Président du Comité Colbert
—
Chairman of the Board of Comité Colbert
perspectives d’avenir.
True to its core mission of promoting French
Art de Vivre, the Comité Colbert rang in
the New Year in Istanbul by joining forces
with the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art
(“Istanbul Modern”) to address the issue of
modernity and by holding a “Festival Colbert”
on the same theme.
Pursuing another key mission – the
transmission of knowledge – the Comité
Colbert concentrated on the younger
generation: it worked with the Colbert Labo
network of young executives from member
companies; extended its career information
efforts to introduce prospective schoolleavers
to the luxury crafts; and continued
the Chaire Colbert program for ENSAAMA’s
postgraduate students.
Seeking to gain more clout with the EU
institutions, it reached out the German
luxury industry, holding its General Assembly
in Berlin to mark the 50th anniversary of the
Friendship Treaty.
But one thing really strikes me about all
of these endeavours. They show that each
Colbert house feels like it belongs to a group
with a common cause and shared values.
Solidarity, which has always been the Comité
Colbert’s biggest strength, is what opens up
bright prospects for French luxury in future.

COMITÉ COLBERT — 2013
If the French luxury
sector is in good health
today, it’s because our
luxury houses have been
working together for sixty
years to anticipate trends
and find new markets
En 2013, les maisons
LOOKING
FORWARD, DRIVING
GROWTH
La stratégie du Comité Colbert sur
les marchés émergents l’a emmené dans
les années 1980, au Japon. La décennie
suivante était consacrée au marché
américain. Depuis dix ans, les maisons du
luxe français ont multiplié leurs actions
en Chine ( 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009),
en Russie (2007), en Inde (2006, 2008),
au Moyen-Orient (2010, 2011, 2012) ainsi
qu’au Brésil (2012).
The Colbert strategy for emerging markets
concentrated on Japan in the 1980s and on
the North American market in the 1990s.
During the last decade, French luxury houses
have stepped up the pace, planning events
in China (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009), Russia
(2007), India (2006, 2008) and the Arabian
Gulf countries (2010, 2011, 2012), not to
mention Brazil (2012).
Après avoir longtemps exploré
le Japon et les Etats-Unis, le
Comité Colbert a souhaité
aborder d’autres pays : Chine,
Russie, Moyen-Orient... Peut-on
maisons.
s’y prendre. Le Comité Colbert amène par
le consensus, à des choix. Nous décidons
ensemble où l’on va porter nos efforts.
C’est un processus long et démocratique,
validé par la Commission
Internationale et Culturelle,
puis voté en Assemblée générale.
On identifie les pays qui,
parce qu’ils présentent une
croissance significative, valent
la peine d’y investir. Quand
Alors qu’on
Plusieurs
maisons ont signé des contrats avec
des agents ou des distributeurs. Pour les
marques déjà en place, cela a
resserré les liens. Avec la Chine,
ce fut tout aussi décisif. Nous
sortions du boycott. Cela a donné
une image forte de modernité
au luxe français. Certaines
maisons ne savaient pas comment
communiquer avec ce pays.
Cette opération a généré un déclic
collectif.
PURSUING CULTURAL DIPLOMACY
After focusing for years on Japan and
the United States, the Comité Colbert has
turned to other countries and parts of the
world, including China, Russia and the
Middle East. Is this strategy designed to
win new markets for French luxury?
Yves Carcelle Yes, it is. In the 19th century,
luxury was the prerogative of a few European
countries and North America. After World
War II, it was Japan’s turn to become a good
client country for French luxury. Observers
have noted that, in the last decade – or the
last two decades, according to some experts
– the appetite for luxury has
“gone global”. This is a largescale
phenomenon, as all of
our members are well aware.
Knowing that it is vital to
anticipate market trends, many
of us travel the world in search
of bright prospects. Turkey is
a case in point. The country
is seeing a very high rate of
economic growth. It was by no
means a matter of chance if the
Comité Colbert decided to hold
a “Festival Colbert” in Istanbul
and sponsor a cultural
exhibition on modernity, a key
issue for Turkish society, as
shown by recent events.
What selection criteria are
used to pick an emerging
market for an event?
YC The Colbert
membership is composed of
luxury houses of all kinds.
Some are quick to take the
lead, others less so. Some don’t
have enough manpower in the country to
find out what they need to know. They are
more reluctant to undertake an international
venture on their own, not knowing how to
go about it. The Comité Colbert arrives
at decisions by consensus. We decide
collectively where to target our efforts.
Our decision-making is a long, democratic
process involving approval by the relevant
Commission and a vote by the General
Assembly. We choose one of the high-growth
countries worth investing in and, internally,
adopt a global approach. The Economic
Commission produces studies about the
country concerned and holds lectures to
familiarize our members with that particular
emerging market.
