NEWSMAKERS by Richard Burnett
he was scared shitless. “I loved watching the rehearsals.
That was emotionally fulfilling. The night of
the premiere I was a wreck. I hated it. The idea that
people were ready to devour my creativity was upsetting.”
Rufus won’t have to put up with much more until
Prima Donna has its North American premiere at
Toronto’s Luminato arts festival in the spring of 2010.
Expect Toronto critics to pounce since Rufus last year
said, “I hate visiting Toronto. I can’t stand it. The
place drives me mad. I have friends there, I work
there, but I find it really hard to like. I will have to
go back there, but I wish I didn't have to.”
Rufus may live in NYC, but – as his feelings about
Toronto clearly reveal – he remains a true Montrealer.
Rufus also hopes to bring Prima Donna to L’Opéra de
Montréal. “There’s also interest in Paris and New
York,” he says.
Rufus is currently touring with his band, cross-promoting
the September release of his new CD/DVD Milwaukee
at Last!
“This is the golden era of my life and I'm just enjoying
it,” Rufus says. “That being said, I still want to
be on the charts! I want to makes videos, win a
Grammy. I'm still a pop star!”
What I really want to ask Rufus, though, is about a
recent news story headlined “Wainwright swapped
orgies for opera.” During rehearsals for Prima Donna,
Rufus chose to live in nearby Yorkshire rather than
Manchester, a gay party town. Rufus, a former crystal
meth addict, wanted to avoid temptation – an
epiphany that came to him, he told the reporter, at
an orgy.
“There was a lot of very bad stuff going on and I immediately
realized at one point it wasn’t me,” Rufus
recalled. “So I said, ‘I’m going to leave,’ and I very
dramatically announced to the orgy, ‘I am going
back to society and I want to live.’ I went out and
then I got about a block away and I realized I had
forgotten my wallet and I had to go back! That was
so pathetic.”
I bring up the subject with Rufus, but then his cellphone
dies as he’s sitting in his car at the beach in
Long Island.
“Rufus?”
I guess I'll have to wait until interview number 20.
