas and continue to the<br />

Celsius Library and the Theatre where St Paul preached. In the<br />

vicinity, you will also visit the remains of the Temple of Artemis<br />

which was one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the museum<br />

which displays, b<strong>et</strong>ween others, two beautiful statues of Artemis,<br />

St. John’s Basilica with the Tomb of the Apostle, and the House<br />

of the Virgin Mary which has been <strong>des</strong>ignated by the Vatican as<br />

a place of pilgrimage and which is located in a remote s<strong>et</strong>ting in<br />

the heights of Ephesus. Lunch during sightseeing. You will end the<br />

day visiting Sirince with its old 19th century Greek houses which<br />

have been nicely restored. This picturesque and charming village<br />

is s<strong>et</strong> in the hills above Selcuk a few miles away from Ephesus.<br />

Drive back to Izmir.<br />

Jewish Heritage - Izmir & Sardis<br />

Sardis, the renowned capital of the ancient Lydians, has the<br />

largest synagogue of the ancient Diaspora. Discovered in early<br />

1960s, this synagogue is unique with its location within ancient<br />

bath-gymnasium <strong>com</strong>plex in a city with a major pagan deity as<br />

Artemis. After Sardis we will visit Izmir which still has a sizable<br />

Jewish <strong>com</strong>munity. Home of the false Messiah Sabb<strong>et</strong>ai Sevi,<br />

Izmir has a cluster of old synagogues in the mark<strong>et</strong> area, which<br />

was put in the watch list of World Monuments Fund in 2004.<br />