For ten years, you have served as
President of a Commission whose focus
is both cultural and international. How
does this dual approach work in building
influence for the luxury sector at the
international level?
YC The cultural aspect of our work
is vital. One key Colbert mission is to
collectively promote French Art de Vivre by
cultivating existing affinities with emerging
countries. We organize events using different
formats to communicate the cultural aspect
of French luxury to these new consumers. In
2003, we set up a special circuit in Paris to
show how China has always inspired French
creators. In 2007, we celebrated the history of
Colbert houses in Russia, which goes back to
the days of Catherine II. In 2009,
more than one million Chinese online users
took a 3-D virtual journey to the heart of
French luxury. In 2010, the Comité Colbert
conjured up marvellous visions in Dubai with
icons of French style and demonstrations
by master artisans. While many associate
the Middle East with shopping, the Comité
Colbert preferred to focus on its culture,
poetry and calligraphy in publishing
the words of luxury in Arabic. The idea was
to elevate our dialogue with these
countries rather than interact only at the
commercial level.
How does this collective Colbert strategy
fit in with the strategy of each individual
member?
YC The Comité Colbert provides
a forum for sharing best practices and
looking to the future collectively. It does not
coordinate commercial initiatives taken by
COMITÉ COLBERT — 2013
individual companies. It’s up to each member
to choose its own agents and locations. This
being said, the group strategy formulated by
the Comité Colbert is intended to complement
that of its members.
While some of our houses are competitors,
they work hand in hand within the Comité
Colbert. If French luxury speaks with one
voice, there is a better chance that its message
will be heard and understood. Our products,
wines and restaurants can really shine in
satisfactory business conditions and we
can help bring about such conditions by
joining forces. Our “Festival
Colbert” events also show the
value of teamwork. Those of
our members already present
on the target market lend a
hand to those that do not yet
have local premises. These
“Colbert Duos” demonstrate
a spirit of sharing and
solidarity that many other
industrial sectors would be
well advised to cultivate. The
fact that smaller businesses
are joining our association
serves to strengthen
the presence of larger
companies. The overall
impression is one of unity,
which helps French luxury
in its influence-building
endeavours.
Can one measure the
impact of this strategy
on sales in a particular
target market? What does
the feedback tell you?
YC Operations like the “Festival
Colbert” convey our message very effectively.
We generally get good local media coverage,
because journalists are impressed when forty
or fifty company chairmen attend the event,
give interviews and meet with local officials.
And it’s all the better when a French minister
accompanies the Colbert delegation! Last
January, Nicole Bricq, the French Minister
of Foreign Trade, made the trip to Istanbul
with us. Several Colbert members signed
contracts with agents or distributors, while
those already present in Turkey strengthened
their local business connections. Our project
in China got equally good results. It took
place when the boycott was just ending. This
undertaking gave French luxury a strong
image of modernity. Some of our members
didn’t know how to communicate there, but
this operation made them all realize that “yes,
they can do it!”
La Turquie, nouvel eldorado du luxe ?
C’est encore timide (2%) au regard
des 84% de chiffres d’affaires réalisés
à l’export par les maisons françaises
de luxe. Mais, il y a des signes qui ne
trompent pas. En effet, cette part est en
forte progression.
Is Turkey the new El Dorado for the luxury
industry? For French luxury houses, Turkey
only accounts for 2% of total sales, a small
slice of the 84% generated by exports. But
the signs are definitely there. For one thing,
Turkey’s share of exports is growing fast. In
the last five years, the French luxury houses
present in Turkey have seen double-digit
sales growth (30% on average), so they have
every reason to be optimistic. This did not
go unnoticed by the Comité Colbert, whose
mission is, among other things, to help French
luxury identify the markets of the future.
Many prominent French luxury houses share
a venerable history with Turkey. Christofle,
for one, has been present there since the 19th
century. As a matter of fact, France’s first
permanent embassy was to the Ottoman
Empire in the days of Henri II, which helps
explain why France and Turkey have so many
long-standing cultural affinities. However,
in reaching out to Turkey in 2013, the
Comité Colbert preferred to cultivate a more
contemporary affinity, that of modernity.
By promoting cultural diversity, the Comité
Colbert wished to salute Turkey’s dynamic
artistic scene. The association initiated and
was the main sponsor of a contemporary art
exhibition entitled “Modernity? Perspectives
from Turkey and France” at the Istanbul
Modern. This strong theme refers to a
challenge shared by French luxury houses,
whose identity is often rooted in their history.
