L’existenced’unesensibilitéthermiqueé<strong>le</strong>véechez<strong>le</strong>svertébrésestunehypo<strong>thèse</strong>centra<strong>le</strong><strong>de</strong><strong>la</strong><br />
théorie <strong>de</strong> Farmer, et <strong>le</strong> début <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> vie embryonnaire semb<strong>le</strong> particulièrement sensib<strong>le</strong> aux<br />

aux sta<strong>de</strong>s prénataux. Une <strong>de</strong>s hypo<strong>thèse</strong>s associées à <strong>la</strong> théorie <strong>de</strong> Farmer est qu’une<br />
amélioration,mêmelégère,<strong>de</strong>sconditions<strong>de</strong>vieembryonnaireseraitextrêmementavantageuse.<br />
Contrairement aux endothermes, <strong>le</strong>s vertébrés ectothermes possè<strong>de</strong>nt <strong>de</strong>s moyens réduits <strong>de</strong><br />
régu<strong>la</strong>tion physiologique <strong>de</strong> <strong>le</strong>ur température. Ils sont donc particulièrement sensib<strong>le</strong>s aux<br />
fluctuations thermiques <strong>de</strong> <strong>le</strong>ur environnement. Cependant, si <strong>le</strong>s vertébrés ectothermes<br />
produisent une cha<strong>le</strong>ur métabolique négligeab<strong>le</strong>, ils ont développé une diversité <strong>de</strong> stratégies<br />
parenta<strong>le</strong>spourprotéger<strong>le</strong>sembryonsendéveloppement<strong>de</strong>svariationsthermiques.<br />
