Network Services (CNS)
The missions of CNS are to:
• maintain the CRP Henri Tudor related network
infrastructure and related services;
• offer competencies in the field of telematics,
networking, and system security in support of
the different Resource Centers and Laboratories.
• LAN/WAN networking technologies
• ATM networking
• ISDN used for data communication
• Network management
• Network operating support for multiple systems
(UNIX, Novell, Windows, MacOS)
• Internet & Intranet technologies (WWW, Email,
FTP, Dial-up, ...)
• System and network security (e.g. UNIX security,
Internet, Firewalls, encryption, ...)
• UNIX, PC & Macintosh system administration.
Telematics
Objectives
New telecommunication techniques, combined
with computer based information processing,
developed into a wide spectrum of new instruments
called Telematics. Telematics is the computer
mediated access to remote archives, databases, or
individuals for (automated) retrieval, exchange and
processing of information. Applications based on
these communication methods are referred to
Telematic Services. These services have become an
integral part of our information society and
developed into completely new application areas.
Telematic Networks
Competencies
Six telematic networks have been put in place to
support the upcoming needs of information
exchange for the requirements of the different CRP
Henri Tudor Resource Centers. These networks are:
BATEL® , CIMTEL®, HANDITEL®, MEDIATEL®, SITEL®,
and SANTEL®.
Telematic Services
Today telematic services and related applications
offered by the Centre’s Telematic Networks are
based on Internet technologies. Best known
example is the World Wide Web (WWW) which
made the Internet itself very popular. This is because
applications are easy to use and much more easy to
develop now. So, both the user and the application
developer can take advantage of this new
technology. Based on this experience the CRP Henri
Tudor has used it from the very first beginning of their
appearance.
CNS offers a common infrastructure, a set of services
and the related competencies to put them in place
and operate them. Preliminary that is addressed to
the Centre’s telematic networks that are on the way
of building-up their own infrastructures. Second
those competencies are offered to companies and
organizations that ask for recommendations, advice
and technical assistance in setting up and using
these information technologies.
The offered services are:
• ISDN dial-up
Analogue dial-up (via SLIP/PPP) to our local
network and the Internet
• Internet services like WWW
(http://www.crpht.lu/), Email and
anonymous FTP (ftp://ftp.crpht.lu/)
• Training.
High speed Networking
support center
New types of multimedia applications accessible
over Wide Area Networks (WAN) are difficult to
implement because of missing high speed network
infrastructures. Furthermore those applications ask
for the integration of different media, such as video,
voice, images and data, based on a common
network transport service. With the availability of
new networking technologies the classic separation
of networks dedicated to telephone, video
conferencing or data transmission is no longer
necessary. An international standard which offers all