Hailed by the press, the exhibition presented
dual perspectives on modernity as expressed
in the art of eleven artists working in Turkey
or France, among them Nevin Aladag,
Kader Attia, Fikret Atay, Cyprien Gaillard,
It took three years to plan this exhibition,
which ran from January to May 2013
and presented twenty works of art, of which
two were commissions. A “Festival Colbert”
was organized in connection with the show.
The Festival opening, attended by about
twenty Colbert chairmen and Nicole Bricq,
French Minister of Foreign Trade, was
followed by a series of events from January 16
to 22. The Minister’s presence indicated how
much the French government values
the contribution made by its luxury industry
to building influence for France in the world.
The Festival provided an ideal framework
for meetings and contacts. Twenty-six
of our houses opened their doors to the
Istanbulites and proposed their own take on
modernity through the prism of creativity, i.e.
artistic works inspired by house collections,
installations and classics or created
especially for the occasion. Events celebrating
the modernity of French luxury took place
at the Istinye Park Mall and in the Nisantasi
part of town. Through its involvement
in the cultural life of Istanbul, the French
luxury sector played a socially responsible
role by hosting events that improve mutual
understanding between the two cultures.

STRENGTH
IN
NUMBERS
The Comité Colbert plays as a team! Its
international events and actions are
organized in a spirit of sharing and mutual
assistance. That’s only one of the reasons
that this association is unique. Founded in
1954, it currently numbers 78 French luxury
houses and 14 cultural institutions among
its membership. Within the Comité Colbert,
members put aside business rivalries and
act in concert to gain recognition for all
sectors conveying the FrenchArt de Vivre.
For France, the economic impact is extremely
positive. This modus operandi helps French
luxury houses, even small ones, gain an
early foothold on the emerging markets
that drive growth in our sector, stimulating
competitiveness and employment in France
and Europe. «Once again, the Comité Colbert
shows the way! Large firms entrenched
in a promising country allow SMEs to
benefit from their experience on the local
market as well as their brand recognition
and investments, which gives the SMEs
a boost in their business development,»
pointed out Elisabeth Ponsolle des Portes,
President and CEO of the Comité Colbert.
Many of our members team up in “Colbert
Duos” for external events such as the
“Festival Colbert” in Istanbul. The system
has been a big success ever since it was
introduced in 2005. That year, Baccarat
was Chanel’s guest in China, then again
in the United Arab Emirates five years later.
Mellerio accepted hospitality from Hermès
in Dubai. Louis Vuitton shared premises
with Pierre Frey in Russia in 2007. These
pairings are arranged under the supervision
of the Comité Colbert, which handles the
event planning and management. This year,
the most recent “Festival Colbert” was held
from January 16 to 22, 2013 in Istanbul.
Cartier a invité Cognac Rémy Martin,
Christofle, on vantait Hédiard
la maison Hermès a accueilli
les créations « haute couture » du célèbre
pâtissier Pierre Hermé Paris dont
c’était la première participation à un
« Festival Colbert ».
relate Michel Rouget, PDG d’Ercuis.
“The Colbert duo
Several Colbert
houses that already
do business in Turkey
a chance to discover unique French houses.
welcomed Haute Pâtisserie creations by the
renowned pastry chef Pierre Hermé, whose
company was taking part in a “Festival
in close contact throughout the
process of creating the windows.
It was a success.» Enthusiasm was also
forthcoming from Ercuis, which Louis
Vuitton featured in style along with Baccarat.
«The Festival Colbert allowed us to raise
our visibility, which allowed us to redefine
our business ties with our local sales
agent,» noted Michel Rouget, President
and Chairman of Ercuis. «Since the event,
orders are up substantially, especially
since the opening of a new showroom last
spring. «We’ve adopted a more aggressive
and structured strategy.» For the smaller
members, it’s very reassuring to get a warm
welcome from a fellow member. Obviously,
they are reluctant to attack a new market on
their own. The Colbert Duo system is a big
asset for French luxury houses, which know
how to cooperate based on shared values.

The Comité Colbert has gained three new
members: Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée, le
Restaurant Guy Savoy Paris, l’Atelier de Joël
Robuchon Étoile.
This trio of prominent French culinary
figures have joined Taillevent and Oustau
de Baumanière, both reputed and venerable
establishments that already belong to
the Comité Colbert. Gastronomy, a key
component of French identity and Art de
Vivre, has been officially recognized as such:
UNESCO has put it on the Representative
List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of
Humanity. French chefs cultivate excellence,
demonstrate culinary expertise and play an
active role in enhancing the prestige of French
taste in the world. With the admission of these
famous chefs and businessmen, the Comité
Colbert confirms its interest in more recent
companies.
The arrival of these new names illustrates
the dynamics of the luxury sector, which is
constantly reinventing itself.
