A word from the President and Executive Director
Dear Members:
Autumn, among other things, brings us
back to school, but for us professionals, it
is also time to select new courses to update
our knowledge.
Surely you know that two strategic directions
of the OHDQ are in effect to: “meet
the growing need for dental care for people
with reduced mobility…” and to: “ensure
that members are adequately equipped to
effectively educate …a diverse clientele in
dental hygiene.”
So it is with enthusiasm and interest that
OPHQ welcomed the consultation report
that the Office des personnes handicapées du Québec (OPHQ) filed
June 2, 2010; the report entitled “Adapter sa pratique professionnelle
à l’égard des personnes handicapées et ses suites” (Adapting
one’s professional practice towards people with disabilities and
its consequences). 1
We want to raise your
awareness to the reality
of disabled people and stir
your interest so you can
gain a better understanding
as to who they are and
adapt your practice to better
serve them.
Within the next two years, we will work
closely with the OPHQ planning various
activities such as publishing articles and
conducting a survey among our members
to determine their training needs and
eventually creating a training program
for these specific groups.
Thus, the publication of the first article
in this issue of L’Explorateur marks the
beginning of this valuable collaboration.
We want to raise your awareness to the
reality of disabled people and stir your
interest so you can gain a better understanding
as to who they are and adapt
your practice to better serve them.
As health professionals, we need to change our practice and in
order to improve our services. n
Before issuing this report the OPHQ consulted with professional
orders to properly identify their practice, ascertain and analyze
elements of competence suitable for persons with disabilities.
Subsequently, a grid of elements of competence has been developed
for each of the professions.
Since the tabling of this report, a few meetings with representatives
of the OPHQ and the OHDQ were held to plan a process
of implementation of their recommendations.