This «entering class» was co-opted at
the General Assembly on June 27 in Berlin
at the same time as a high-profile associate
member: the Musée d’Orsay.
The Colbert membership now numbers
THE CHAIRE
LONG LIVE
COLBERT
C’est au sein de
l’ENSAAMA à Paris
qu’est reconduite pour
3 ans l’expérience
de la Chaire Colbert.
At ENSAAMA (Paris),
it was announced that the
Chaire Colbert project
would carry on for 3 more
years.
One aspect of the Colbert mission is to help
transmit the values of French luxury
to the next generation. The Comité Colbert
launched the Young Designers Competition
in 1987, which was a big success. In 2011,
it decided to vary its action toward schools
and provide support for the teaching of design
in France. This led to the idea of creating a
Chaire Colbert. In the words of our President
and CEO, Elisabeth Ponsolle des Portes:
“We had three objectives: give French schools
a broader audience, offer students a rare
opportunity to work with a luxury company
and help create a pool of young talent
for our members to draw on.” A number
of schools were invited to submit proposals.
Finally, the Comité Colbert selected the École
nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et
des métiers d’art (ENSAAMA), which shares
its ambitions and its values with respect
to creation, innovation and research. At the
time, ENSAAMA was introducing its
Master 2. Design Strategies course, offered
jointly with the Université d’Evry Val
d’Essonne. “Our respective faculties saw a
need for postgraduate training in the applied
arts,” noted Marie-José Mascioni, director of
ENSAAMA. “The aim of the Master program
is to equip students to think, create and
initiation bienveillante ». Quatorze
maisons parmi lesquelles Chanel, Dior,
Hermès, Boucheron, Ercuis… ont jusqu’à
présent apporté leur concours à cet
apprentissage. Bien réelle, l’implication
des entreprises ne se limite pas
program. The involvement of
host companies does not stop
at accepting an intern. They
propose forward-looking
research topics, subject to
ENSAAMA approval. Students
are exposed to the codes and values of the
luxury industry. They attend workshops,
seminars, lectures and discussion groups,
with plenty of opportunity for constructive
give-in-take with professionals. “We’ve
noticed that the luxury houses treat our
students like professionals, which elicits a
quick and positive response from the young
people” pointed out Marie-José Mascioni.
The Chaire Colbert has accomplished its
objective and provided a forum for real
mutual enrichment. The more students learn
about the luxury industry, the better equipped
they will be to transcend clichés and gain a
better understanding of the values, knowà
ce seul stage. Les maisons en accord
avec l’équipe enseignante, proposent
des sujets de recherche prospective sous
forme d’ateliers, avec des interventions
(séminaires, conférences, rencontres)
qui permettent aux étudiants de se
familiariser avec les codes et les valeurs
des maisons du luxe. Au contact
de professionnels, s’élabore un échange
constructif.
A travers cela,
“The Chaire
for real mutual
enrichment”
demand. It gives our
students a chance to
get work experience,
which will help them
find jobs that entail
responsibility”.
After three years, the Comité Colbert
conducted a program review. A remarkable
60% of its graduates found a fixed-term or
permanent job after their internship (100%
in the year following graduation). Sixtytwo
students have completed the Master 2
program: 33% of the first two graduating
classes have found jobs at Colbert houses
and 50% of the Class of 2013 an internship.
The Chaire Colbert offers students a sixmonth
internship at a luxury company that
introduces them to the real world of the
luxury business. So far, 14 Colbert companies
(e.g. Chanel, Dior, Hermès, Boucheron and
Ercuis) have taken part in this apprenticeship
how and dynamics involved. On October
17, the work accomplished by the first three
classes of graduates from the Master 2.
Design Strategies program was presented at
ENSAAMA in Paris. This coincided with the
press event announcing the extension of the
Chaire Colbert for three more years. All of the
parties involved were happy to see this fruitful
relationship continue. “This partnership will
help ENSAAMA and the Université d’Evry
meet a major challenge: their goal is to
compete with other international academic
and rank among the best” said Philippe
Houdy, President of the Université d’Evry Val
the Comité Colbert, recalled that creativity
plays a key role in the luxury industry. It
enables each luxury house to refresh its
inspiration in keeping with the tastes of the
d’entretenir ». Les nombreux travaux
exposés témoignaient de la qualité et
de « l’impertinence pertinente », chère à
Marie-José Mascioni, des élèves français
et étrangers qui ont intégré ce master
bilingue, tous venus d’horizons divers
“High-quality
projects full of
pertinent
creativity.” Many of the
works displayed were
of high quality
and full of “pertinent
impertinence” dear
to Marie-José
Mascioni’s heart. The Master 2. Design
Strategies program is a bilingual
postgraduate program for French
and international students already in
possession of a design-related degree (e.g.
industrial creation, visual or multimedia
communication, and spatial or packaging
design). In fact, this course is a blueprint for
cross-disciplinary study.
This type of approach is crucial asset in
an ever-changing world requiring a broad
palette of knowledge. By and large, the
students took a bold approach to the topics
assigned by participating houses.
For instance, the project by Irvin Anneix and
Amélie Hall dusted off the old clichés,
giving Limoges porcelain a whole
new twist to celebrate Bernardaud’s
150th anniversary. “When you use
unlikely combinations,
you get high impact. We took
a motif from traditional porcelain design
codes and updated it with a dose of caustic
black humour,” said the authors. Along with
the other graduates of the Master 2. Design
Strategies program, they are listed with
their projects in a directory just published
After “The Art of Pleasing” the theme chosen
for 2011 this year, twice as many students,
eighty in all, tackled the assigned topic:
“A Day to Celebrate.” It certainly seemed
to inspire the ten project teams, judging
by the diversity and quality of their
respective treatments. The projects were
presented to the public last May. Ten Colbert
houses took part in the second workshop, up
from six in 2011. This time around, the initial
six (Bernardaud, Christian Dior, Cognac
Rémy Martin and Yves Delorme) were joined
by Guerlain, John Lobb, Champagne Krug,
Lorenz Bäumer Joaillier, Faïenceries de
Paris and London, with a tight schedule
of tours and talks to help students develop
a good understanding of the brand identity
concerned before tackling their project
for the workshop. The second workshop got
the benefit of past experience and yielded
results of even higher quality. David Caméo,
President of the Creation Commission at the
Comité Colbert, was pleased with the final
submissions and told students: “You’ve all
shown personal commitment and creativity
while conveying the identity of our houses.
That’s quite a challenge! The members of
the Comité Colbert are looking for first-rate
had a chance to compare the work done at
your school and at another international
school. That will be another feather in
your cap as you build your future.” After
congratulating the students, Margareth
Henriquez, Chairperson of Champagne Krug,
expressed enthusiasm at the results of this
exciting experiment. She advised students
to remember that excellence is of paramount
importance in the luxury business. “Don’t
An artisan from Van Cleef
about the crafts
Le 31 janvier, le musée des Arts décoratifs
à Paris résonnait d’un bruissement de
ruche. L’exposition « Van Cleef & Arpels,
maquettiste, joaillier, sertisseur, lapidaire,
diamantaire…
significatifs. Les 78 maisons du Comité
Colbert représentent 37 500 emplois
On January 31, things were as busy as a
beehive at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in
Paris. The exhibition entitled “Van Cleef &
Arpels, L’Art de la Haute joaillerie” was the
setting for a special career information day
held by the Comité Colbert and the Paris
school board. About twenty middle-school
classes were given a tour by a museum guide
and an artisan from Van Cleef & Arpels. The
craftsmen brought their tools,
a professional eye and their passion for their
work with them, and told the young people
all about life in the studio. The students got
a chance to hear what it’s really like to work
in the jewellery crafts as a designer, modelmaker,
jeweller, stone-setter, gem-cutter
or diamond-cutter. Teachers and students
from the École Boulle were also on hand to
answer questions about how to get training
in a jewellery-making craft, an encounter
that generated a lot of give-and-take.
It illustrated, once again, the importance
of informing students of school-leaving age
about careers in the luxury crafts. As we
all know, the hand crafts do not receive the
consideration they deserve and people often
know little or nothing about them. That’s why
it’s relatively difficult for luxury houses to
recruit young people: they must not only be
motivated and eager to work to create beauty,
but also willing to meet high standards, make
unique creations and strive for perfection.
The situation is especially paradoxical at
a time when the French luxury sector,
growing fast on international markets as
new markets open up, are in a position to
offer steady work to a substantial number
of qualified personnel. The Comité Colbert
companies employs directly more than
37,500 people in France. With this in mind,
the Comité Colbert is working tirelessly to
give these middle-schoolers exposure to the
“ These encounters
inspire vocations
and open up new
horizons”
arts and crafts used
by its members (130 in
all), which constitute
an intangible heritage
for French luxury
that is beyond price.
The know-how of plumassiers (plume and
feather specialists), ceramists, jewellers,
embroiderers, crystal-makers, silversmiths,
trunk-makers or silver planishers is
meaningful, respected and recognized.
It is vital to make sure that this valuable
knowledge is transmitted to the next
generation, perpetuating the existence of the
luxury crafts. The most experienced artisans,
who are the custodians of time-honoured
gestures, need to train the younger ones. This
legacy of technical expertise is what enables
creativity and innovation to flourish and thus
ensures the future of our sector. For more
than ten years, the Comité Colbert has been
working to build bridges between schools
and businesses to permit students of schoolleaving
age to discover an unsuspected world
of fine craftsmanship. The first
cooperation agreement, concluded
with the Paris school board in
2007, provided a framework for
awareness-raising initiatives
targeting Parisian middle-schoolers
via a career information program. The
luxury houses opened their doors: a thousand
students have visited their studios and talked
to the craftsmen who are the heart and soul
of French luxury. It’s easy to see how these
encounters might inspire vocations or at least
open up new horizons. This year, the Comité
Colbert entered into a new agreement with
the Paris school board that extends
and develops the career information policy
that it views as being crucial. “The Paris
school board’s mission is in the national
interest. By helping to perpetuate luxury
crafts, we help ensure the long-term viability
of this prestigious branch of French industry,”
said François Weil, head of the Paris school
board, at the January 31 signing ceremony
in the reception rooms of the Musée des Arts
Décoratifs. The new agreement extends the
partnership to cover all of the public middle
and high schools in Paris. Students will be
informed about the training alternatives
offered by the Paris school board: a broad
range of highly specialized certificate
programs whose level is very good. For
instance, 87% of students completing the
jewellery training program find jobs. In other
words, the school district governed by the
Paris school board is a good place for luxury
companies to go shopping for fresh talent.

The Comité Colbert was responsible for
convincing the French Ministry of Culture
to make craftsmen eligible for the honorary
title of Maître d’Art or the insignia of
L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. The idea
was to attract attention to rare, precious
hand crafts that are part of France’s coveted
intangible heritage. This year, artisans from
Colbert companies – which see recognition
of crafts as absolutely vital – were honoured
once again. In July 2013, four of immensely
talented craftsmen were decorated as
by the French Minister of Culture and
Communication Aurélie Filippetti. This
decoration is presented to persons that have
distinguished themselves through artistic
or literary creation or helped advance the
cause of French arts and letters in France
and in the world. These remarkable artisans
were recognized for their career, their high
standards and their commitment to their
craft. Although the decoration is presented to
individuals, it also honours the team that they
work with. This year, the glory was shared
by the marvellous teams in place at Plaza
Athénée, Louis Vuitton, Rémy Martin and
Saint-Louis. These awards confirm that the
French luxury sector is a key component of
French culture.
INFLUENCE-
BUILDING
IN EUROPE
d’une alliance (European Cultural and
Creative Industries Alliance) associant
a récemment déclaré : « Mon engagement
It took the Comité Colbert five years of hard
work to get national luxury organizations
to unite and lobby EU institutions together.
It needed to communicate a clear message,
namely, that our high-end industry offers
a business model that drives growth,
employment and competitiveness in Europe.
The Comité Colbert invested a great deal
of time and effort to make its voice heard
and advanced on all fronts: it created a
new category of Colbert membership (the
European member) to build representation
for the luxury industry in Europe, and set
up the European Cultural and Creative
Industries Alliance (ECCIA) with its Spanish,
Italian, German and British counterparts, not
to mention encouraging Colbert members to
set up public affairs departments to meet with
EU Commissioners directly.
Among the tangible results obtained, the
Communication submitted by Commissioner
Androulla Vassiliou and adopted by the
European Commission in September 2012
referred to the luxury sector as a cultural
and creative industry. In a recent declaration,
Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the
European Commission responsible for
Industry and Entrepreneurship said: “The
reason for my commitment to the luxury
industry is to promote employment in Europe”
Regular contact is maintained with Vice-
President Tajani. Last November, he met with
members of the Comité Colbert to discuss
what kind of action can be taken to make the
European luxury sector more competitive and
strengthen its world leadership.
The results of a survey of European public
opinion conducted by TNS-SOFRES for
ECCIA and published last May confirm
that the groundwork has been laid. 77%
of all respondents said they had a positive
perception of the luxury industry, citing its
role in business development: 76% said it can
create jobs.
FRANCE AND
GERMANY WORK
HAND IN HAND
A main thrust of Colbert policy is to see
that EU institutions and public opinion
recognize the specificities of the luxury sector
and its potential for growth in Europe.
This year, the Comité Colbert reached out to
Germany to mark the 50th anniversary of the
Treaty of Friendship, giving its influencebuilding
strategy a whole new dimension.
Our association began cultivating ties with
Germany in 2012, when it admitted Leica and
Montblanc as European members
of the Comité Colbert. The recent founding
of the Meisterkreis, a national organization
representing German luxury, offers more
concrete possibilities for coordinated action.
The first Colbert-Meisterkreis encounter
took place on June 26 and 27 in Berlin where,
in a symbolic gesture, the Comité Colbert
held its General Assembly. For the first time,
70 chairmen of Colbert and Meisterkreis
companies sat down together to plan joint
projects together. One calls for running an
anti-counterfeiting campaign in France and
Germany like the one organized by the Comité
Colbert with French Customs. Both partners
are concerned about the transmission
of knowledge to young people and training
them to meet high luxury standards.
As a result, an exchange program will be
set up for apprentices from Colbert and
Meisterkreis companies. An international
design workshop for students from the
UDK in Berlin and ENSAAMA (Paris) is
also envisaged. “The Meisterkreis and the
Comité Colbert share the same values”,
observed Clemens Pflanz, Managing
Director of the Meisterkreis. “We advocate
a culture of excellence in the European
industry, which has considerable potential
to grow and generate jobs. Seven out of
ten luxury products sold worldwide come
from Europe. We need to act in concert to
consolidate and strengthen our advantage”.
Together, the Comité Colbert and the
Ensemble, le Comité Colbert et le
Meisterkreis ont réussi à mobiliser les
plus hautes autorités allemandes, avec
des rendez-vous à la clé. Celles-ci se sont
montrées particulièrement réceptives au
discours des industries du luxe françaises
et allemandes, oeuvrant de concert, pour
le développement du secteur, source
d’emploi et de croissance. « L’intégration
la globalisation. Sans coopération
avoir d’intégration européenne »,
a rappelé Michael Georg Link,
“French and
German luxury
are teaming up
to develop their
industry”
Meisterkreis succeeded
in mobilizing highranking
German
officials, who met with
them and welcomed
the news that French
and German luxury are teaming up to
develop their industry, a source of jobs and
growth. “European integration must be
our response to globalization. And without
Franco-German cooperation, there can be
no European integration”, stated Michael
Georg Link, Minister of State at the Federal
Foreign Office and the Commissioner
for Franco-German Cooperation.
Many challenges lie ahead. It will be
important to advocate excellence as the
way forward for our industry and for
employment in Europe; to help create
platforms for cooperation between the
luxury business, schools and institutions of
higher learning; and to help build influence
for European luxury in the world.
On June 26, a dinner for both organizations
was given by the French ambassador
to Germany, Maurice Gourdault-
Montagne, in the presence of
Ursula von der Leyen, Federal
Minister for Labour and Social
Affairs, who remarked that “this is
the kind of ‘meeting of the minds’ that keep
the spirit of the 1963 Treaty of Friendship
alive. Only by cultivating this spirit can
we hope to meet today’s challenges”.
The Franco-German delegation of luxury
chairmen was also received at the Reichstag
by Norbert Lammert, President of the
Bundestag, and Ronald Pofalla, Chief
of Staff at the German Chancellery.
Further to such a strong mobilization of
high-ranking German officials, the Comité
This year’s assignment for network,
from Colbert houses, bore on the
relationship between the luxury
industry and the internet. 37
people from 22 houses attended
brainstorming sessions and
developed six online initiatives
that were judged by members
of our Economic Commission.
The most innovative was added to
the e-matinée@Colbert program.
This project is a “Luxury Challenge”
platform offering an entertaining
virtual meeting place for luxury
aficionados. The project uses
a game format to measure what
players know about raw materials
mobilize a community of online
experts to raise anti-counterfeiting
awareness and to protect know-how
and creations.
l’expérience in vivo de certaines maisons
ou institutions membres du Comité
Colbert.
French luxury, well
ahead on digital
matters, has devoted a
session to this subject
strategic to the future
Once luxury houses decided to go digital,
they took the internet by storm. In step with
this revolution, the Comité Colbert and its
Economic Commission invited their members
to a morning session on e-communication
held October 10 at the École du Louvre.
A large audience was on hand to hear outside
experts update our knowledge and Colbert
members share feedback based on their
experience. One presentation dealt with the
digital enriched tour of the gardens at the
Château of Versailles, another with how
Lacoste puts the new technologies to work
for creative online users. Representatives
from Longchamp, Chanel, Lanvin and
Guerlain reported on digital operations
at their houses. Towards the end of the
morning, the audience was asked to
help analyze Pernod Ricard’s Chatter, a
Facebook-like network used by a company
with a workforce of 18,000. Professor
Thierry Baccino spoke about the changes in
cognitive psychology induced by using the
internet. The philosopher and sociologist
Pierre-Antoine Chardel chose to explore
an equally fascinating topic: ethics and the
social media. He was eloquent in identifying
the dysfunctions generated by technical
communication systems that are in total
contradiction with the slow pace of human
interaction. “Having to constantly be
available for others means that one can’t
be there for oneself. In contrast, a meaningful
creative action requires a moment during
which the creator is completely centred”,
argued Pierre-Antoine Chardel. Bringing
this broad review to a conclusion,
Marie-France Zumofen, deputy director
at the Gobelins – renowned school for image–
discussed the new occupations emerging in
connection with the all-digital revolution.
Afterwards, participants said they were
impressed with the density of the theoretical
and practical information conveyed.
and bronze – leather goods – gold
and precious jewellery – perfume
– wine & spirits. All very involved
in the creation process, they are
constantly renewing French culture.
AN INDUSTRY OF
STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE
—
French luxury houses generated 31
billion euros in sales, 84% of it on
international markets. They employ
directly and indirectly 131,000
people in France.
A LARGE NETWORK
TO DEVELOP
A COLLECTIVE APPROACH
—
At the Comité Colbert, strategy is
formulated by nine working commissions
conducting the exchanges within
expert networks, with more than
1200 members. The strategy is then
amended and approved by the Board
of the Comité Colbert and finally put
to the vote by the General Assembly.
REPRESENT, ANTICIPATE,
PROMOTE AND INFLUENCE
—
Represent. As an advocate of the
only French industry having chosen
to formulate strategy collectively to
complement individual brands identity,
the Comité Colbert serves as a
standard-bearer for French style and
undertakes to uphold its core values.
Anticipate. Seeking to create the
conditions most favourable to the
growth of the entire sector as well as
individual brands, the Comité Colbert
provides a forum for reflection,
forward planning and exchange,
constituting the think tank for
French luxury.
Promote. To promote its members
globally, the Comité Colbert
stresses the cultural aspect of
French luxury. On all five continents,
it plans events illustrating the close
ties between luxury and culture.
Influence. The Comité Colbert
represents an industry that is a major
driver of economic growth and
employment. It is a preferred interlocutor
for public authorities in France,
Europe and the world.
AN ORGANIZATION
ON THE MOVE
—
Since 2011, the Comité Colbert opened
up to luxury houses from other
European countries as part of its
effort to make the voice of the luxury
sector heard by EU governing bodies.
secteur.
Le luxe français est le seul secteur
industriel qui a choisi de se doter
d’un porte-parole et d’une stratégie
collective, complémentaire
de l’identité propre à chaque maison.
Partant du seul principe qu’à
plusieurs, on est plus fort. C’est
aussi s’assurer d’une meilleure
représentation et d’une communication
plus efficace.
La richesse de la réflexion au
sein du Comité Colbert tient à la
diversité des 78 maisons du luxe
en présence, qui sont de tailles
diverses, porteuses d’une histoire
ancienne ou récente, et détentrices
de savoir-faire spécifiques.
Lieu d’échanges de bonnes pratiques
et de réflexion prospective,
le Comité Colbert fournit
aux acteurs du luxe français, les
outils de leur développement futur.
Il questionne les certitudes et
défriche des territoires nouveaux.
Cette veille active se nourrit principalement
du travail des neuf
commissions qui se partagent
les dossiers (Club, Communication
et Patrimoine, Création,
Éthique et Nouveaux Membres,
Économique, Financière, Internationale
et Culturelle, Métiers
et Ressources Humaines et Pouvoirs
Publics). Ces commissions
s’appuient elles-mêmes sur un
large réseau d’experts qui au
final dote le Comité Colbert d’un
laboratoire d’idées au sens où il
oriente de manière constructive
les esprits, en particulier vers les
questions essentielles de responsabilité
BRAIN TRUST
A forum for chairmen of member
companies, the Comité Colbert is
a laboratory for shaping the longterm
vision of an entire section.
French luxury is the only industrial
sector that has opted to mobilize
behind a spokesman and develop
a collective strategy that complements
the individual identity of
each company. The reason is our
belief that strength lies in numbers.
It also helps us build representation
and communicate more effectively.
The Comité Colbert owes the breadth
and depth of its reflections to the diversity
of its membership: it is composed
of 78 French luxury companies
that differ in their size, longevity and
field of traditional know-how.
By offering a place for the exchange
of best practices as well as forward
planning, the Comité Colbert provides
French luxury businesses with
tools to help them grow. It makes
a point of challenging preconceptions
and blazing new trails, primarily
through the work of nine commissions
(Club, Communication
and Heritage, Crafts and Human
Resources, Creation, Ethics and
New Members, Economic, Finance,
International and Cultural, and Public
Authorities). The commissions
rely in turn on a large network of
experts that qualifies the Comité
Colbert as a “brain trust,” in the
sense that it gets our industry to
think constructively about key issues
of social, societal and environmental
responsibility.
